Media Molecule apparently 'Stepping away' from LBP

Archive: 65 posts

An IGN article has stated this.

LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule is "stepping away" from their famed franchise for a shot at something new, Executive Producer Siobhan Reddy has stated.

"We're stepping away from Little Big Planet to focus on some new ideas," Reddy told Edge at this year's GameLab conference in Spain. As to whether that means the end of the LittleBigPlanet series or just a short breather for the team, we don't know. We've contacted Media Molecule for comment.

Sackboy is Media Molecule's (admittedly brilliant) sole creation since the developer was formed back in 2006. What will the team think up next?

Not sure what to make of it, very little info!

Check a couple posts down for a comment from Spaff!

I'm a very sad sackperson after reading this on ign: http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/118/1180202p1.html

It's good to see developerss delve into new things but I doubt they'll abandon LBP altogether.

I think they are sick of the game. It's a constant bug-fix for them - because it's so riddled with bugs. It'll be weighing them down like an anchor.

i think they're just trying to cut themselves loose from it.

I hope what-ever they do next keeps the same Play/Create/Share ethos, though.
There aren't enough "creative" games for creative people out there.

What I have to say is that you can't expect creative minds to produce the same stuff over and over again.
I expect LittleBigPlanet 3 always from MediaMolecule, the franchise won't die, but it will just be on the "PS4", when tech will be more advanced and flexible to deliver all the ideas they couldn't put into LBP2.

Whatever they will do next...Good luck, I'm sure it won't disappoint

I think this is good. When they come back to LBP, they can start again, rather than having to work in backwards compatibility along with all the inevitable bugs that come with that.2011-07-01 12:20:00

While I can fully understand that the issues currently troubling LBP2 can be exhausting for a developer, I'm afraid what this will mean for further patching and fixing of our dear LBP2
I'm pretty sure Sony will continue to ensure the release content in the form of paid DLC for at least a full year, but the issues currently plagueing the game might be shifted down the priority ladder even further, perhaps so far as to never being properly fixed...

With that said, I cannot wait to see what exiting new projects Mm will bring us in the future

Well I don't think Mm will easily abandon LittleBigPlanet, as it's community is still very much active. I'm thinking, if that article is true, that Mm is probably just taking a little breather to work on something else and clear their LBP filled minds a bit for new ideas. I don't think they'll be stopping bug support either, otherwise the community will go crazy, form an angry mob, and burn down Mm's studio out of complete rage.

.......Okay, that probably wouldn't happen, but once support for the games stops, the community will inevitably destroy itself. I still expect LittleBigPlanet to be active for quite a while longer, especially with the Move pack on the horizen, and I can't even predict what Mm is planning on doing next.

I love LBP, but I'd love to see some other play/create/share type games. I think it would be cool to be able to jump between a couple of different creative games, with totally different themes, and/or perspectives. 2011-07-01 13:48:00

I don't think LBP will be abandoned altogether, surely they'd leave a small team dedicated to fixing bugs and what not. Right? Doubt we'll see any real updates after the move comes out though. I almost feel abandoned. I can understand them wanting to create other things and branch out but don't bite the hand that feeds you. If they just walked away altogether it would be disastrous, so no, I think they'll still keep a few guys dedicated to LBP. I'll stop rambling now, can't seem to keep a coherent thought.2011-07-01 14:22:00

What I don't get about this is that LBP is bread and butter for MM who are a small british developer. Remember that in LBP they have a franchise that can sustain them for years with constant DLC updates and level packs.

Small British developers have a bad track record of abandoning succesful and popular formats.

Rare stopped making Donkey Kong and instead made Grabbed by the Ghoulies.

Free Radical stopped making Timesplitters and instead made Haze

Rockstar Leeds stopped making GTA3 handheld spinoffs and instead made GTA Chinatown Wars

Many creators like myself will feel let down by this news as I know there is so much more that can be done with the game. Having said that I can't see myself not buying the next MM game and I'm curious as to what they might have up their sleeves.

I'm sure whatever new game they're making will be completely amazing ^^!

At the same time though, I really, really, really hope they don't completely abandon LBP. I've always admired how much MM supported the community...

Microsoft bought them and understandably didn't want to pay for a game to be produced for a rival system.

I feel like this is going to end like all of my favorite series have so far: the company abandons the fun, imaginative game to make a more serious, boring(IMO) game with human characters, and then they never go back to the first series ever again, or it is put on the back burner indefinitely. Happened to Sly (though I heard a fourth is coming out, so that's good.), Jak, and Ratchet.

The newer, more realistic games that come out from such companies are normally very good, it's just that they are never my cup of tea so I can't really show my love for that company anymore. (I hate gritty games that take themselves too seriously. They aren't inherently bad, they're just not my thing.) It would be a miracle if Mm were any different with where this is headed, because Insomniac, Naughty Dog, and Sucker Punch all said the exact same thing before they pretty much stopped their other games. :/

TL;DR: Prepare for LBP to fall by the wayside for a new, non-create related/more serious toned game.

Hi guys!

I just wanted to write a comment on this before anyone panics

Yes - we at Mm are currently in the process of thinking of new ideas and new crazy things we want to make for you to play, in order to do that, we need to take a step back from LittleBigPlanet. But we are not vanishing from your lives and nor is LBP - I'll get some more detail on that for you shortly, but for now DON'T PANIC!

I saw this news too, it saddened me. I loved LBP since I first stepped into my pod, in the first minutes of my PS3's life. Though the time I'd spend hours and hours continuously playing it has long passed, there's no week where I don't spend some time without checking the new levels, looking for hidden gems here in LBPC and messing aroung in Create.
LBP is probably the most creative game ever, and if the next generation of consoles don't have anything sharing the same premise as LBP then I just don't want to move onto it. I'd still be happy if MM started a new IP with the same charisma, originality and the "Play, Create, Share" motto, but nothing marked more my experience as gamer as LBP did. It'll be a hard farewell.

That would be a Minecraft with controllinators, power-ups and advanced logic circuits.

Was slightly concerned but after reading Spaff's comment it seems like little big planet will not be ignored which in my opinion is great... as long as there is some form of support for our favorite game I think its great that Mm wants to expand into new dreams... I think they can make a 3D create game that isn't LBP Related, atleast not directly. I mean, can you imagine sackboy running around in 3d. It could get pretty wierd.

Besides, I think we're close enough to 3D with the Camera Glitch and 3D Materials. However, I still want an LBP 3!

I became so nervous by this news. I'm glad to see Spaff's comment though. I'm perfectly acceptable with Mm trying new things. I've actually wondered what else Mm would do besides LBP. However, I hope they don't just abandon the series. IMO, the franchise is still relatively young and with every new tool, tweak, feature that Mm presents, the community desires something new. Even if their team is thinking of new ideas, I also trust that they'll still support LBP with add-ons and updates at the same time. So good luck Mm with whatever your next project might be. I'll be looking forward to see what you have in store. 2011-07-01 17:27:00

I completely understand and i wounder wat esle Mm can make but LittleBigPlanet is my favorite games ever, i don't wants the features,series,etc.. to stop. I'm afraid that they start working on a really hard project that they don't have any more time for LittleBigPlanet and the game will crash. Again. When PS4 comes out, there better be a LBP for it.
I don't care who makes it, long as it get's made.
No other Game lets me make games in a easy, fun, and cute way Like LBP does.

Whatever this new project of theirs is....
it won't be another play/create/Share game like some people are hoping MM will be making.
meaning I won't be interested in whatever it is they make if it's not. Last thing I care to play
is another Fighting game or FPS or whatever all them game creators like to make these days I don't like.

But hopefully They don't stop Updating/Patching LBP2 because of this new project...

If Mm can make another game as revolutionary as LBP, and one that inspires the same intense passion among it's fanbase, then all the best to them. I look forward to seeing what they come up with.

It would be nice to see some bug fixes before they take a hiatus though. Some minor bugs can easily be worked around, but issues like the messed up local cam settings and level links causing players to diverge urgently need to be addressed.

They didn't stop making it, they just tried something different while working on TS4. Unfortuanetly, Haze did bad and lead them to their demise, until they were saved by Crytek. They released concept art of TS4 ages ago, and there are rumors that TS4 is in the making again

I doubt that they'll drop LBP all together. I think that they'll carry on producing content for LBP2 for another year or so. I reckon that they make an LBP for the PS4 because they'll have a lot more to work with. I just hope that this new project doesn't fall flat.2011-07-02 21:00:00

Its about time MM made the move to make something different than LBP. I'm not sure why you guys are worried, were talking about the company that's first game ever made it on to the back cover of every single PS3 game manual.
I wouldn't be suprised if MM came back with something equal to, if not better than LBP, even if it doesn't contain a cutesy charm to it. I say we support MM! (Keep going guys!)

LBP is such a game that even fixing bugs is hard, as some of those bugs are used for creation, and for backwards compatiblity reasons with already published levels, even a simple bug fix may require quite a bit of testing. So indeed, LBP is a game that is very hard to maintain. I hope they leave a couple of guys to keep up the good work they've done throughout the life-cycle.2011-07-03 00:13:00

Well, could they at least fix basic broken functions before "taking a break"?! I'd like to be able to go through a level link with another player. I can't believe that half a year later they have not fixed so many fundamental issues.

Selling us DLC isn't supporting the community, that's the community supporting them. Fix the game MM.

Yeah, this stuff is making me mad. No fixes, no communication, and half a year later, still nothing. It's getting old. They better have a patch coming soon and it better be massive. And it better do more than reset some scoreboards for scores no one will ever see anyway.

Half a year with no fixes, and to to talk about taking a break... absurd.

Yay, I'm glad they're doing this, rather than being like some people who hang to one thing for fame, they're trying to expand and willing to explore what they can do.

I don't care if the new game/ franchise is nothing like LBP or non-LBP related at all, as a matter of fact I'd prefer it if it wasn't, what's the point of stepping away of something if you're just gonna make things that are the same?

Also I've been wondering what other kind of games they'd be able to make finally able to see what else is Mm able to do is great!
Dunno why people panic or depress so quickly, heck would you rather them be working on LBP3 already?

I for one am glad for this and say good for you Mm!

I think it's good they're going to try other things.

I just hope whatever other games they produce are unique like their past stuff and I hope they continue to incorporate the play, create, share aspect, or something similar. Or since they'll continue with LBP I don't mind if they make games with no play, create, share, since LBP will still be a living franchise for my play, create, share fix, lol.

Hope they come out with another unique masterpiece with fun multiplayer and the longevity of LBP, although that kind of longevity would be impossible without play, create, share.

I'd be interested in seeing a game of whatever type where players can create their own home space which could act as a hub similar to LBP's pod but a full blown space where you can create it, like maybe i want a home with actual rooms, even a yard, it can be who knows what themes and create options. Or maybe that would be an option in a future LBP.

So many possibilities. MM is genius. I'm sure they'll come up with something brilliant. Just as long as they never abandon LBP I am in support of whatever they do. I know that sounds selfish since I'm technically saying I wouldn't support them if they abandoned LBP, but LBP is one of the greatest games in history with an idea so genius it's ahead of its time. To abandon that would be baffling. But of course they aren't luckily, lol.

I be guessing that they might be needing more employers at Mm, more people=faster work.

How they giving up LBP? Just how hardcore they worked on it and bare of people have published 4,500,000+ levels online.

Hopefully they be designing the material texture, objects, clothing and costume, stickers and decorations, And developing new tools, powerups, and gameplay element. Mm only quiting LBP cus they get bare of bug reports and that other monkey n parrots.

Really I would say people that LBP 3 should be release at 2013 I bet...

Really I believe that Media Molecule are going onto to different things 'for now', since overall they have been a game company that says "We make games", but only has 3 games (I refrain from saying LBP PSP is an actual title ) of the same franchise, which technically is only building on top of one single game.

Really I hope this will give them the chance to step back and eventually come back with some ideas, but in the meantime, I believe Mm is trying for a new game that would definitely follow the same style as LBP, but along a different path.

But in my true opinion... Trolls scared them off.

Media Molecule isn't big enough to juggle lbp and something else which provably means they will sell part of lbp to another developer. I don't like it when series switch developers its like reading a fan-fiction it is never as good because nobody is better than who made it. I have seen many good series go in bad directions after a developer switch.[Spyro the Dragon after insomniac stopped making them] I would hate to see an original and fantastic idea die because of a new developer. I never preorder the firs game from any devoleper and lbp3 will be no exception2011-07-09 21:01:00
