Mr Fugu's Sushi Emporium

A search for a poor missing kitty leads sackboy to a mysterious (and slightly unhygenic) Sushi restaurant staffed by a psychotic chef and a kindly janitor

.....from there a fantasy realm of adventure awaits.

An explorative rpg adventure style level, loosley based on an anime style story.

PLAY TIP: Grab the catfish by its top fin.

All feedback appreciated and reciprocated

Very strange!

Now I see here that you've based it on an Anime style story, it makes a bit more sense. The overall structure of the level I felt was like a cinematic, very little gameplay aside from the two RPG elements (the fish and flowers) and what other gameplay was there seemed like a way to join each small cut scene / plot point.

The visuals were amazing, excellent sticker usage and the psychedelic area on top of the fish was beautiful, if not totally random and trippy. Ha.

I don't know what else to say! I'm not too sure I 'get it' really, while very much different to anything else I've played, it's just very bizarre. I Yayed it all the same, while it may not be my cup of tea, I can see the amount of effort put into it and like I say the visuals were brilliant. Nice use of the 3D glitch too.

Speaking of glitches, I think I came across one... near the end where the bouquet of flowers are, there seems to be an invisible obstruction to the right of it, is that supposed to be there?

As F4F could you please play my level The Water Temple: http://lbp.me/v/1m6fp5

Thanks for the play and feedback...hope you've recovered from the Trippy section lol.
The level centres around an explorative narrative like a semi-interactive anime story. Exploration will pay dividends yet no overly demanding gameplay sections (played enough of those entered in the no floor contest....so here's a relaxing alternative).
Some other scoring Tips: Try eating the Sushi in the restaurant, make sure you grab the ribbon, try grabbing the chicken (a rpg adventure staple since early zelda), look for the hidden mouse on the fishing pier, his cousins may also lead you to hidden bubble runs...
The trippy section is triggered in the sushi restaurant by grabbing the cat fishs top fin.... a reference to the japanese practice of eating FUGU a poisonous blow fish which can induce visions with its toxins and often proves fatal if they are not removed.
That glitch of the invisble matter has been baffling me for a while, tried to resolve it but can't , but at least it doesn't prevent completion of the level.
Looking forward to playing your level and feeding back soon, thans once again.

Hello Mr Root,

Just played your level today.... I have a few observations.

Firstly, the intro of the music track is very nice, with the harps. But then that synth sound comes in and ruins it a bit IMO. So maybe instead of that synth sound, you could replace it with the piano sound? I think that would sound much nicer.

I like the overall look of the level, with the 3D backgrounds and what not. The characters are amusing and I like the humour. The bit with the fish caught me completely off guard, but it was well done.

Even though the look was nice, it did seem a bit bare at times. A lot of the time was spent walking from left to right with little to actually do.

Overall, a good level. Congratulation. I hope it gets plenty of plays, and I should look forward to the next part.

One final thing, if you could be so kind to play my "You Sunk My Sackleship" level (third one down in my sig), with an online friend and leave some feedback, it would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the play and feedback Ali.
The music at the start and end was a sequenced track made by roflwaffle that can be found here alongside many other great tunes:
https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=56614-Enigmatic-Music-Pack

The thermo is full to bursting so I can't add any more detail and I didn't want it to have that generic MM story saturated decoration type look, everything is really based on the old japanese rpg type games where you have to explore a little to discover little secrets , tips for which can be found in post #4.

I'll grab a buddy and check out your level soon.

I had a feeling that the thermo might be quite large, with all the sackbots and the 3D backgrounds.

I don't really have any knowledge of JRPGs. In fact, knowing that "Japanese RPG" can be shortened to "JRPG" is about the extent of my knowledge

One virtue of this level is that it's very unique. Quite unlike anything I've played before. I liked the style and especially found Mr. Fugu (or whatever the cook's called) very well done. The biggest issue with this level are actually the broken, invisible surface parts. I know they're a pain, but there is a way to remove them. In Create mode, you need to draw your popit selection all the way around the entire invisible structure. It doesn't matter what other things you select, because if you do manage to capture the whole thing, only the invisible structure will be selected without anything else. After that you can just hold the triangle button and poof, it's gone.

However, there is one but attached to this method. If you make the selection box around the invisible thing too big, you're selecting anything but the glitched surface within your selection box. Finding them can be hard and selecting them can be even harder, but leaving them in your level can give it a sloppy kind of feel when other people play it. Nobody likes playing a broken level, of course.

One more thing: When is part 2 coming out? Part1 felt a bit unfinished and I can't wait to play the sequel. Good job.

Also, feel free to play and feedback my level: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=59483-Tubular-Bells-Mike-Oldfield-%28Exorcist-theme%29

Thanks for the feedback dude, I'm pleased you found it unique as that is something I always aim for when creating.
Thanks for the tip on removing those glitched invisble obstructions, they seem to only appear when the cat paw prints above that area disappear so maybe they are some sort of residue.
The Sushi kitchen area is my favourite part too, the characters as in the film Wizard of Oz assume a different role in the fantasy section, where the farm hands became the lion, scarecrow and tinman...the janitor becomes the mysterious helper, the old drunk becomes the fisherman and the cook, Mr Fugu.. will have an alternate role too.
I look forward to playing your level, always loved the track.

Hi, these are my thoughts about your level:

Pros:
- The visuals and 3D glitch effects.
- The story about cats with an oriental touch.

Cons:
- Too easy, there is only one flat way...
- It's the first part of a story (don't like multi-part levels, but that's my opinion)

Please leave me feedback at my level https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=56955-Math-Millionaire-Quiz

Thanks for the feedback dude. Glad you enjoyed the visuals, effects, theme and story.
The horizontal direction and easy gameplay is intentional to reflect the original genre source material, it's meant to be an easy going accessible little tale not an extreme hardcore frustration inducing platformer.
Totally agree with you in that I'm no fan of multi part levels.....my pet hate is being kidnapped through a level link!!! That's why I didn't add one and elected to bust the thermo by cramming in as much as possible rather than spacing out the story at a more leisurely pace.

Well I had a lot of fun playing this level ? you were so right when you said it would make a pleasant change from bruisingly difficult platformers. Your levels always have something genuinely original about them and this one is no exception. It's the kind of level where you just have to kick back and go with the flow. And doing just that, I loved interacting with all your quirky characters. The chef was a hoot -I?m so glad MM gave us those grumpy eyes ? and the fisherman was fun too in a slightly surreal way. I didn't spot he was a reincarnation of one of the figures from the first half of the level. That's a nice touch.

I did some exploring which meant I found your mouse (proof in avatar to the right!). As you can see he was somewhat alarmed at being discovered ? and rightly so as it turned out, poor thing! I also grabbed the chickens but was too craven to pester them beyond their second warning to stop so I?m curious to know what would have happened if I had persisted. With all of these things going on ? not to mention the psychedelic fish ride and following the paw prints ? I never had a chance to get bored.

I don't know anything about Japanese RPGs or anime but I enjoyed the whimsical environments of the dream section of the level. I thought the village made of Da Vinci turrets was particularly charming ? nice use of the 3 D glitch.

All in all the level was a breath of fresh air! Thank you!

Thanks for taking time out of your busy judging schedule to check this out Shropshirelass, I'm glad it provided a bit of light relief.
I think you're one of the few players to discover the hidden mouse ( later in the level he'll lead you to a hidden bubble run). I've just started planning a sequel but hope once again to bring a little originality if I can. I like to add a dream like quality if I can, after all is not LBP supposed to be made up of peoples dreams and imaginings...a style sadly neglected by the generic clone level creators. Thanks once again for playing and feeding back, always good to hear the opinions of a much respected player.

Heyas Mr Enoch (by the by, that's from Cryptonomicon, no?),

Gave this a whirl yesterday (and really...it's perhaps not best suited for hangovers, but what the hey?), and i liked it...a bit guardedly, but i liked it.

You've got a lot of charm packed in here, and it plays to its inspirations well. Right down to periodic head-scratching "Man What?" moments (which in this setting, mind, are par for the course, so this is no complaint). The character designs are nice, and the little details were pretty keen. It tickled me enough to give it a " " so that's success of a kind.

On the other hand...the level kind of boils down to a lot of walking from scene to scene (which, considering my stage, is maybe not something i should point out). i don't know if you could fit some jumping or something in there, but...

A second point, and this may be just me, but, the extra-layer glitch sometimes highlights how little is going on in the stage. Like, it pulls things back so much, and lets you see all the places you're not going. It's particularly noticeable in the cat village section, all those towers and waterwheels look nice, but they're way over there, what's for me to do right here ? Mind you, this maybe just me, so you can take it or leave it.

All in all, definitely more fun than not. It's got atmosphere, charm, i really want to save little Sophie...looking forward to good things in the next part!

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you take a look at my "Bloomin' Oni-Ons!" stage and leave a spot of feedback over here: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=59257-Bloomin-Oni-Ons! ? i'd really appreciate it.

Good day and great creating!

played it last night...was interesting. i liked the use of the 3d throughout. the only thing i didnt like was that when your transported to that bridge and the title shows up...it stays on for a bit too long and if you walk back it shows up again. i don't how you set that up but if the cams on a sequencer, hook up a one-shot timer to it so it only plays once. other than that...was different and good. maybe some more detail but i can imagine your thermo must of been exhausted lol2011-07-15 09:33:00

Thanks for the feedback waffleking, glad you enjoyed the quirky charm of the level. I did consider different level structure options including making a multipart story adventure kicking off with an intro movie level, but I'm not a fan of having to play them myself. So I went for an explorative scene setting level with cut scenes by way of an intro which will be folllowed by a platform combat level to wrap things up. It might have benefitted from a top down zelda type interface rather than the scenic 3d work but I haven't even atttempted that style of creating yet. I have a rough outline for the story conclusion but as anyone knows who has played my darker levels there's no guarantees of a happy ending.

We'll definitely have to keep an eye open for the conclusion (and play through some of your other levels).

i've been on a kind of spree playing levels from the board here, and random levels following people's hearted creator's lists, building up the juice for my next stage (it takes me a bloody long time to get started, and to finish, for that matter), so i haven't had the chance to play through everyone's back catalogue yet. But i will...i will...

This level looks cool, I've got it queued up. I can definitely appreciate a bit of exploration and/or nostalgia (as you'll notice in my level) so I'm excited to check this out.

First off, I loved the humor of the level. It was the perfect blend of cheesy, zany RPG cliches. (Although I will say, I thought I was going to be attacked by an army of chickens for beating up on their friend). The city design was awesome! I liked looking down the alleyways and seeing more buildings behind.

Constructive criticism:
-The one thing I would like to see in the sequel is more non-linear exploration. Possibly using more of the vertical space (building roofs, etc.), instead of just left to right.

Fun, quirky level Enoch. Well done!

My #1 favorite level that involves sushi and cats. XD A nice level about searching for a cat in a sushi restaurant with an unusual twist. Really liked the landscape with the music as well. Can't wait what comes out in part 2!

I am going to repeat what other have said when it comes to all the walking, there is, well... A lot of it, and when it comes to Little Big Planet, I like jumping around, over, under stuff, ect. I agree in saying that its very plausible for you to put in some obstacles in the middle of all the walking to make the level more exciting!

Overall, I thought that this level was good. It was exceptionally creative. The use of the background glitch was amazing! You made the stock background, look better than the stock background... Visually it was stunning. Only problem i had was some of the transitions felt choppy or, for lack of a better word, weird. As a player, if the level runs awkwardly, then we feel awkward. Its basic communication. You are trying to convey a certain idea to us and using Little Big Planet to encode and send your messages so that we can receive and decode your messages. But if its not encoded correctly, then we decode the wrong message thus miscommunication occurs and it comes across as us feeling uncomfortable. Try and make the transitions smoother and overall flow better.

I can't wait for any further updates on this level or upcoming levels, and the second part of this one! Hope I helped!

Unlike anything I have seen before. The details were amazing, the storyline was creative, and the level flowed nicely! There's not much to complain besides mostly naviganting through a flat surface, but that's not much to complain about. Overall I really enjoyed this level! Great job!2011-09-19 04:50:00

Very interesting level. Some of the things I thought were interesting were the fully 3D scenery, the misty paw prints, and how the story progressed with the characters giving you clues to the next step to take. The one part I had a little trouble with was one of the bridges. I could get up next to it, but it took a few tries to get back on the layer where it crossed the water.

I did find a secret, I think it was a small rabbit. Took a picture with it.
