Shining Aquas review corner - Closed until January

Hello, it's Shining Aquas.

For those who don't know me:
I am a 21 year old male that loves Platforming games (as well as a couple other genres) and even though I enjoy making extremely tough levels, I also find great pleasure in reviewing other people's works. So basically, if anyone wants me to review their levels, tell me, and I will review it. Make sure to include the link to your level on the showcase, your PSN name and the name of the level, as well as your address....no I kidding.

One thing to keep in mind is while I always promise an in-depth review, I can't always promise a sugarcoated review, which is to say I'm not going to go out of my way to be nice about levels that I feel need some harsh criticism to improve. Also, I view all levels objectively, I don't carry any particular expectations and will judge all levels on an equal playing ground.

Right now there are only 2 rules:
1 - Only one submission per person right now. Most of the flooding was cause by people asking me to do 2 levels at a time.
2 - From here on out (12/23), I will only have 1 level on the queue per author. (1/10) Just in case anyone wasn't clear about this: only 1 level per author on the list at a time, but once your level is done, feel free to submit another.

I'll offer suggestions when I feel they are available, and will always score a level based on an "out of 10" system. (1/6) At this point, I will also be marking all reviewed levels with a smilie on the left side of it, which is based on the score.
10 = Blue, Sunglasses
9.5-8.5 = Green, Big Smile
8.0-6.5 = Yellow, Smile
6.0-4.0 = Green, Arrow pointing right (supposed to signify midline level)
3.5-1.5 = Purple, Frown
1.0-0.0 = Red, Angry Frown

EDIT:Also, I should point out that the reviews I give are not limited to what's requested, there are a couple of levels I won't get requests for, but may review anyway (Like say, The Azure Palace and a few others) just because I want to.

Yo Aqua, thanks for the review on my last level "Good or Evil- A Knight's Tale". Now I need another favor

A Knight's Tale: The Wrath of Bantuk

This is a continuation of the "good" side of the Knight's Tale saga. However, my heart to play ratio is right down the crapper with this level. I think 40 people have played it so far, yet only 2 have succeeded in beating it. I've made it WAY easier than what it started at, but it still seems people can't beat it. Ugh, rip it apart and tell me what you think I should do to improve it, because as a creator I find it way tough to gauge whats wrong and what needs tweaking, without any constructive feedback from anyone. I think you can edit the title of this topic to add a statement saying requests are closed. If you can't, you could probably PM a mod to ask them to change it.

If you get really bored, you could make a list of all your reviews on the front post like what I've done. It takes a bit of fiddling to get all the links though, but it's easier once a system is set up.

If your really, really bored you could then sort the list, so people can see what levels you do or don't recommend, however you want to put it.		2008-12-13 03:51:00

Just a short tip which I just mentioned on Neverynnal's sticky post...

If you go to the very first post in this thread and edit it, you can see the title information filled out, which is how the title appears on the thread list.

You can edit this to whatever you want, like "taking requests" or "no vacancies, come back later" or however you want to put it.

This should help for those that read the title and maybe the first post, but then don't read through the whole thread and think that they can or cannot post new requests for reviews.

Well, the reviews get a decent amount of reads. After all, the reviews never get 'out of date', so they'll always be garnering new clicks and new readers. Also, the same person seldom reads the same review twice, so it won't get multiple views from the same user as easily as 'normal' threads.

I would be nice though if the reviews would be in a separate area outside the forum, much like the Arcade and Gallery. The Reviews section should have sorting by score, name, author, level type etc, so that players could easily search for level reviews of the type and quality of levels they want. I'd expect vBulletin to have a module available that would work well for such a section.

Thanks! I'm glad that it didn't get repetitive, since my aim was to make as long a level as I could while still retaining interest. And believe it or not, there was still some space left over. There was actually another section I had planned to include and left space for, but it got to the point where I was thinking "OK... this is ridiculous. I need to stop adding stuff to this level!" I basically wanted to get as much out of that tempermental thermometer as I could, and employed every tactic I could to use up as little as I could manage. Believe it or not... the thermometer is at 75%, so I could have included even more! But I won't. That would be silly!
The story/setting was just an afterthought really... I don't have any 'grand idea' for what any of it meant. I do have plans for a story-driven series of levels, although I won't be starting that until I've finished my current projects! (I did actually spend 30 odd hours making the first in the series, only to realise that I had planned it out all wrong, so I deleted it)

You should really be asking that in the "Help" section of the forums. How you start a new thread is go to the appropriate section, in this case "Help". You should see a bright green button at the top and bottom of the thread which should say "New thread". Click it and make a new thread.

If you have any other questions about the forums, you can ask any of the moderators, distinguished users or administators any questions you have. That's basically anyone with a coloured name, to keep things simple. You can click our name and send a private message or view our public profile and leave a visitor message. We will try and get back to you when we are next online.

1.08 has not been released public yet, well, it was not out 12 hours ago. It's still in development at the moment, and will be released when it's ready to be released. They might have stated a planned date for it, but I would imagine they still haven't got everything quite right and so are holding back until they do.

If it were to be released it would download as the game is starting up, not when you are exiting the game.

UPDATE: It seems the patch came out while I was asleep. A thread was made about it here: Update 1.08 released, it's not Edam (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=8024). This might be a good place to post about not downloading the patch.

The norm for level reviewing is pick one level, review it, critique it, and give it a score (or sometimes not, whatever works for you).

The Special reviews are designed for the purpose of reviewing a set of levels or perhaps not really reviewing levels at all but rather talking about other aspects of the game.

The first special, which was based on the MGS bonus levels, was designed to review the entire pack as a whole (which was about 5 levels and 1 survival challenge). This encompasses the first main use for special reviews.

"The Art of Music Levels" was a review designed to talk about an aspect of LittleBigPlanet, not any levels in particular (though I did share my personal favorites).

Also under this section are the non-frequent "review compilations", where I talk about a set of the last 20 level reviews I've done and perhaps go to the length of rescoring some of them for better or worse.

This latest one I'm working on "Take a Breather" isn't actually entirely about LBP at all, only about half of it is.		2009-01-27 20:03:00

Alright, here's a bit of a fun story:

I actually wrote up about 85-90% of the next review, but before I could send it in, we experienced a temporary power failure. Needless to say, I tried writing it up a second time.

This time, my computer decided it wanted to Blue Screen when I was literally about 4 sentences away from achieved victory.

Anyway, my best suggestion is probably to get rid of the ENTIRE Queue line, and start it over from scratch. Many of those levels are so old that people made newer levels/ the people don't come here anymore.

Okay, I think I should address this before proceeding any further with the reviews.
Many people are asking me to reset the queue list, or get rid of the ones I've got up right now. Given the amount of time I spent on "forced vacation" I can totally understand, but before I receive anymore requests like that I want to make something clear.

The main purpose I have behind reviewing levels is make them known, and to explain the charactistics that make them worthwhile to see for one's self, and to make known the flaws that they carry so that people may go on to improve them. I don't know what happens outside of my reviews, but I do know that some of them have allowed certain author's levels to reach greater levels of popularity and I know other authors have definitely taken my advice for what it's worth.

Now, this doesn't mean I'm completely unsympathetic to everyone here, I do understand that some people don't come here nearly as often. Hell, remember SuperPhillip? He was banned, so his ability to come here is absolutely impossible, yet I'm still considering throwing in a special review for his "SuperPhillip series" because they were actually fairly decent, and remind the community about them. So, here's what I plan to do.

I will keep the queue list as is, but I will on occasion switch the order here and there. Don't worry, I want everybody's levels to be included, and the fact that I have such an enormous list is because that many people actually cared enough to make their levels known, so it would be unfair to ignore them completely.

Sorry for all the delays, thanks for understanding.

Before anybody asks, I'm still here. Barely for now, if only partially.
I have started opening up time to prepare for the soon forthcoming LBP2, set to release in the upcoming months.
Before the game comes out however, I have a rather filled obligation that needs taking care of: the queue list.

For the moment, I am not taking requests. I will not be reviewing anything new until the stack has died down significantly. My objective is to have just about all of my reviews done by the time the second game comes out, and to be much more open to the league of new levels that people create with the second game's toolset.

Here's what I would like to do come January:
-I will still be taking requests for single levels. I would highly prefer things made in LBP2 as opposed to LBP1, but I'll try not to be too picky.
-I will still be taking requests for level strings, or series. Again, would highly prefer LBP2 content on this end over LBP1, especially considering the new level-stringing tools.
-I will open up a new section of reviews for entirely original "games" that people make with the LBP2 engine.

Anyways, I said I'd upload Hobo Warrior today or tomorrow...4 months ago. Christ. Anyways, it's up. I've also written up A Helping Hand...Err, Pop-it, but I won't be able to upload it later today. I'll probably play Metal Gear Karas tonight.

Also, a little note. I have effectively finalized the queue list here. I added two reviews on the end of the list entitled "GRAND REVIEW COMPILATION FINAL, and a farewell to LittleBigPlanet 1" and "SA Special - Embracing the Future". 1) BEST CREATED CONNECT FOUR (2P ONLY), it is very professional made classic game connect-4, the best in LBP.
2) LITTLE BIG PYRAMID: TEMPLE OF TUTANKHAMUN (LONG HARD EPIC LEVEL), this level is very, very long and inc 20 various chapters!!!, there is elements of skill, some bosses and the most original puzzles ever. If you like various gameplay, tricky levels, smart puzzles, some chalenges, long adventures, fun storylines (sackboy talking to you, lots of situation jokes) and you are looking for a something new what you never seen before then you will love this level.
3) LITTLE BIG PYRAMID 2: SECRET OF CLEOPATRA (LONG HARD EPIC LEVEL), read on top, level is the same good as 1st part of pyramid!!!
Coming this year, I hope very soon LITTLE BIG PYRAMID 3: MYSTERIOUS SKULLS (LONG HARD EPIC LEVEL)!!!

As I mentioned a page ago, I've closed the queue list for the rest of the game. I'm not going to take anymore review submissions until LittleBigPlanet 2 comes out, until then I'll be busting my gut finishing the queue list right now.

That is an excellent question. For all regular purposes, yes it is only one review. The main difference is that I give more than one score for level clusters, and reviewing a series tends to be a much larger review than most reviews tend to be.
In the case of a series, I give scores to each individual level, then average out the scores (and tweak it mildly if necessary) at the end for a final grade that represents what I thought of the series as a whole.

So to directly answer your question, yes a series will count as one review and a good few hours out of my schedule.

I let you know that I'm working on 3rd pyramid now and should be ready before april. I don't know how you will review all of them? You see 2 parts are already done but when 3rd part will be ready (last one) then 3 of them will be one big trilogy. Will you review 2 of them in one thread as series and then you will add review of 3rd part (say after 2 monts) and you will give final verdict? 3rd one will take me long to create because I don't have enough time and I want to make 3rd pyramid better as other parts, I have to . I don't know you will like them because they are much "different" as some of other levels, they are very long and various anyway, they are complex levels with a lot of unique puzzles. Also they have "different" storyline, I mean "sackboy is talking to the player" (a lot of situation jokes). From technical side they are done very well, I mean they are so long and so various and they don't have any bugs and any glitches. Thermo is maxed out very well I think. I hope you will like them and I'm waiting for your opinion and some good advices to make those levels really good. I know they still need some of changes and they are not perfect but I want to make them worth 5 stars if that's possible. Main idea is good but design and graphic could be better (thermo is problem).
