Bigger speech bubbles
Archive: 16 posts
The current player accessible speech bubbles are way, way too short if you want to be making long speeches or discuss complex ideas. The current system allows you about 2 lines of text per speech bubble. It's possible to roughly work around this but having a chain of speech bubbles firing in order, but it's very, very difficult to set up and it's possible for the player to change the firing system if they jump. Trying to put several lines of dialogue on one head is just painful. I know it's possible to increase them, MM has larger ones in their levels, especially the minigame type ones where they explain the rules for several lines in the one speech bubble. If they opened up the technology to others, it would really help for people that write story telling or teaching levels. I don't know how it would effect the thermometer, but I would be more than willing to work with a second type of Magic Mouth that taxed it more but allowed more text to be put in. I do realise this could lead to long meaningless rants within LBP, and people could make very long offensive texts, but it's already kind of possible to do that anyway. I can't see why they should limit it if the reason behind it is censorship issues. Don't limit things people would mainly use for good because some people may use it for evil. | 2008-12-14 04:31:00 Author: Elbee23 Posts: 1280 |
Yeah. It's a pain having a good line of dialogue, but not having enough room so you have to move it to another. I mean, should I really have to use five mouths for one simple thing? Great suggestion. P.S. Did you get my PM? | 2008-12-14 04:35:00 Author: Unknown User |
I agree, if we had larger speech bubbles then maybe we could explain the level a bit more. And also, I wish we had that bold red text which MM used in some of their levels... | 2008-12-14 09:03:00 Author: Bear Posts: 2079 |
Yeah this really annoys me too And for those that don't like reading the text. Now you only have to ignore one speech bubble instead of 6 in a row And the coloured text is also a good idea for highlighting things | 2008-12-14 09:16:00 Author: dorien Posts: 2767 |
Well I have great news guys. I found a level that is basically a tutorial for a speech tool called the "Maraz Talking Tool" and you get the speech tool as a prize. It allows for 8 (but no more) speech bubbles to fire in a specific order! I am actually using it extensively in my new level. Unfortunately the servers seem to be down so I cannot check the exact name of the lvl/author but I think it is Maraz. I will post here again once the servers are back up with the precise details. I will be giving credit to this guy when I do my next lvl showcase, this tool is perfectly designed and so useful. EDIT: Servers working. Here are the details: Lvl name: Marazs Talking Tool Creator: Maraz_Matari Hope that helps guys | 2008-12-14 09:30:00 Author: OCK Posts: 1536 |
Thanks for that OCK Might have to have a look at that | 2008-12-14 09:41:00 Author: dorien Posts: 2767 |

If it's big and bulky it might be hard to use, but I'd just have to see it for myself. I was showing my non-gaming house mate my teaching level. His first response was "So much text! Why don't they just say it out?" When I explained to him it would be a bad idea to have player controlled sound due to possible copyright infringment, he replied by asking why don't they just use a software voice reader to speak out all the words. It's not a bad idea, but I like good old fashioned text. I haven't seen talking software technology for a few years, but I know the older stuff use to be quite bad at complex words and expressing emotion. I know that you could make it do some inflection, but compared to what a human can naturally do it was not as good. But maybe it's gotten better over time. Anyway, I should get back on topic. I'll have to check this out. The middle section of my teaching level uses 8 speech bubbles, the end one uses 7. Anything that shrinks the whole thing down in terms of the number of bubbles or the reliability of the order that they appear would really, really help. | 2008-12-14 11:55:00 Author: Elbee23 Posts: 1280 |
Yeah check this out pronto Elbee. I am working on my level as I write this and this tool just works amazingly well. You have to see it for yourself to appreciate the genius of it's construction. Let me know what you think Back to work lol. | 2008-12-14 12:40:00 Author: OCK Posts: 1536 |

I haven't personally tried it, but it looks like a very, very good system for having a controlled conversation. It should make writing the speeches for the "How to" series a whole, whole lot easier. Thanks for the tip, OCK! | 2008-12-15 02:11:00 Author: Elbee23 Posts: 1280 |
Haha, I did the exact same thing in my upcoming stage "Mobile Suit Armorboy." It's a pretty simple procedure really. | 2008-12-15 02:26:00 Author: gevurah22 Posts: 1476 |
Cool, useful post. Great find, OCK! Good job! | 2008-12-15 03:17:00 Author: Unknown User |
Your welcome guys. I hope you find it as useful as I did | 2008-12-15 07:10:00 Author: OCK Posts: 1536 |
I did try using the talking tool in the second "How to" series... It's just that there is a whole lot of dialogue in a very small space. I'll often have 8 describing the room, and another 1-4 talking about what's going on as you interact with it. In such a small area, the tool kept malfunctioning and the words would just disappear as you read them. So I went back to my old method of sticking 8 similiar sized sensor area magic mouths onto a talking point, and then numbering them. I'd then go into play mode and note the dialogue numbers as they appeared as I walked through, and then wrote in the dialogue afterwards to match the order of those numbers. A few play tests later and everything would work most of the time. It's not ideal, as a player might jump through and potentially change the dialogue order, and sometimes it is not quite perfect... But the shear amount of information I need to put into such a small space, I just could not get the tool to work. Just something to keep in mind for the future, and a way to combat it. If it's an interactive scene though you should either have more space and can use a talking tool, or would have less dialogue. Hope this helps. | 2008-12-21 06:38:00 Author: Elbee23 Posts: 1280 |
Its also in my switchboard tutorial/package level Its quite easy, but I do agree. I couldve used at least a few more lines per speaker. | 2009-01-06 21:53:00 Author: Luos_83 Posts: 2136 |
Yeah that would be helpful. Or just use the microphone | 2009-01-07 00:02:00 Author: Arven7 Posts: 11 |
The microphone idea was pulled apart in the past and several problems were found. It takes up way too much space - recorded voice takes up far more memory than text, causing lag and making level load times longer. It can cause offensive material to come through - what's to stop bad language? It's relatively easy to have a computer tell it to look out for censored words, it's much harder with recorded sounds, expecially with background noise/music. Finally, it can breach copyright. What's to stop people taking a piece of music that's copyright, and then putting that through LBP? Even if you limit the length of a voice recording to say 10 or 20 seconds, people could break it up and use things like you see on a music level to make a continuous play back. --- Anyway, I've nearly finished the "How to" on magic mouths. Everything is in place, I'm just trying to iron out the last few bugs. Ironically, some of the magic mouths are mis-firing or cutting out, and it's a big pain trying to work out what the problems are and fixing them. If only they had bigger magic mouth bubbles... wait.. | 2009-01-07 08:58:00 Author: Elbee23 Posts: 1280 |
