SA reviews "Sonic's Aid 2.0"

Archive: 5 posts

This time I'm reviewing Sonic's Aid, a level done with practically an identical color scheme as a Sonic level and done quite unsurprisingly by super_sonic5411.

First of all, if I ever run into super_sonic5411, I have 2 things to give him regarding this level:
1) A pat on the shoulder for creating so far the first Sonic level that actually looks and plays like a Sonic level should, what with jumping on badnicks and defeating the nefarious Dr. Robotnik at the end.
2) A kick in the balls, mostly for the horrible music selection that doesn't at all sound like anything relative to a Sonic level, and makes the experience so much harder to stomach.
Honestly, changing the music around would make this level feel infinitely better; Sonic levels are known for having incredibly energetic tunes that keep you pumped up for action, but the selection of "Song 2" followed by "Tapha Niang" does not create even the smallest spark of energy as they are slower, more pasionate songs. I would pick something a bit more upbeat like say "Cornman" or "Atlas", heck maybe even "Tricky Business". I suppose "Volver a Comenzar" works as well, but not quite so much.

The level starts off with a steep ramp uphill, which is guarded by an electric crab (probably to mimic the first Sonic's crabs) and you may notice that killing this thing from the up slant is ****ing impossible due to not being able to jump high enough, so you have to lure it down which takes forever and hit it from the back. I know it's only been the first 2 feet of actual level, but it's just kind of annoying throwing something that bad at the very beginning. You go a bit further and find a Chaos Emerald that is obviously made out of cardboard since the creator didn't even bother to color the bloody thing (heck, even the ruby gem sticker would've been perfect). You use the emerald to get through all of 2 doors and then have to abandon it, which seems kind of silly but oh well. Next you cross some bridges that are placed behind a layer of blue electric glass apprently used to simulate a waterfall, which I have to admit is well done in theory but might have been better had the waterfall been non-electric. After fighting through tons of crabs and a couple bees, you arrive at a massive clearing that requires grabbing Miles to cross, but before I hit that I want to say something about the multiplayer area:

Although I played by myself, I saw what you did for the section where one person pushes buttons to activate emitter platforms while the other person jumps across. The only problem I have with it is that the crazy emitter strategy doesn't work, you would hit the platform for a split second and then fall through either way, making this section impossible. Please do something to fix this section, platforms on winches might be a better idea.

Anyway, moving on you cross the ravine onto the next platform which is totally barren for some reason and are informed that the next area is full of "super crabs". Well basically they are just reskins of the crabs earlier on, but now they shoot high velocity proximity bombs EVERYWHERE, which means you should expect a lot of ******** deaths. After a while you come across Robotnik who threatens you with his "emitter tank" which consists of a super crab riding a tank with 3 weak points, plus the one on the crab on top makes 4. The crab will be shooting bombs everywhere while the tank lays down big proximity mines on the first layer, and spawns red crabs on the back layer, so the boss is easily defeated by running up the middle.

So the question you may have is "Is the level worth playing?", and my answer is maybe. Right now, the experience and fulfillment are somewhat paltry in comparison to what it could be, but maybe with a few subtle changes like the music and maybe less BS kills at the super crabs plus a fixed multiplayer area would make this a fairly enjoyable level, but even then it can't be the ultimate quality we all remember from the Genesis classic which really isn't just this level but every LittleBigSonic level, and that's just the sad truth of the matter.

Final Score:
6.0 / 10
The inappropriate music, badly placed enemies, and general normality of the stage prevent it from being great per say, but it still looks and plays more like a Sonic level than any runner-ups I've seen thus far. If there was some more variety to it and better considered music, I'd say the highest it could reach is 7.5 / 10.

On a side note, I guess the constant proximity bomb deaths probably happened to me because I didn't collect any rings.

Hmm. I didn't experience any problems at the 2 player part, and I did it by myself.

It's worth mentioning that this was his very first level, and since the night he published it, he hasn't touched it since. The reason why it's called 2.0 is because he added my Sonic Balloon prize that I gave him.

Oh, well in that case there's a whole different kind of problem with it.

Huh. Well I'll see if I can get one of my buddies drunk enough to play the level with me and re-elaborate.2008-12-12 23:28:00
