Best movie you've ever seen?

Archive: 33 posts

Hands down, is the movie "Senna". A documentary about Aryton Senna that just recently come out. More of an experience than a film. Recommend it to anyone. Fantastic movie.2011-06-19 04:56:00

The race-driver Aryton Senna, it's a very touching story. I'm a car fanatic myself but I went with a friend who has no interest in racing and he loved it too. Accessible for everyone. 2011-06-19 05:04:00

My first instinct tells me to go with "O Brother Where Art Thou?"

The last movie to have a strong effect on me was "Get Low"
The title makes it sound like a different kind of movie.
Its about a hermit who arranges then attends his own funeral.

Other favorites that may reach top place depending on mood:
The Life Aquatic
Kung Pow
Robocop
Army of Darkness
Suburban Commando
Shoalin Soccer
King of California
They Live
Conan the Barbarian (both movies)

I'm still getting over the excitement from watching X-Men: First Class, that was so awesome. Not really sure what the best movie I've ever seen is. The Fifth Element is pretty up there.2011-06-19 07:23:00

conan the barbarian? the best movie? oookay. They Live? with rowdy roddy piper, granted it's a good movie but the best? Man, I apologize. Who am I to pick on your list? It's your list and opinion.

Personally I would have to go with
the original Spartacus with Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier, Tony Curtis directed by Kubrick. Classic
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Lord of the Rings trilogy
My Name is Nobody

but of those....Spartacus is still my all time favorite

I really need to see Spartacus, How have I still not seen it?

I basically just threw Conan on there.
Wanted to add a move with Arnold but wasn't sure which so I picked the first one that came to mind.
Replace it with the Mad Max trilogy.
I enjoy movies that were high quality at the time and still good.
Only now that they have aged they are also pretty funny in unintentional ways too.

And Kazaam!
That movie is comedy gold, he even comes out of a boombox.

A movie with Arnold better than Conan? That's no problem. What about Terminator, Total Recall, Predator, or Running Man? Terminator would probably win on there, though I really enjoyed Total Recall and Running Man too.2011-06-19 18:49:00

Sorry, I seem to be a bit confused...
You all seem to be talking about the "Best Movie You've Ever Seen?" - and then mention "Conan"/"Running Man"/"Terminator"/"Total Recall" etc?

On what planet does Arnie get taken seriously as an actor?
All his films are schlock- without exception, as is the man himself - and he has all of the acting ability of a festering splinter - only a festering splinter might at least be able to induce some kind of emotional response - so that's probably an unfair comparison. He has 'less' acting ability than a festering splinter.

Want to see an actual "Movie" - one with a script, acting, directing, cinematography etc?
Then watch "Titus".... probably one of the greatest films ever made (and I bet not a single one of you have seen it - philistines!).
Anthony Hopkins (arguably one of the finest actors of this [or any] generation), giving his finest performance to one of Shakespeare's (arguably the greatest playwright of this [or any] generation) greatest plays.... all done in a fresh and original style that offers more and more meaning on each subsequent viewing.
It's a proper "Film Buffs" film.

Which is why no-one has even heard of it

Never mind.... if you think that Arnold Schwarzenegger is actually an 'actor' - then it's probably not your kind of film

Well, add my "Hollywood Blockbuster" cultural megaphenomenon to the list: The Empire Strikes Back is, by far, the greatest movie of all time. Period. I'm not biased, of course...

But, I have several others in my top movies that come to mind (in no order):

Fight Club
Shawshank Redemption
Legends of the Fall
Inception
Rear Window
The Usual Suspects
American History X
No Country For Old Men
Kill Bill Vol. 1
V for Vendetta

...to name a few. There's plenty of other movies that aren't coming to mind at the moment, but yeah.

Its your own fault if you don't appreciate the humor and fun of cheesy action movies.
To be a good action movie actor you have to pretend to not care about anything at all.
And sound cool when you say one-liners that often include bad puns.
That is why Arnold is awesome.
(though Man on Fire and Taken are really good and emotional action movies)

I think I saw part of Titus, its one of those movies with longish silent parts that make you think about what is going on innit?
Tend to like those, especially if its Kubrick.

Speaking of which, if you want to watch a movie that will haunt you for days with its weirdness and possible implied meaning, Eraserhead wins in that department IMO.
Zardoz is another movie that will practically send you over the edge.

But to be honest I like to read things that try to have 'meaning' from books.
Movies and TV use lots of things I consider underhanded and lazy to cause emotion.

Running Man was the one that I was trying to think of.
I love Total Recall too, Piers Anthony liked it so much he wrote a book based on it.
But its unwise to watch while your eating dinner.

I watched Running Man less than a week ago.... and I stand by my critique... it's a hideous abortion of a film. I don't think there was anyone on screen who could actually act. Sure, they could "say their lines" - but that's hardly "acting";

And the one liners were just cringe-worthy... I could have thought up better one-liners in my sleep. It also confuses who Arnolds character actually is?
Is he the good guy? - Then why does he appear to take so much glee when dispatching his opponents.... never leaving them without the obligatory throw-away line.
Just burnt a guy to death? "What a hothead!"
Just garroted someone with razor wire? "What a pain in the neck!"
Just stuck your thumbs through someone eyes? "Ha Ha - I just stuck my thumbs through your eyes, Sucker!"

It's indicative of American morality, in that "I was wronged, and therefore any amount of evil I subsequently do is completely justified - even if it is just naked, blood thirsty revenge".

It's a "postcard" of a film... in that it could be summed up in it's entirety on the back of a postcard.

What aggravates me even more, is that it was actually based on a Stephen King short story - that was actually not too bad as short-stories go... and The Running Man is nothing like the short story

Sure, there is a time and place for throw away, hollywood-cheeseburger, switch-your-brain-off summer blockbusters.... but a "Best Movie of All Time" list is not that place

Actually I think CGI movies are some of the best made films around.
They are proper "family" entertainment - rather than just Kids films.

In fact, I think Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole is one of the best CGI films in a long time. It reminded me of all my favourite films as a child, like The Secrets of Nimh, or The Dark Crystal.

I'm trying to think of some CGI films that I didn't enjoy and I'm struggling.

B-Movie was probably the worst of them.
But ones like Wall-E or Up... instant classics. (anyone who doesn't immediately burst into tears in the opening 10 minutes of Up clearly isn't human)

The original Japanese version of Godzilla. Very dark movie with a strong message. Highly recommend it. The US version pales in comparison to the Japanese version....2011-06-21 20:12:00

Wall-E is an AMAZING film. I still have to see Up though.

Then all is forgiven! (I actually quite like the Conan movies)

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Could be one of the funniest films of all time!

Dr. Strangelove confuses me. I guess I didn't get it. For me the funniest part was the end when Strangelove went on that rant of his, and I'm disappointed that the movie didn't have more of it, because the rest of it really wasn't that funny for me.

Anyone mentioned Princess Bride yet? lol

Bugger it I like too many movies too much to decide on anything but my #1.

Dr. Strangelove gets better the more times I see it.
I only liked certain parts the first time but noticed a lot more things later.
The more you think about the plot and what people are saying the better.
"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!"

Yeah, that's what's great about Dr.Strangelove - each time I watch it I find new things to laugh about - Peter Sellers performances in all his different roles are genius. One of the best Satire films ever made. (of course it is, It's a Stanley Kubrick film)

My favourite line isn't obviously funny - but the way it's delivered and the context make it absolutely hilarious;
"Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children's ice cream."

No - Not the Ice-Cream, won't someone please think of the children!!!

That and "Precious Bodily Fluids!"
