Epic Boss Inspiraton Thread

Archive: 8 posts

OK, title sais it all. If you have any Ideas that don't fit into you'r level or that you don't mind sharing, post 'em. Ill start, I was thinking something like....
A giant triangle, split into three parts; the top half, and the bottom half split down the middle. Two pistons connect each of the two bottom parts to the top one, and each piston is at the same angle as the sides are. So the pistons expand and push the top part upwards (might need alignment).
The area beneath the triangle is electrified dissolve, and the area on the bottom of the the lower parts of the triangle is Glass.
When you kill the boss, the dissolve... dissolves!
Add in a bunch of elecrified hazards, tricks, traps, emitters.... decorations.
What do you guys think?

What more inspiration do you need other than to look at the boss on the collector,
Its got everything, magnetic keys, bloing up parts, flailing parts,

I thought itd be cool to have a dinosaur type one though, you know classic godzilla style with its arms on fir that you had to avoid?

What I was aiming for was a thread where people could go to when they needed help with inspiration for a boss.2008-12-14 19:26:00

Ok...

Im making this up as I go.

Instead of the normal "brain destroying" thing, you have grab switches. Each one needs to be dificult to get to. Each switch lowers an arrow that points to a segmant on a dial showing what comes next. When the arrow completely lowers, it explodes or disappears. Use the cow glitch for pretty disappearing stuff.

Should I just post videos of my bosses from LittleBigPhantasy and The Azure Palace? I could easily tell them how I did it and what mechanisms were involved.2008-12-14 22:01:00

Ah donkey show, you are a well respected author and famous for, amongst other things, the ability to make big, complex and believable bosses. I'm sure people would love to see some of your work well explained.

Let me say this though, I don't think every level needs to have a boss. Take my main level, A journey through a digestive tract. It's just as the name implies, it's just a journey. There are no bosses in my level. The journey itself is the rewarding thing, rather than beating something that's 50 stories high.

If you want to be technically correct, I guess you could say that walking through a giant the size of a level is kind of beating a boss, but well, that's not the point I'm trying to make. You don't kill the person you're going through, you just go in one end and out the other. When I'm playing my own level, I forget I'm even inside someone most of the time.

A boss can make a good conclusion to a good level. But that isn't the only way to end a level. To think that a level has to end with a boss is faulty logic and story telling, in my opinion.

But yeah, back on track...

I like to use story characters in my levels. I've toyed with the idea of making giant evil versions of the characters. They could be evil twins or taken over by some outside force or something, but I think it would be cool to slap around someone who's been helping you out through a level.

I've thought about not having a boss, but without that type of "Showdown" Near the end of my level, It just... wouldnt be the efect I'm looking for.
I can think of a boss idea by myself, but I have some friends that post some.... REALLY nooby levels, and I'm trying to help people like him, incase they can't figure out what they want as a boss in their level.

I'll post my max technique for those of us not goood artisticly. I suck at drawing and such, but I rock at kinetic systems, like legs arms. They just look ugly, so I use this technique.

You need PS eye though.

Take a pic of what you're gonna make. Turn it into sticker.

Make a huge wall of super thin cardboard on back plane. Stick the sticker on it the size of your boss.

Then use corner editor tool on glass material to make boss.

Then convert it to glass/metal/sponge to make it grabbable/slippery/heavy. Then use cow glitch to make them all into cardboard or polystyrene. And sticker em up.

Gimme a sec and I'll find some pics of epic bosses for you guys to get ideas from.
