Judging the "Quality" of levels.

Archive: 8 posts

I hate when people use "Hearts" and "Likes" as a way of judging a levels quality. People do silly things to get plays and hearts, like begging and advertising. In the end do these things really matter. Levels are made so people can enjoy them, not to get plays. I remember someone saying my work sucked because it didn't have many plays or hearts.

I mean if we judge levels by likes and hearts, Then bomb survival levels ,Kill justin Beiber levels, etc are the best examples of what the community can do because people like and heart them the most.

Judge levels on actual quality, not hearts and plays. Don't go around begging for hearts and plays.

Sadly, this is exactly accurate of the community in general. Look at the population of society and figure out how many people are creative. Now apply that to our little community. That's a pretty bad ratio, and one that is directly and blanatantly reflected on un-Cool Pages. It's sad, but it's true.

There's an old cliche that goes "The masses are stupid". Cliches are cliches because they are true. It's the intelligent ones who don't play those levels, ask for hearts, or beg for plays. We all want plays and for our work to be appreciated, but it's how we go about getting that attention that sets us apart from the crowd.

I agree that you shouldn't judge a level just by the number of plays or hearts. though i don't understand the advertising being silly comment.

It really surprises me when people spend weeks on their creation, then publish it and then walk away and act surprised when there are'nt many plays. i feel that you need to work just as hard to get people to play your level as you did creating it which can only be done by advertising. take the feedback for feedback forum for example.
remember people can't enjoy your level if noone knows about it.

PLAY MY LEVEL... the links are in my sig.

Begging isn't cool, but advertising (intelligently and non spammy) seems to be a very valid thing to do. LBP is BIG (it's also little). This means there is a lot of noise and it's only heard by a few people. Any creative venture needs advertising, otherwise people aren't going to see it.

To me advertising also involves playing other peoples levels, leaving relevant feedback and reviews... its almost like you have to have a part time job marketing your product.

Assuming a level is good because it has a lot of plays is obviously wrong, assuming a level is good because of many hearts is also wrong because hearts are always produced from plays.
Assuming a level is good because it has many "yays" or few "boos" is also incorrect because they too, depend on plays.

Thats when ratios come in...

Usually determining the heart/play or yay/boo ratio can reflect a good level.
The more plays the more valuable these ratios are.

You will never find an H4H or justin bieber lvl by searching "highest rated" on lbp because it is based on yay/boo ratio.

You will notice that the highest rated (best yay/boo ratio) levels are always simple, hard to fail lvls. Thats why the highest rated lvls are always movies because they can never fail or glitch and cause someone to boo them.

So the best ratio doesn't necessarily mean the best lvl, however a good ratio almost always reflects a good lvl.

I even get comments on my levels like "This level needs MORE PLAYS!";

And I'm like... then play it more!

Repeated plays from the same person don't count in LBP2

But yeah, it's a poor way of judging the community. Even worse is when the top review is simply something like "AWSOME" or has that dreaded sentance "Like if you agree".
