Best way to give away fonts

Archive: 12 posts

I'd like to use prize bubbles but it seems how community objects behave has changed somewhat. Is it better just to make the level copyable or is there some other way?2011-07-08 19:12:00

Oh, that information would be useful for me as well. I'm giving away a typewriter object that prints the font and the font inside prize bubbles. Haven't even tested if it works for people who collect them (no complaints so far, tho, some 5 or 6 people played the level..)2011-07-08 19:22:00

IIRC, as long as the letters are fully editable by you before you capture them, and as long as you don't give the prize bubble a name, they should be individually copyable once the prize is collected.

You can test by picking up the prize bubble with a guest controller, and seeing if it works.

I've tried this but I'm having a problem with the guest not being able to copy or edit the letters. They appear with a dotted line between them when the guest selects or places them from their community objects page.

I captured a bunch of letters I made from scratch, went to a new level, placed a prize bubble, placed the captured set of letters in it but both a guest account and other PSN accounts on my console (I used another controller) don't seem to be able to individually copy the letters.

I didn't edit the name of the captured object or the prize bubble.

As the host I was able to copy and edit the letters but I'm guessing that's because I made them.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

After re-testing, it looks like the ownership rules have changed - again. Seems now that a captured object won't be editable even if you don't name it.

Only workaround I can think of would be to build the font in LBP1, put it into a prize bubble there, put the bubble into a blank level, export the level, and import the level into LBP2.

There is another alternative but it requires slightly more work:

1. instead of giving the font away, give away a block of material with letter shaped holes in it
2. The user can then take the block to their level and paste it onto a block of different material
3. delete the orignial block that contained the holes and the user has a font which is entirely editable because they technically own the lettering

(to get the original font block simply paste your own alphabet onto a different material and delete so the holes remain, complex fonts may require multiple blocks)

I know this is not a perfect solution but think of it like a stencil, instead of giving letters you give them a tool to make the letters

Actually, Dave's idea is pretty good... people should do this from now on.2012-03-30 09:56:00

Woah.. mega bump there!

Unless it is a level thread, no need to resurrect a thread with small talk.

Because this can become an unsustainably complex shape, split it up in a grid of blocks glued together. The hole complexity will be devided among those separate blocks and the player can still use it to create positive letter shapes (though by copying it over his own material and then deleting it).

You can also create your own "blocks" with fonts out there currently "together" and cannot copy just one character. Pounding it into sections of blocks will create the above so you can snag the letters needed.2012-03-30 13:04:00

Mr_Fusion has a font give-a-way where each letter is emitted separately: http://lbp.me/v/4kvzqc
It's a bit more work, but very user friendly.
