What do people prefer?

So, what do you think people prefer. 1. A Platformer level 2. A mini game 3. A level with a story 4. Or, a level with high complexity and detail. Thanks! | 2011-07-05 02:48:00 Author: StaticLinuxpro Posts: 482 |
I prefer anything that is very well made, with plenty of polish. As long as all of a levels aspects are well balanced, I think just about any genre can be awesome. | 2011-07-05 02:58:00 Author: smasher Posts: 641 |
Good point. I was just wondering. Before I spend a lot of time on a level, and it turns out to be a level that most people hate. | 2011-07-05 03:00:00 Author: StaticLinuxpro Posts: 482 |
You would have been better to have a Vote set As for me, I've played good and bad examples of all of those types of levels. Make a "good" one and I'm sure it'll do fine | 2011-07-05 03:49:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
I seriously don't know how, but in this, I kind of prefer an actual reply, not just a number. | 2011-07-05 03:51:00 Author: StaticLinuxpro Posts: 482 |
Something that is very important to all games is 'fun'. That's why bomb survivals did well. It was fun...at first. They're not really all that bad, they're just unpopular now since they are typically put together with little work and are very repetitive. If you were to make one that was intuitive, innovative, appealing, ect, it would do well despite all the typical hate. What I'm trying to say is as long as the level is produced well, and it's fun (that last part is VITAL), you will likely succeed (get more than a couple hundred plays). As for your options...why not include all of them . You can have a story for a platformer, using some logic and nice visuals to make it innovative, while adding in optional minigames along the way. It may be difficult to produce, but would be what "I" prefer, variety and fun. | 2011-07-05 04:41:00 Author: SSTAGG1 Posts: 1136 |

OK! Great advice guys, that is some really good info right there! | 2011-07-05 13:41:00 Author: StaticLinuxpro Posts: 482 |

Yeah I agree with this, common sense really. The only thing I don't really care for is story, not sure, maybe its just a personal thing. Every now and then I can enjoy a couple giggles about some silly character someone made or something, but when it comes to these levels with fleshed out cut-scenes and 3 minutes of dialogue I just really don't care. I'm not going to get into a story within a level that I'm only spending 10 minutes playing. | 2011-07-05 22:19:00 Author: Krondelo Posts: 136 |
I like 1 combined with 4. | 2011-07-14 14:32:00 Author: L1N3R1D3R Posts: 13447 |
Variety is the spice of life I'll play anything that isn't crappy. I do very much enjoy an originally presented story with the right kind of exposition. | 2011-07-14 15:59:00 Author: SnipySev Posts: 2452 |
I like platformers, no doubt... but I hate playing levels with no story. I want to know WHY I'm in a cave with all kinds of shiny technology, WHY! So I guess somewhere inbetween platforming and story is my favorite. | 2011-07-14 16:31:00 Author: LBNinja Posts: 204 |

I prefer platformers and high-detail levels. While minigames are not bad and I have played some fun ones, I'm just not really interested in them. I've got tons of minigames on my laptop and DS, and I normally only play them while I'm waiting for something else, like if I'm in the doctor's office or waiting to pick up my mom at the train station. When I'm on the PS3, I'd rather play something a little bigger. I like high-detail levels because they are very inspiring to me. I want to get to that level of skill at some point, and I like playing the levels to see how the creator used materials and decorations in ways I may not have thought of. I want to see if I can think outside the box in a similar manner to the way they did and add some beauty to my levels. I'm not concerned about story all that much. I just want to play and enjoy myself without having to slog through a ton of text and unskippable cutscenes. Story can break game flow. I love gliding from one obstacle to the next. Being forced to stop is a buzzkill. (This is also why I don't like tons of movie cameras telling me every single stinking step I need to take and lingering on a shot of a stairwell for 10+ seconds, but I digress.) For me, the setting is story enough. An epic story can be nice, but it is far from being absolutely necessary to have a good level. | 2011-07-14 17:07:00 Author: Unknown User |

Because you're Batman, that's why Exatcly! Batman has a story! | 2011-07-14 21:54:00 Author: LBNinja Posts: 204 |
In order: 3. I love a good, immersive story. 4. I admire well made environments and ingenious mechanics. 2. I can't say no to a fun little mini game. 1. These can get kinda boring, I'll play one every once in a while. | 2011-07-14 22:56:00 Author: SackBolt Posts: 97 |
I really like mini games. Especially if they have cool extra features like music selection and a tutorial. I would hate to be just dropped straight into the level with no explanation. Also, the good mini games have a theme and all the decorations match that theme without being distracting. Of course it has to be fun. That is always the most important part. I like stuff that is new and creative, but I rather play a level that isn't very original but has lots of polish and is fun than a level that is broken but has new ideas. But still new ideas can be expanded upon and hopefully made fun. I really don't care for story, or being bogged down by too many cut scenes. If you want to have a story I think the level and environment should tell the story. Just make the level fun to play and it will succeed. | 2011-07-15 01:04:00 Author: CardboardBoxMan Posts: 60 |
