SA reviews "H.A.T.E." (old review)

Archive: 5 posts

This is an old review I did, but I felt that this level deserves to be further showcased to a degree. Anyway, here's my old review of "H.A.T.E." by the incredibly talented Voltaire.

So, from the most obvious standpoint, it's a tribute/ripoff/testament to Portal, one of the greatest First Person Puzzle games ever made, and since Portal had some incredibly ingenious puzzles that fully took advantage of what could be done in the game, it would only be fitting that a (good) tribute to the game would adequately feature this function.

To put it simply, Voltaire could not have possibly done better, which coming from me (the super cynic) is a shock. Honestly, I can't think of anything bad I want to say about this level, it is that ****ing good. Yeah, the puzzles later on get to be as hard to bite into as leftover gristle, but it's challenging and fun and keeps you coming back even after failing once or twice, and that's the way puzzle platformers are meant to be, challenging not frustrating.

I haven't had this much fun with puzzle platforming since I played Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (PS1) and because that's the best platforming game (series) ever made in my eyes (other than LBP at this point), any level that can give me that level of enjoyment is a winner by all means.

So, here stands H.A.T.E., Portal couldn't be more proud of it's long lost twin brother.

Final Score:
10 / 10
Absolutely sublime from start to finish, and currently the only level other than maybe The Azure Palace that has tickled my "Klonoa" bone once again. Voltaire, I salute you good sir.

EXTRA: This review was waaaay before I got a spot here, so it's not nearly as indepth as my more recent reviews. Just letting you guys know.

How am I going to top this? lol

I get the feeling I will be haunted by H.A.T.E.. Every other level I make will not be quite as good.

I think one of my favorite critics, Yahtzee, once said something about this:

"If you are going to make something brilliant, make sure it's the last thing you do before you die or retire, because otherwise everything you create from that point on is judged by overwhelming expectations."

I like to call it "M. Night Shamalayan" complex, because just about everything after Signs has just been one mediocre or bad movie after another, but it's mostly bad because everyone looks at it and says "Hey, this isn't nearly as good as The Sixth Sense".

My advice for you is not to force yourself to madly outperform the last level, but make the next level because it's something you want. Do it for you.

I don't know if I'll ever top my first level either. I just published my second one, and even after I polish it up, I don't think it will be nearly as good.

By the way, H.A.T.E. was awesome, I can't wait for your next one, I'm sure it will blow my mind.

Lol I don't have that problem so much, my 4th level blows my others out of the water. And besides, i'm sure you'll manage.
