Doctor Who: Quest for the Crystals

Archive: 22 posts

A quick level in tribute to the some of the early series of the British SciFi cult classic (none of your modern spiky haired good looking young doctors here! ) The action opens aboard a stricken space station and you must seek the Doctors assisstance in collecting crystals to power the shields. Pilot the TARDIS to safety through the spinning dangers of the space nexus! Survive those perils and you may cross dimensions and be granted a behind the scenes peek at the BBC technicians hard at work.

Bonus points can be scored by stickering the Cybermen and enemy TVs, best achieved by staying low near the BBC effects guys.

A fantastic level, one would expect no less from royalty, you are truly worthy of your crown.
Here are a few things i think would make a fantastic level even better.
-The initial introduction camera can be re activated multiple times not a major issue but could be easily amended.
-After the first cinematic the small jump you have to do to continue is hard to see because of the camera angle, either making a small ramp on one end or changing the camera angle for that bit would change this.
-Just after you get the asteroid shield failure message the camera zooms out a bit causing the background to disappear leaving those 'to much to load' yellow exclamation marks.
-Tardis movement is a little slow making it very hard to get all the crystals.
-Also if the Tardis could spin round and make a more sound effects when hit by a hazard it would make you feel more in danger and more involved.
-Re-creating the old Doctor Who music for the space nexus would make it more reminiscent of the era.
Love the tom baker costume and K-9

Huhu I queque your level cause it sounds really interesting and nice. I look forward to play your level I'm really sorry that I'm not so good in given long feedback cause I'm from germany and my english is not good enough. I don't know many words I need to describe it in english. If i could write and spell what I think or get help with writing, I'll come back again and give you a second feedback

Could you please leave a feedback at my level too?

Thanks for the constructive feedback, I have already queued your level for a play, the level title attracted me already.
I will implement all your suggestions over the next couple of nights, all great ideas!
No chance on the original DrWho music though, the music sequencer is still a complete mystery to me...would be epic though to hear the familiar Dum da Dum-Dum Da Dum-AAAAAAHHHOOO!

Wow you did so great. the level is so complex looking , and the zoom out views made my jaw drop. i played a couple times trying to figure out how you did everything. it turned out so beautifully. the only thing i would suggest is adding a button to the box you ride in, to make it dodge in the direction you have the joystick turned. well wonderfull job i hearted it so i can go back and try to make the highscore. one of the more funner survival challenges ive played. <32011-06-24 14:36:00

Yep the source material may be unfamiliar to USA members except for Scifi nuts! A much loved british institution especially earlier incarnations.
To fill you in on some of the background DrWHo is a superhero who can transform into a giant metal canine blasting lasers from his eyes as he battles his arch nemesis the nefarious Womble around the galaxy!

thanks for the feedback Pi, I'll work on adding some more fun features to the tardis as suggested but one of the key features of the TV show is the fact the Doctor can never really control the Tardis (see what I did there...passing off sloppy creating as deliberate lol!)

*GASP* MY favorite Doctor! In the queue now and will play as soon as I can.

And the best Doctor ever to boot! With his manical smile, bulging eyes, psychadelic scarf and dodgy pockets filled with Jelly babies!
Last see voicing little Britain!

at the risk of turning the thread into a doctor who discussion!.....

closely followed in order of preference by john Pertwee...Christopher Ecclestone and Peter Cushing in the film versions.

I only have the first measures (? is it the same word as in french) of the original Dr Who music on a sequencer, but I can give it to you if you're interested. You may remember hearing them on the menu screen of my Dr Who level. I know It's not perfect, it was the best I was able to produce myself.

Anyway, I' played the level a few days ago and enjoyed the theme, atmosphere, and the many references to Doctor Who. The gameplay was ok, but not as fun as expected. The way the TARDIS move and difficulty to avoid some projectiles made the journey not as good as it could be. And I broke the TARDIS on the TV screens during the last part of the level (but I was still able to complete the level, so it's not a game breaker).

But it was still a good level, especially for Who fans !

Thanks !

(If you want return the F4F favor, you can choose a level in my signature. I remember you already play my Lost Soul level, so if you have time you can either try my Dr Who: Missing Star level (the first level I've published on LBP, so do not expect a brilliant level), or LittleBigMagnet, a short plateformer.)

Thanks for the feedback Slurm, I'll pop onto your level and listen to the sequencer.
Yep I was aware that the Tardis could be damaged by collision with the TVs but that was part of the ironic vibe in the backstage BBC section reflecting the shoddy wobbling sets, styrofoam props etc.that were an endearing part of the original shows.

Bonus points can be scored by stickering the Cybermen and enemy TVs, best achieved by staying low near the BBC effects guys.

I've played this level tonight. I think that is great only one thing, the sound of paintinator sensor (or what is that), I would turn it off.

Sorry for my bad English C:

Thnks for the play and nice feedback Bryoshe. The noise was emitted by the impact sensor and commbined with the diminishing health bar helps make the player aware of their impending doom. I will be adding a few new sound effects to up the impact of the impacts!
Your english is fine too. : )

Great set and tardis design. Initially I didn't realise this was a survival challenge and I got hypnotized by the spiral tube graphic. Immediately when I saw this graphic / effect it took me back to the old Dr Who. However I soon snapped out of it and realised I could maneuver the tardis. The gameplay here is very well done, starting out fairly easy, and slowly increasing in difficulty as you go. The dangers seam to be fairly random and I couldn't see much revidence of repitition.

Smiley faced and hearted.

Very nice opening, lots of detail and animation in your objects. When I got to the part where I was collecting the crystals, I wasn't sure how to tell how I was doing with the collection part. I don't remember seeing anything that indicated how close I was to getting all of the crystal I needed. I assumed that there was a certain number of them I needed to collect, was that a wrong assumption? The visual and audio clues for the health of the Tardis were good. I knew how close I was getting to destruction. Also, the background visuals were amazing. Very mesmerizing.

Please give my F4F level, Are We There Yeti? (http://lbp.me/v/z5y83j) , a try.
