Topiary Tower Tragedy

Archive: 27 posts

I've spent a lot of time tweaking and adjusting for the past few months, and I think I've finally finished my first LBP2 level. There's a bit of a grab bag of platforming elements within the level containing

- Lots of grappling hook action
- Epic grabinator sequences
- Sackbots/Enemies
- Crazy Awesome Cinematics!! (but they're really just average)

Sorry for double post, didn't want to just edit post as thread wouldn't get bumped.

Well not long after i dropped into the level i was admiring the lighting & atmosphere, which i always look for in levels, and the items and decorations are used very well. It all perfectly suited the unique theme you have created,i loved the little garden looking parts, oh and that sackbot running on the wheel made me laugh lol. I found it very entertaining and i never got bored even at some parts when i was not sure what to do. Oh and the story is cool too. Just afew things i noticed :

There is a part where you can see the default floor, i really hate seeing that as it breaks the levels theme and illusion, but i was quickly drawn back into the level, maybe put a cam there to look up?

The area left of the first tower with the switch at the top looked abit empty, i think a little decor there or some structures would just make it look alot better.

I liked the boss fight and its phases, plant boss fights ftw! But maybe make the jelly balls destroy when they hit the bulb? Or maybe they do, i noticed on my boss fight they dont always destroy themselves when i want them too. (the "poop" i mean)

When you teleport after killing the vine boss, use a controllinator teleport instead of gas, just because say if someone was trying to ace it would be a little annoying getting that far and dying.

overall i think it's a great level and very fun to play

I'll definitely make those changes, though I'm running out of thermo... As for the jelly, how did you do it? Just impact sensors I'm assuming? Also I was considering making it a deathless teleport after the boss, but I wanted it to be multiplayer friendly and it seemed kinda overly complex with the amount of thermo I had left . But thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it.2011-06-27 23:36:00

ok you wanted feedback.
At the part with the bounce pad turning in circle, there was deadly gas on back of it and some time when we try to get on the bounce pad instead we get killed by the gas.( i didn't finish lvl, i stoped there because i couldn't do it, gas keep killing me )
Also that part was really hard and wasn't really well made.
Repetitive stuff, could have added more structure,design,decoration,etc... And average made me click ''boo''.
If you make some change i could try it again and rate ''yay''.

Yeah put an impact switch on the jelly connecting to a destroyer, and make sure it activates by an impact with a keyed object. Then just put the key on the bulb. And about the rotating platform part, just put a thin layer of plasmafied hologram (brightness set to 0 and sound off) on the same layer of the circle the platforms are bolted to. it will stop players going beyond the plasma. Hope this helps2011-06-28 05:47:00

Just played it. Visually, this is a very unique level (well, as far as I've seen in LBP2). It's got an obvious Eve's Asylum inspiration, but there is enough that's different about it to keep it very unique. I particularly like the color scheme and use of the color correction. While there is nothing particularly original about the gameplay, it is still fun and new in a way. At some of the parts, what I was supposed to do wasn't fully explained, but that is not a complaint on my part. It may be old school, but I kind of enjoy fuddling around trying to figure out what I'm doing. Besides, I never spent more than 30 seconds trying to figure it out (unlike this one temple level I played...). There isn't much to say about the story as it's your basic "Save the _____" with no depth or interesting characters, but the level didn't really need a story, so a lack thereof does not detract from the overall experience.

All in all, good job.

Ok. So I changed the boss jelly to destroy on contact with the boss thanks to gigglecrabs wonderful assistance, and I'm pretty sure I've fixed the part sport dude was having trouble with. The problem was that you were jumping to the middle layer from the back layer which the game doesn't like. I already had poison gas back there do
I tried plasma but it produced similar results so I got rid of that one wheel completely andade it a swinging section.

Also ragtag? Which parts were not so clear? I know you said It wasn't a big deal but some people may not be as tolerant as you are

Really enjoyed this level.
Well considered use of materials and lighting, an engaging plot device to drive the action, lots of variety of variety and challenge. I really liked the colour corrected lighting combined with the chequered material, gave it quite an original look. Some interesting switch puzzles used to destroy the vines and open passage further into the level. The flying winged platforms looked pretty neat especially combined with the bright flourescence of the light cubes and bounce pads, once again adding to the original look. I thought the Boss whilst well made (looking slightly like a plant from mario world or that old ps2 platformer Klonoa2) could have taken less hits to destroy.
Overall an original themed well thought out level worth a smile, good job!

I've just played your level and I think that is a good one C: I love atmosphere and decorations, only 2 things:

1) in the part of flyer trmpolines (sorry for my bad english ^^&apos, where you use grabinator for reach the upside, the checkpoint is not attached to background, so saboys
may fall down.
2) in the part of little green sackbot with (the little monster) the switcher is not easy to find.

I hope that can help you to improve this great job ^^

Thanks for the feedback guys

@Enoch - I think that for now I'm going to leave it the way it is. I actually find the boss quite easy.

@Bryoshe - I'll make sure to fix those problems. and your English is just fine.

Also a quick update for everyone else a good friend of mine pointed out that there was actually no topiary in the level. So after I slapped him, I added some at the end to make it more authentic.

Just played your level. It's so fun with all the jumpers! And the decorations are also very cool. A lot of work for your first LBP2 level.
The only annoying thing is that if you touch jellies from behind, there's a fog that kills you :/ But I guess that's part of the level's difficulty.

Please leave me feedback at my level https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=56955-Math-Millionaire-Quiz

I love this level. The Art Style and the Graphics are very unique, and also cool to watch. The level design is solid and very fun to play (heck, you could make a survival challenge out of the part where you need to grapple the descending platforms!). Overall, it's a great level. Both Visuals and Gameplay are fun.
Some minor nitpicks:
1) A cutscene for the Knight's Tale would be cool.
2) The Boss is too easy, his plasma balls are too slow and easy to dodge, and also they disappear too soon. Make them faster.

Thanks you guys I appreciate the feedback.

@Flamedragon- I've had somebody else say a cutscene explaining the plot would make the level cool. I'll see what I can muster up with my one bar of thermo left , and I thought the plasma balls were a little slow too. But a friend said they were perfect so I kept them. I'll change them too.

@ara_que (that's latin. right?)- the jelly is supposed to be gassy, it's part if the difficulty. I'll check out your level soon.

Played this just now. Overall, a fun level. I enjoyed the (apparently added) topiary nod at the end. The speech was quite slow, I often cancelled out of the bubbles then sat there staring at a white knight with a triangle over his head as he apparently gathered his thoughts for the next sentence. I couldn't see the switch with the thorns by the algae monster, then I was confused by the green jelly pile covering the green switch, were those for anything or just covering the switch? I tried throwing them at the vine, then at the algae monster but they didn't have any effect, then once I pulled the switch I tried to bring one with me but they apparently don't travel. The boss fight was good, if a little slow (the plasma, the time between attacks) and I was confused as to why I kept dying by noxious gas. It appeared that maybe the sword had some near it, and I think some of the jellies did, but I couldn't tell which ones so I mostly just died a lot, yet still found myself waiting around a lot during the fight. Really did enjoy the level though, very nice job.

Just played your level and i really liked it. It looked great and played well for the most part. The speech took to long at times and i was a bit confused at the end boss. Apart from that its a great and underplayed level2011-07-02 19:04:00

Thanks for the feedback on The Secret Workshop of Master Origami (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=58407-Deliver-me-from-Eve-The-Secret-Workshop-of-Master-Origami)

I really liked your level. Original title. The visuals are very good, nice combinations of materials, decorations and lighting. It has a very nice fairytale vibe, which I like. I also like how different sections of the tower have a distinctive different feel to them.
The gameplay is balanced and varied. Entertaining platforming mixed with some light puzzling.
Nice little story, with clear objectives tied into it. I could have used some more diversity in the white knight sackbots.

All in all: good job. Yayed and hearted.

@slimedriel- Honestly I have the same problem with the cutscene as you do. Do you have any remedy for that? Or are you stumped as well? I wanted voices as well as subtitles and lip-syncing (but apparently that's not possible, or something). I've made those two lever sections more clear because have a feeling alot of people are having a bit of trouble with them as well. As for the boss, I've gotten a lot of similar comments in regards to confusion and slowness of the plasma, so I've fixed it up along with a. There was no gas on the sword, its just decoration, but I moved it for practicality's sake. I really appreciate all the great feedback.

@Arsenal_fan- You pretty much had the same comments as everyone else . So thank you for playing and giving feedback.

@pickled-punk- I'm glad you enjoyed the level. I'm gonna try and get those White Knights some new animations for you

Hello there,

I have the chance to play your level yesterday and it was really good. I particulary enjoyed the visuals and atmoshpere you gave to the level. I do not have a lot of complaints, it's enjoyable, there's variety in the gameplay.

The only things I can mention was that it took me some time to see that the plant in the back layer is actually a switch when you meet the weird monster covered by algae, and I think a controlinator teleport would be better than the "death teleport" after he boss fight, but overall the level was great, with a strong visual theme, so I rate it .

thanks !

I had posted this to LittleBigLand but i figure you check here more.

I got a chance to play your level. It has pretty unique visuals throughout. More than anything it reminds me of a fantasy world based on Chess. It had some nice gameplay elements as well. There a few spots where I think you would have benifited by using a circle with a center bolt for grappling and swinging. I liked the idea of the bounce platforms with wings, but i disliked them being that harsh white light (personal preference). Speaking of the flying bouncepads...the tall room with these being constantly emitted stops when you get to the top. I jumped down and couldn't get back up without popping.

I would have added more gags with your sackbots, I loved the one running on the wheel, but all the rest weren't doing much. Also really liked your white stickered objects for scenery, looked really nice.
