Containment: An addicting top down shooter with orignal music (Spotlighted) (Video)

Containment

"What is Containment??:

Containment is a top down shooter created entirely by one determined guy from start to finish.

"Ugh, no. Not another top down shooter. What makes Containment any different?":

Containment is different for one reason, it takes a premise and wraps a unified coat of polish around the entire thing. Everything visual is made from scratch from neon and holographic materials (And actually looks nice instead of being thrown together. Every song is catchy and reminiscient of the bullet hell games of yore.

"So it looks nice. My car looks nice. But it drives awfully. Hows containment drive?" :

Containment drives well, thanks for asking, guy who uses car metaphors. Some people do just enough legwork in their levels to get the premise, no matter how thrown together it may look, out into the imagisphere as quickly as possible.

Containment took 5 months of on and off work, and it was tested extensively to find that perfect sweet spot of comfort in the controls and movement. It's the kind of level you can get lost in for upwards of an hour because it's not just a cool idea, it's a cool idea that was executed well.

"An hour? Eff! What makes you think i'd play for an hour?"

The menus, music, and intro are all made to feel like you're playing a very high quality flash game. That surprisingly has had quite the immersive effect on folks who have played the game.

There's several game modes to actually play. You can start off playing the Arcade mode to learn the ropes. In this mode, you must fight off various types of enemies to earn points. (Points are doled out conservatively so that way you really feel the effects of your rewards for being awesome) While the enemies are frantically trying to squash your ship, small containers housing viruses will spawn into the levels. This are the real point payouts. At any point in the game you can deploy a half of a containment shell, when two containment shells are spawned they will quickly seek each other out, bond together, and incinerate anything caught between them. your goal is to locate and obliterate the viruses as they spawn into the level.

Every 5000 points you receive an upgrade to your weapon. As the game progresses through the waves, you move up from generic weapons like single and wave shots to more inventive and intense weapons that move far beyond normal lasers.

And the icing on the cake? Dying doesn?t take you to a scoreboard. It takes you to a continue screen where you can actually try again. That?s right, you wont be kicked out of the level and forced to restart just because you aren?t good at something you just played for the first time in your life.
If you die and you?re happy with your score, then you can opt of a continue, save your score to the LBP servers and peace out.

?Well. . .that?s sorta cool. What other modes are there??

Besides the arcade mode, there?s the Challenge grid. You can play through the grid to win prizes based around the assets in the level (Most importantly, the music). Every time you load up challenge you?re given a certain criteria you have to meet in order to win that challenges prize. To 100% the level is a challenging and rewarding experience. Every challenge has that effect where dying just makes you want to try again even harder.

Containment took a good bit of time to make. I'd really appreciate plays if only to culminate feedback and make myself better as a designer.

Spotlight Impressions

Nightshade94123 takes a standard twin stick shooter, adds a sprinkle of humour and a whole bucket of polish to produce Containment - a shooter with a twist. In addition to fending off hordes of merciless enemies, you are tasked with finding viruses in the level and, well, containing them! This provides you with an additional bonus and speeds you through the levels. Add to this the fact that you have not only one, but two game modes, and a helpful tutorial, and this level is really a complete game rather than a single level! It plays just like a flash game (you know, the good ones) - simple mechanics, speedy gameplay, and polished graphics combining to create a glorious piece of addictive action.

I found myself laughing, throwing my controller at the cat, to being full of happiness and satisfaction THEN falling into a deep depression. And all I was doing was playing this delightful level made by Nightshade! In essence, it is a top down shooter as you ka-pow! your enemies here, there and well, everywhere. But there are other surprises in store as Ria has pointed out above including capturing viruses for an extra large portion of points! Also, every 5000 of these points you get will garner another weapon power up that is sure to up your arsenal to the max. There is nothing I can really add apart from finally recommending this level to all you lovely people out there. You won't regret it.
-AgentBanana

Now this is a twin stick shooter I think everyone should play. From the highly polished tutorial to the games several modes. There is a lot of things to do. And what starts out as a slow shooter quickly ramps up the difficulty as you level up and progress through it. Some great custom music in there too makes it a real joy to play, this really does feel like a whole game contained within LBP2. And it has a fun little story to go along with it, I think this level.. game has everything! Do not miss this, a real gem that deserves more attention.

I thought the introduction was rather unique. Voice acting made it that much more appreciated. The font used was seen a few times before, but it fits with your game. I first thought "several" meant more than 2, so I was a bit disappointed seeing only 2 game modes. However, I only really care for the core of the game, which is the Arcade mode. All other modes are just bonuses to me, so no points taken off there. The tutorial option was pretty cool.

To the game itself..... good news and bad news....

•First off I would like to mentioned that I had the highest score on the leaderboards, but, MM decided to block all new scores from uploading due to little children abusing the scoring system.... I won't name names. But this isn't your problem =).
•Though it was a twin stick game, it just didn't feel like it due to the fact that you're required to press or hold the R1 button to shoot. The only reasons why you had done this control scheme was the fact that a different upgrade weapon level up yields different control schemes, you're either pressing the R1 for single shots or holding on it for an automatic shot. I personally thought that you should have stuck with just using the right stick to aim and shoot. Trust me when I say this, I am considered probably one of the best twin stick gamers in the world and this felt okay, but it can be better.
•Using the detonated capsules...... though I found them quite useless unless you want to grab 1000 easy points off the viruses, other than that, I have no use for them. I was hoping they served a better purpose. It glitches about 25% of the time as well. Where, even without momentum, the first half capsule will fly itself across the screen and ruins your chance at scoring a virus hit.
•Upgrade system was associated with the scoring system, which can end the game fast or slow depending on your play style. The enemies and waves only grow harder solely based upon your scores and not the time allotted. So for those slow learners, this game gives you the chance to experience the game before consuming you later on..... however, this is a double edge sword, because this method gives no rewards for those who play harder and faster.
•Upgrading weapons.... how can I say this.... to me, upgrading means, better quality. However, this game has that with the first few upgrades.... but the latter upgrades actually makes you more vulnerable and makes you feel unarmed. I don't wish to give out any spoilers, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. That actually kind of ruined the game for me just a bit, because I was stuck with more enemies onscreen and a much, much weaker weapon than I had with my very first weapon.
•Visuals, hmmmm... I think it'll feel much better if the camera was panned out a few more percentage. It gave me that feeling like if I were to move up or down, I'd bump into an unseen enemy who's goal is to shoot and crash into you. Going from left to right isn't such a big deal because it's just barely enough to see oncoming traffic. I thought each and every enemies involved fit the game very well. The capsule looks almost out of place until you actually combine the two together, then it looks fitting.
•Enemies, well, it's hard to distinguish enemy fire or enemy debris. They have the same color and nearly the same look, so most of the time I'm practically trying to dodge anything that is red. Since I'm a very experienced gamer, I do that with ease, but for others and average gamers, this might get you a negative feedback. I do kind of grow tired of games having enemies just simply trying to bash into you, so the uniqueness of this game kind of merged a bit into the rest of the other games. Though this game is unique in it's own rights, it still fits into the same category as many others out there.
•Controls, like I've mentioned earlier, R1 as a firing button was a bit awkward, but I've played many other twin stick games that utilizes the same layout. However, I didn't like the capsule being the Triangle button, because you're forced to take your thumb off of the right stick, which pretty much disables you from aiming. I highly suggest designating the capsule to a shoulder button on the controller. Face buttons don't mix well for twin stick shooters, trust me, I know.
•Glitches.... hmmm, on my first run, I was trying to upload my score after dying, it had asked if I wished to continue, "Yeah" or "Nah". After pressing Circle for declining to continue, I was stuck in limbo, black screen, but the buttons and options were still functional.... so I started smashing buttons and I guess I hit the start arcade mode again, which erased my score and had me starting over.... big let down. But, that doesn't bother me too much to give the game a bad rating simply on a little glitch, it's the overall game that led me to give this game a Yay and a Heart =).

I would say more, but I have to be somewhere, I may edit this for later.

Well that certainly is alot of feedback. None of it out of line either.

*Serious bond villan tone* Except for one thing.

One. . . thing. . .

The font wasn't actually snatched from some font level. I made it.

Everything else is accurate though. I do intend to tweak and fix things here and there. And none of what you mentioned is (for the most part) difficult to achieve. However i trust you understand that certain things cant be completely overhauled this "late in the. . . game" (HA HA! PUN!).

"What is getting fixed?" I might have heard you ask. (Or not. My fan is on and it's rather difficult to hear sometimes.)

Enemy sizing is being altered and re configured. Believe it or not, the camera is actually pulled out 100%, so instead we'll make those naughty buggers smaller.

More specifically, the enemy debris will consist entirely of a unified effect. You won't have to look hard to tell whats what.

The points system is being altered to provide more incentive to go after the viruses.

And turbo mode and certain later weapons will also come equipped with a shield so that you don't always have to be looking at your ship instead of the weapons effects.

And speaking of weapons, I understand where you're coming from regarding your gripes. However, if you're being truthful about your score, the weapon you had when you died was sort of the first really difficult one to use. Which i don't believe is too much to handle for a measly 5000 points. Especially because if you make it to the last one, you'll know that you can definitely relax a bit and rest any worries that you're in significant danger.

Oh, don't get me wrong Nightshade, I wasn't implying that you stole it. I was merely addressing that the font looks like or very similar to many other games I've come across before. That old-school retro font look. Just like the fonts in my game, I made it myself too, but I've come across other games, even on LBP, that looks nearly just like it or very identical.

Oh trust me when I tell you I had the highest score, this can be proven if you look at many PSN games out there that has a leaderboard system, I'm always at the top ranks, if not rank 1. So I have no reasons to fib. Games in this genre is easy for me. I hadn't had a chance to try out the Challenge mode, simply because I had to go somewhere, but I'll get back to you on that when I play it later on.

Way to be modest...

Thanks for the trolling, at least I was decent enough to give feedback..... and what was your add to this?

.......exactly. Enough said Mr.Troll.... It's okay, I know jealousy when I see one.... haters will hate, that's why you showed up =).

Being modest can be an insult to others, sorry if I couldn't please you. Say there was this very difficult game and I mastered it while others try so hard to beat it, but fail. They say to me "Hey, you're so good at this game," the common modest answer would be "It was nothing".... now think about that for a second.. was I implying that the others were mere amateur with no skills since it was nothing to me and hell for them even while they try their very best.... how am I to know how people take things? How am I to know if they were offended by what I said simply because I was trying to be this "Modest" person.... so which is why I skip all that nonsense and be upfront.

There's no need to be modest on the simple fact that everyone is different and that everyone will take things differently. Heck, I can even say I was offended by your comment about me, even if you didn't meant to, who know exactly how I would feel about that, correct? Now if you don't want to be judged, don't judge others. Keep your thoughts to yourself if you don't want to be replied to.

---------------------------

Now back to the game. I tried your Challenges, which I found quite challenging, only on the survival portion, the bomb mode, was actually very easy all the way through. Still I don't think re-sizing the enemies would do much to help, because you're still limited the view of sight for north and/to south.

Hi there i played this yesterday but i was in a hurry so i will come back to it again. I thought it was pretty cool. I liked the controls as those are the kind i can use best.
If you could tell me how you managed them it would be great as at the moment i am having trouble with the controls of my flying ship in my 40k Space Hulk level.

I agree with a lot of what LoVeRiCe has already said though i didn't get very far in it at all so i haven't seen the later upgrades. I definatley think that the enemies shots should be made more visible from the ships as i died a couple times and didn't even now what had hit me.

The whole look of the game was great and felt very retro indeed as did the music which made the level that much better.

I played the challenge mode a couple times but when i died it came up with challenge ended then went black for a couple secs then that same screen came up again and i couldn't get back to the main menue or the score board so i had to exit the level manally.

Over all i thought it was a great game but just needs a few more tweaks and a bit more modesty. I will play it again in a day or two to see your new updates and to get a better score than i did. Good game

Dude, I was joking. I'm not hating on anything. It's good that you're a skilled gamer, I just implied that your choice of words sounded a little, cocky. I didn't mean to offend you in any way. As you said, everyone is different. We alright now?

Now, as I said in my first post, I will play this as soon as I can. Sounds very interesting.

I only played a few minutes in the main game, I'll return to see the rest.

Positives:
- Intro (added a 'reason' for the game, which I find most others lack)
- Game innovation (nice idea for trapping viruses. Different)
- Visuals (nice, suited the level)

Negatives:
- Got stuck in the tutorial (was messing around and spamming buttons, so perhaps that caused it)
- Colliding with enemies is essentially an instant death (personal complaint because I'm awful, not really an issue, but perhaps a warning..? I dunno)
- Hitting the walls kills you (perhaps a warning...)

Pretty sure I <3'ed and 'ed. If not, I'll do it on my return.

F4F: Not a level, but if you have any ideas for something incredibly unique I could add to my project, I'm always glad to hear them.

Might I add, when you're playing the Challenge mode, if you earn four or more prizes... and ending the game to the leaderboards.... unfortunately, one prize got away, slide all the way to the side of the screen and I was unable to reach it. It was in my view, but there was an invisible wall ceasing me from grabbing that one last prize bubble =(.2011-06-22 13:48:00

Okay, first off; Awesome level, its the first Legitimate game in LBP2 methinks. Secondly, the only downside is the instant death when touched, clunky movements which feel 'One Speed', and menu load times, fix those bits and you'll have a perfect level for ya.2011-06-22 17:29:00

First of all, Sincere thanks to everyone who played the level, just to have fifty plays was a surprise.

Secondly, if anyone who has played it is interested in repeat plays, certain problems like ship speed, screen size, and menu loading times have been remedied.

Anyone who's published levels in here will have feedback on their stuff soon enough

I have to say you did an awesome job on promoting your level in this thread. I enjoyed reading your take on things and it did in fact give me a nudge to go try try it. The only downside to your level hype was that you might have hyped to a point where the pressure is really on you to live up to it. Not a bad idea, if you like that kind of pressure. I'm glad to see you're still busy perfecting this even after all the hype. Nice job.

I believe I played this after your latest updates, so I don't recall any immediate issues with enemies or their projectiles. My virus trappers seemed to work okay too, not that I was very good at deploying them. There was at least one time that the background changed to a color combo that made seeing the enemies projectiles a little more difficult.

I went through the tutorial first and although I found it useful, it might have been a tad to slow to make it's points. Besides the pacing here, it was well done. I regretfully, didn't get a chance to try the challenge mode yet, but I'll be back to check it out soon. I believe one of your best features was being able to reply until you got a score you liked. Nice feature! I also thought the ship controls responded well. I'm writing this feedback a day later after playing, but I don't seem to recall if you had a way for me to know how many lives I had? Did I miss it? It seemed like my first attempt was over quite quick, but next go lasted awhile.

Thanks for the review! I'll try to address everything here:

Color change:
I have not put anything in the game to make the background change colors other than when you grab the powerup item, which makes the background turn orange but then gives you an extremely high-powered weapon and an invincible shield, so it shouldn't be an issue.
Tutorial pacing:
Thanks for the feedback on this, I will go ahead and make things move faster through the tutorial section as soon as I post some screenshots.
Lives:
There are no lives, you can literally keep playing until you die. In real life.

Just played again and it was great to see the challenges worked properly now as they are quite entertaining i liked how once you have completed a challenge it is ticked.
The bomb challenge was my favourite.

The game playes really well and it is very enjoyable its good to see that despite your descriptions about how polished your level is you are still polishing as people are finding problems. Soon it'll be so polished i'll be able to not just see my reflection in it but my reflections reflection and so forth.

Great level and i will come back to it because i only finished two of the bomb survivals and want to finish them all.

Just played this level and it was spectacular.

VISUALS:
The opening movie is very interesting (The movement of the computer's mouth is well done), and the retro design of the ship and enemies looks really polished.

SOUND:
Very good retro music.

GAMEPLAY:
The usage of the ship is well put, and the idea of destroying the viruses is a nice addition to this shooter. I would have been in the top 10 if it wasn't for the scoreboard disable.

OVERALL:
It's a really fun shooter game. A yay, heart, and positive review.

I've had the luxury of playing your level again because it really is one of the best games i've seen since the introduction lbp2 and that is perfect with a clean, pleasant and appealing to the beginning of what I loved Containment the game is fun, varied and particularly addictive, i welcome all the different weapons that is within your level, benefits, everything really is surprising in view.

I also like the music is designed for the perfect level, this level seems futuristic and retro that's perfect, i liked it a lot since you posted prinicipio flawed as i remember i did everything to be the first in your scoreboard but in the end good position and now is the problem because there is not kept my promise final score yet when it will play back the scoresboards again and try to be first.

My only complaint I have is that within the level i would have liked to get the option of a life scattered around the level but still the option of getting another game is also good.

For my part i give you a BIG YAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!! heart level and the author <3 certainly welcome to come with LBP and do one of the best levels i've had a chance to play

Since I played your level around a few nights ago, here's my quarter:

The cinematic beginning was a nice feature, and the voiceover a nice touch. At first I just pulled the two switches to see what that would do. Surprisingly, it took me to the start of the actual game. Didn't realize you had to activate the glowing button to trigger it.

The gameplay itself, secondly, is a massive hardworking project for you that delivered amazingly. The shooting controls were no problem, just a minor change of pace for other people, though. Personally, I had no problem with it. Baiting players with prizes is another good factor I could point out.

Overall, it pretty much fits the term "top-down shooter" and enhances it completely. I gave it a <3 and a for its replay value and as a whole. Nothing fancy, just pure futuristic shoot-em-up.

If it's possible for you, can you play my newest level Funoranium for feedback? Thanks!

I've tried Containment.
I liked the humor at the opening and the setting, and the mood really fits. It's fun, but a bit too challenging. Sometimes I couldn't pick up power ups, I couldn't kill enemies, and I would just go through the enemies' bullets. The controls are tight, and it makes the game a lot easier than it would be if they weren't. I also enjoyed the gameplay, but it was hard to adapt to as enemies came running towards me very quickly. I wouldn't recommend this to beginners, it's pretty difficult. I also couldn't really get the menu to do what I wanted. There's definitely replay value, but I wouldn't replay it too often. It can get repetitive.
Overall, I really liked this. It has a few difficult bits to figure out, and it can be too fast paced at some parts, but it's good.

Correct. It's definitely difficult. As such, it helps to provide that feeling of jubilation of getting just a tad farther than the last time you played. I was influenced by arcade shooters of yore rather than ages 6+ LBP levels.

As for the more technical aspects. Are you sure you're definitely aware of what were power-ups and what weren't? I've never heard one instance of them not registering properly and would like to fix it if it has indeed happened. Secondly, are you also sure that what you thought were enemy bullets was not debris or your own fire?

If you provide more information, i'll dig around and see what I can find. It's mortifying for something like that to happen mid game.

Appreciate your feedback.

Thanks for tipping me off on my level, here's what I think of yours:
Well, to start the introduction a music at the begging are... wow. The little computer is so...perfect!
Now for the game-play:
Well, as you mentioned it IS VERY addicting. I love the fluid motions and the music goes with the game nicely. It's wonderful with the two game modes, and I personally couldn't put it down. Nothing bad to say, excellent, Wonderful! Everybody should try out this phenomenal level!

Hello, Nightshade, I played your Containment. You hit a lot of right things on this level. I really do feel like I'm playing one of those twin stick shooters from the PSN store. The intro is humorous and very well done. There's a really nice, simple tutorial and the music is spot on and excellent. I love how the ships explode into an awesome display of flying fragments!

My only gripe I have is that you die in one touch of the enemy ships making you start all the way over. It makes sense for it to be this way like how it was in Super Stardust HD but you get lives to start you where you left off. The thing is, when you head one direction and one of the enemy ships are moving at you in that same direction, you barely have any recovery time, if any. It came to the point where I had to keep track of the general position of each ship but then the turrets came out and everything just got thrown out the window lol. Maybe add a note in the description that this level is more for experienced twin stick shooting players.

Overall, a really nice level. I could see this getting Mm picked soon and I hope it does. I gave it a yay and a heart. Well done.

Just played this and thought it was brilliant. The description says it all. A look down shooter that is really really polished. I gave it 2 plays and thought I was kicking some serious butt until I saw the high scores. Never mind. I never was really any good at arcade style shooters. Everything about this level is thought out wonderfully. The intro is a work of art by itself. I am trying to think of what the intro reminds me of. It has bit of an ICO feel about it with the gentle background music. Excellent controls, audio and intro. However the graphics are a stand out for me. The design of the health bar and the spaceships are very professional.

Well done to you Sir. Smiley faced and hearted.

Well, I must admit you got me there thinking: "Ohh not another top down shooter."
BUT:
Your level was simply mind blowing. Definately the best shooter out there!
First of all a great intro and a perfect use of that music track.
But the visuals were just awesome! The gameplay too! (Containing those bombs and viruses, ingenious!)
The music was great as well!

I'm sorry for my lack of words and that my review isn't very detailed...but I thought that I tell you what I think about your level!

Finally played this level the other day, after having it in my queue for about 2 months

Visually it was very nice, especially the menus which were excellent. Gameplay was simple, as you'd expect this type of game to be, but the addition of having to contain the viruses bumped it up a notch to give it a bit of a unique edge. The voice acting was very good, and I love that you added a bit of humour in there, which I like to do with my levels.

Good job.

If you're still up for some F4F, please play my BattleSnake level and leave feedback, links in sig below. Danke.

Played this level the other night and was amazed at how polished and well designed it was. Obviously a labour of love judging from it's first publish date I imagine loads of feedback and re-editing has brought it to the point where it is one of the most polished levels I've seen on LBP, all the remarkable given that retro style levels can often seem so unpolished because of their simplistic visual interface.
i really enjoyed the cut scene at the start with the graphic computer instruction scene, then into the game itself. Levels like these often fall down due to unwieldy controls but these were smooth, responsive and intuitive. I haven't a clue how all the tech works, especially given the various game modes which really offer replay value for the hi-score addicts. Congrats on a great level!
