Counter decrement rather than increment

Archive: 9 posts

All I want to do is press x and have a counter go down by one (it starts full). That's all. I know I need to send a negative signal but can I do that? Nope. Feeling kinda dumb, but have now reached that frustration point where I've got to ask else waste more of my life.

Please, put me out of my misery...

Your right. simply wire a grab switch (or whatever switch you wish to use into a Direction Combiners NEGATIVE input and wire the combiners output to your counter.
Then make the current state of the counter the same as the target number

or just invert the counter and wire x directly to it.2011-06-20 03:04:00

Thanks for responses - will try the dirn combiner a bit later. I had started down that path, but used splitter with x wired to combiner input and the counter to negative output. Think my understanding was slightly askew...

@babyface - that sounds simpler but not sure it solves the problem. You're suggesting I'm wiring x (whilst in controlinator) and inverting the counter - that would just effect the output, wouldn't it? If I'm missing an obvious trick here, please say!

Will post back with any success/fails

Thanks once again - gotto love this forum

i think babyface's technique should work - rather than simply inverting the output it actually fills the counter to the target count and then any input (x in this case) makes it count down one step.2011-06-20 15:41:00

Furthermore, if you are looking into setting a counter to a (non-reset) specific value instantly, counters may not be your tool of choice. A selector can often do this job: you can start events at specific "values" by wiring an output to somewhere and "set value" by wiring its inputs. You can "add" and "subtract" by feeding positive and negative signals into its cycle input; preventing it from looping is not too hard to do either. A selector does not output an analog signal, though, like the one that you'd feed into a dimming light bulb or a positional sequencer.

My point: sometimes your first thought is "counter", but may not always be exactly what you are looking for.

BabyFace's idea should work, because Mm wouldn't make it only invert the output, it would also invert the signal strength, therefore the difference between your normal output % and 100%.

For example, if I have a counter at 1/10, my normal signal strength is 10%.

If I invert it, I take 10% - 100% = 90%, so my inverted value would be 90%.

The output decreases as the input value increases, as in standard subtraction property.

Mm simply visualizes this by making the counter count down.

In actuality, your best bet is to try it out!

Happy gadding.

well this way is probably the simplest way simply take out the counter, and take out a NOT gate it can be found in the logic section of your tools bag. the next thing you do is simply connect the counter's output to the NOT gates input (connect the counters "wire" to the NOT gate's input) what the NOT gate does is simply activates its output whenever its input isnt activated so say you have a tag sensor hooked up to a not gate and the NOT gate is hooked up to an explosive if there is no tag around for the tag sensor then the NOT gate activates the explosive and it explodes so it does the exact opposite of what it is told to do i hope that didnt sound too complicated im a logic expert basically and it doesnt really sound all that complicated to me2011-06-22 20:00:00

lol actually simplist way was already stated by i believe his name is...babyface unless of course you would like to do like kris said and try different methods. btw isnt fun unless its true.(?~?)
