Matte Painting First Attempt

Archive: 23 posts

A first attempt at matte painting. The design is for an album I am designing for commission and this is a concept.
The water is just a rough representation of the type of water I plan on putting in the painting.

This is pretty amazing.
I like the theme.
Just my opinion but I think I would add a touch of weak blur to soften/blend edges.
With brush tool rather than filling the entire thing of course.
That is if your not already planning something to that effect or better since your still working on it.

Thanks! Yup this is essentially a frankenstein at the moment. I'll be blending everything together and colour correcting the image as a whole when I am finished with putting everything in there

Yup! Currently I'm studying Digital Design at university/college and since it's my holiday right now I decided to do some freelancing to earn a bit of extra money and to develop my skills further

Thanks!
But I had better clear something up.
This stage of the matte painting consisted of photomanipulation so about 60-70% of the detail is actually photos.
Though I did have to tinker with those a lot. First I needed to distort, cut them into pieces and arrange them. Then I had to make them all look like they fit together tone and material wise.

The first image you posted I liked since it was balanced but in the subsequent images the perspective of the island in the middle seems off, it's almost as-if it's titled up towards the viewer and looks awkward. Don't **** it up just because I wrote some words on the internet though.

Is there a reason you choose to place the industrialised city to the right and the natural cliffs to the left? I get that they're counterpoised.

Nice work, I'm interested to see how this progresses.

Thanks for pointing that out to me I was sure there was something wrong but couldn't quite put my finger on it.
The entire composition is the client's choice s there's no reason I did that other than the fact that it was requested by him.

I think the picture looks very passable already but I think I'll make a few suggestions anyways.

Hmm I think that it may look even better if the water texture was less intense.
Maybe just where it connects with the shore to the left.
The rocks look like the bottom of them aren't far enough under water IMO.

If its not too much trouble I think messing with the position of the island slightly could possible make a difference.
If it needs to be in the middle for the sake of the theme I think it could still be good to make it farther away.
I think it takes too much attention away from the other parts of the picture.

Looks great, some things look off to me though. The rocks on the lower left of the island for instance. They have much more contrast than the cliffs on the left, perhaps make them match the cliffs more lighting and fog wise (LBP making me say fog.. I'm sure there's a more technical term ). Foliage on the island looks similar too. Also maybe add some shadows/ reflections on the water of the island, well the rocks anyway. Maybe you just haven't got to that yet though. The metal looking thing on the cliff could also do with some shading and have some shadows on the cliff.

I agree the water looks odd. The view doesn't seem very far but I get the vibe we're looking into the far distance.

Here the ocean idk, loses detail over distance. Lighting makes it kinda hard to see though.. But the time of day does seem kind of similar, maybe your ocean needs more yellow in it, the colour does look off compared to the rest of the image. maybe some more foamy stuff on the beach too at the edge of the water.

Also you say it's for an album. Musical? The dimensions seem a little odd for a CD, the first concept looked more correct dimensions wise if that's the case.

Thanks so much for all the help guys!! It makes it a lot easier to know what I need to fix up when I get to the final stages of the painting

The design is for two music album covers, hence the funny size. Essentially the client wants one side to be dark and city like, with the other more natural. I havent done much on the left side yet xD

I guess since it will be half on each side the position of the Island would be fine.
Since it will be to the side.

I think you may have to use yellow text if they want the song list on there rather than on the inside.
