Happy Fourth of July!

Archive: 55 posts

http://21stcenturywaves.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/liberty.jpg

I just wanted to say happy Fourth of July to everybody!
So what are you doing today? Are you going on vacation, staying at home and just blowing crap up with firecrackers, ect.

But don't forget what The fourth of July is all about and that freedom doesn’t come free.

I live out in the country where everyone's house is so hidden behind trees that they are not afraid of launching fireworks the entire time they are for sale.
Can't sleep, sky full of boom-booms.

Fireworks are too expensive. Here, we celebrate our independence by doing nothing all day, as an homage of how we aren't going to do nothing for anyone that tries to colonize us and steal our primary goods.

Either that or we're lazy.

I was watching ITV news this evening and they kept repeating about how England has better success rates than America in treating childrens cancers. It took me half an hour to catch onto the fact that the reason they kept repeating this every few seconds was because they were trying to disguise the fact that the US pwned the UK about 200-300 years ago. It failed dramatically.

I'm guessing it's on Sky. Darn it. :'(

The Spanish, French, Dutch and Native Americans had nothing to do with it

(Not to mention that America was just one colony out of many that Britain had to try and maintain)

While our history books do make the U.S. sound like the main character of a cheesy action movie.
Americans don't seem to care and sometimes don't even know why they celebrate holidays.
People generally just seem to think in terms of what they are supposed to buy.

Don't worry, criticizing America today is totally needed. It's not like we get people telling us how horrible of a country we are everyday. Go ahead and ruin everybody's fun even on a holiday, we deserve it.

You know, they are actually really patriotic (most of them) so celebrate it too by setting off fireworks and flying the flag with pride just like everybody else.

They will be from the families that were "reprogrammed" by forcing them to ditch their ancestral heritage, stop speaking their language and giving up their customs. "Kill the Indian, Save the Man" as the saying went.

Don't misunderstand me... it was Colonisation from the Imperial European powers that was the biggest culprit in this.
But it seems as if America wants to eat it's cake and have it too.

America wouldn't have got started as a colony were it not for "colonisation" by European settlers. But they seem to have the idea that living in America was their idea... and so villianise any foreign influence.

I mean, we critisise China for "occupation" of Tibet - but there are enough 'naturalised' Han chinese (Han Chinese who were born in Tibet) there now to legitimise a Chinese governance.
Much the same way as European colonisation was legitimised in America by exterminating the native population.

Any one who is "proud" of their own nation, clearly doesn't know enough about history. Human history in general is nothing to be proud of.
Which is why Jingoistic TubThumping irks me so.

Yes that use to be the way they used to handle things but now the government is doing everything possible to keep the Native American culture.

Well actually they didn?t try to ?exterminate? the Indians, if you read up on your history you?ll see that they actually just moved them around a lot and tried to take their land, they didn?t try to kill them or anything (usually anyways)

I'm not like the Nationalist grinch. I hope you all had a wonderful day

It's just that when I was a kid, we used to play "Cowboys and Indians" (a variation of "Cops & Robbers" or "Soldiers" - basically just running around making shooty noises). I would always want to be the Cowboy, everyone did. They were the good guys - The John Waynes, The Lone Rangers, The Clint Eastwoods etc Protecting the helpless farmsteads against the savages (The Indians). Also, cowboys had a gun and the indians had a bow & arrow - so of course the Cowboy would always win.

Now that I'm (alot) older - my thinking has completely reversed. The Indians were the good guys.

I enjoyed myself last night. My family and about 30 other people were at my aunt's beach house and we did many things together. Riding jet skis, BBQ'ing, playing music, and basically having a good time. So many fireworks went off all around the bay; I think there were 12 different displays going off at one point. Waving a flag high, holding my little cousin's hand, taking in the cool summer night air... it was a good 4th of July.

And, I'm sorry to mention this, but I don't think that bashing someone else's country is really on-topic.

That did happen but it was more of an accident than anything, they were given used blankets from a hospital in Tennessee ware a smallpox outbreak had happened awhile back the blankets were thought to be disinfect.
The story does vary from source to source though.

You think setting up an over-seas colony is cheap?
We had to make the money back somehow

And yeah, we're SO oppressive - those Canadians and Australians love it though

I've also read some revisionist history that basically suggested that had George Washington been offered an officers commision into the British Army and a seat in Parliament, as he so desperately wanted, then the entire war of independance might have been averted.

An interesting thought.

You do realise that the only reason America speaks english, and not french, spanish or dutch.. is because of The British Empire, right?

And actually the Colonies 'were' a massive burden. Alot of them were won through conquest by over-zealous generals - when Parliament was busy trying to secure what we already had... these pesky generals kept 'claiming' more countries as part of the British Empire. It was an administrative nightmare.

Also, the British Empire 'was' a civilising influence on the rest of the world. Just look at the architecture left behind in ex-British colonies.

You're Welcome

Meanwhile in CA we can't deviate from the cookie cutter D: Also, I would really like for fireworks to be legalized XD outlawing them just forces people to find more "creative" ways of making explosions, that are not nearly as entertaining and way more dangerous. Who do you think those original colonists were? They were British emigrants- who brought with them their civilisation and culture.

And remember that it was the British Empire that were speaking out first about the plight of Native Americans under the oppresive rule of the newly founded independant America... and Britain was accepting escaped slaves, who again, escaped from the oppressive American regime, as Britian was the first to speak out against slavery.

Don't think that history is black and white.... with America as "The Good Guys" and the British as "The Bad Guys". it's all a muddy shade of grey.

I just love that word.

They were legalized in California at one point... but then I think those NorCal people got tired of us SoCal people getting all of our fireworks south of the border so they had them (teehee) outlawed. That, and I think some plane was hit by one or something.

Oh, and I'm just saying, I'm not really affected by you Brit's being butt-hurt about the holiday. I mean, I could understand how you'd be offended by having SUCH an inferior colony beat you guys out with some assistance from the other countries you've angered and dominated over the past centuries and in turn inspire other revolutions throughout other colonies in the world. But that's just me.

Yes, because the moment we gained independence, all those civilized ex-British colonists were shot with the independoray which turned them in to filthy terrible Americans and all of a sudden things like slavery and expansion were suddenly inhuman. Oh my, something must be done about it now that it isn't supporting your economy! No, we offered escaped slaves a refuge - and treated them as "equals"... Imagine that eh? treating people as equals - I'm sure I've read that somewhere

History is written by the winners - which is why your history books are full of American glorification - while completely glossing over, or making excuses for, all of the atrocities.

If you are going to focus only on the good - then it's my job, as devils advocate, to emphasise the bad

Im sure you have actually gone through a real typical American history class and know exactly what you are talking about. Ill have you know that while the rest of the world shoves histories dirty laundry in our faces, so does our own history classes. You don't really think this is the first time I've ever heard of the "atrocities committed by the American people" it really sickens me considering so many other countries have done so much worse and most will just sweep it under the rug and continually bring up incidents from hundreds of years ago, back when these activities weren't all too uncommon. Oh and don't get me started on equality in England.

No, you didnt.

You've never read one of our history books so you dont know what you are talking about.
In the history books I was exposed to in school, there wasnt much pro america propaganda, and at the part where the American Revolution was concerned it was the basic story "Oh the British are coming, to Arms! We're outnumbered and outgunned! The Native Americans taught us Geurilla Warfare! The British dont know how to counter it, we're free!" but of course theres propaganda in there in other places, just like your history books probably say you were proccupied with your other territories and your Empire being spread out across the world or some other nonsense.

History is written by the victors, but you still had control of 1/3 the world, losing America probably only made you bat your eyes and go torture someone else while writing in YOUR history books how uneducated and brutish Americans are.

You really think the most biased country since ancient times wouldnt put lies in their history books to support their imperical state and promote obedience? Pro-tip: Im not talking about the U.S.

When you say devils advocate you really mean it, you're promoting the worst oppressive empire in history. Except maybe the nazi's, but im sure the British Empire comes in at a close second to Hitler, if not ahead. Instead of focusing on the flaws written in another countries books because you have some sense of pride and entitlement, focus on your countries flaws, like that ego.

Being Pro-Guy Fawkes and Pro-British Empire makes you a hipocrite, that should be obvious. -_-

As you can probably guess the slavery part was a lot better known, so that?s why people usually think it started over slavery.
