Dust 514

I mean, it's just another Unreal 3 Engine FPS - but the way it links up with EVE Online sounds amazing.

The Next FPS worth getting excited about? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dust_514)

At the Sony Press Conference, it was confirmed that Dust 514 is to be released exclusively on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
The game features users fighting ground battles in wars on planets in the Eve Online universe.
The events that happen in this game will affect the EVE Online universe. Battles in this game can also determine who controls various planets in the EVE universe, and users in DUST 514 can interact with users from the EVE universe such as providing mercenary assistance during on planet battles.
During matches there will be a commander who will have an RTS-style perspective.
CCP has hinted that eventually the games will exist in one world and integrate seamlessly, allowing everything from the basic cross game interaction to calling in strikes from orbiting ships

I saw the gameplay at E3. It looked still very early footage. I need to see more imo before I get excited. Games have promised so much before, but then delivered so little2011-06-30 14:35:00

I only ever played the 30 days free on EVE Online - and I was totally blown away by the sheer size of the in-game universe and the vast amount of career options you could pick.
Plus, Elite (the inspiration for EVE online) was the first Computer Game I ever played - and is still one of my favourites.
If it weren't for the monthly Subscription charge to play - I would probably still be playing it.

The thought of having your own private army of soldiers - or of fighting in a private army of soldiers - is immensely appealing. Especially as EVE's Universe is a story tailored by the users themselves - they wrote the in-game history of EVE just by playing it.
I remember reading about a real-world court case brought about by the Hostile Take-over of one of the virtual Corperations that operate within EVE.

One thing I'm not sure of is wether Dust will have it's own monthly sub - which would be a deal-breaker for me (unless it's the bees-knees).

Yeah, I don't pay subscriptions, which is one of the reasons I don't play 360. I think that if you buy a game, you should be able to continue playing, without being charged monthly2011-06-30 15:04:00

Eve sounds amazing, albeit totally not for me... However, with the whole controversy now, I'm kinda rooting for the makers of Eve to go don the gutter :/ Plus it IS just anouth gray shooter no matter how you pull it... Eh. And I was so excited when I heard the Sony guy talk about an MMO developer during E3 /sigh2011-06-30 15:05:00

I'm the kind of guy that can see past superficial things like graphics - so long as there is some interesting game mechanics at play behind them.

I just like the sound of a PC player, engaged in an economic war with a rival Corporation - employing console gamers to wage a ground war on their behalf.

With all of the elements at play in EVE online - such as politics, economics, war-fare etc - there would 'have' to be more to Dust 514 than just another generic FPS clone.

Some of the gameplay vids I saw were pretty awesome.
They infiltrated a base - and took out the generator - which in turn took down the security turrets and opened security gates... and they proceeded to take over the base. Once the base was taken over, they upgraded the defenses and were eventually launching missile attacks on the orbiting ships.

It actually seems more like BattleField 2142 (no bad thing) - but with a persistent online universe running in the background.

It's going to be awesome!

Don't you mean 2142? 2011-06-30 22:28:00

If anyone is incredibly interested in this game, I suggest looking at the Dust 514 unofficial forum (http://www.dust514.org/). Several MAG players have gone there to discuss the game, as well as many EVE players.

There is so much potential in a game like this. I just hope CCP get's it right, and learns from the mistakes in MAG.
