Decoration Tips and Techniques
Archive: 37 posts
Hi fellow sackthings. This is one of my first tutorials, so hopefully what I'm trying to show and explain to everyone will come across clearly and make at least a little sense to someone. My goal in this tutorial is to show different tips and techniques that I've used to make some objects that don’t look like they were made in LBP. I know each of us have his or her own way of doing things, so it’s nice to see other’s perspectives; especially when it comes to LBP. Here are the tips and techniques that I have used and some pictures to go along with what I’m trying to explain. (Some of these techniques will become obsolete when the Move Pack comes out, but I'll be more than ok with that.) Number one tip... be creative. Nothing beats playing a level and being amused when you figure out what the creator used to create his or her props and objects. Simple but effective... place decorations and stickers on the sides of materials. Create and use custom stickers. (Sticker Studio... or whatever it’s going to be called will take custom stickers to a whole new level. This will probably be my favorite addition to the game) http://db.tt/sCnU9Qr When decorations are placed on darkmatter, it's possible to get the decorations on varying angles. (thinkness from left to right: thick, thack, theck, thin ( this will apply in the next tips)) http://db.tt/FSX6qAM Use the material changer to change the darkmatter to hologram material. The decorations will keep their position and angle. http://db.tt/UEgcZnm The different thickness allow the decorations to be inside other materials and the placement can make all or some part of the decoration hidden. (turn the brightness of the hologram material to 0% brightness; only the decoration will be visible in Play Mode) Decoration’s undersides can be used to get surprising results. Place any decoration on the side of hologram material (tweaked to 0% brightness) and rotate it according so the bottom of the decoration is shown. (We will see this technique later when I show how my portal button is made) Black stickers on hologram material make it invisibile, even when the brightness is turned all the way up. Now stickers that are lighter than black will show through. (Obsolete when the Sticker Panel Material and Sticker Paint Studio comes out) Use invisible rubber or invisible darkmatter for collisions with decorations. (I think everyone knows this glitch but haven’t applied it like this) Layer decorations to get desired effects. (I used this technique quite a bit on my elevator) http://db.tt/7Qr9wik Now, to see how all these techniques put together, I’ll take apart my portal button. http://db.tt/iJhn3E0 Lets turn down the lights so we can see the custom sticker for the surface of the button. The custom sticker I made for the button is actually white. I tweaked the hologram material to red; now the sticker shows the hologram’s color. http://db.tt/64g7kFX Here’s the button’s decoration turned right-side up... Lol, you would’ve never guessed. http://db.tt/hfOE6lE Here are all the pieces taken apart. http://db.tt/UTHlGK1 From another angle http://db.tt/TNfjmRy I talked eariler about using invisible rubber for collisions; my button has a layer of it so sackboy and other things can interact with it. Here are some pictures of other objects I’ve been working on. http://db.tt/CRPk2yl http://db.tt/dT8KVgZ http://db.tt/3bMU5Uv http://db.tt/AfY8lMD http://db.tt/60R2Wq6 http://db.tt/FB957Mu http://db.tt/OZGoTKU http://db.tt/Zexnre5 Here is the decoration layering technique I was talking about. As you can see in these examples, it only takes a little creativity and a little more time to get things looking pretty good. Most of the time spent when creating like this is lining up and getting all of the decorations in the right spot. To aid in this intricate process, I created a Create Mode tool called the L2 Camera Tool. I have a tutorial explaining how and what it is here https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=58284-L2-Camera-Tool Hopefully you could take something from what I have learned and make your levels look even more awesome. | 2011-06-18 21:46:00 Author: Unknown User |
These are good tips, especially the one about using a rounded material like dark matter for different angles and then changing to holo. I used almost all of these techniques in the BloodStone Saga. One other interesting thing about decorations, the initial size they are placed sets their z depth, resizing the material they are on only affects x y...this allows the decoration to be distorted non-proportionatly for some useful results...I used this to create the boat hull and cacti. | 2011-06-18 22:27:00 Author: fullofwin Posts: 1214 |
You are a freaking genius, man. This will help ALOT | 2011-06-18 23:11:00 Author: TNSv Posts: 302 |
Jeez, those pictures look incredible! When will that level be released? Great tips too, never would've thought of most of that stuff. | 2011-06-18 23:11:00 Author: Jayhawk_er Posts: 403 |
Thanks guys I'm not sure when I'll be releasing it. I have a 99% bug free portal gun working with velocity. I'm not sure if I should just wait until the move pack comes so I can use all the new tools. | 2011-06-18 23:20:00 Author: Unknown User |
Great tips, and amazing objects. Like yourself, I use holo in a similar way. Never taken it as far as you have though. I'm really looking forward to the move pack. I queued your level a while back, but am working on cleaning some messy logic before I get back to decorating. Your tips and the ones in this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j34tqqQfMYM&lc=OgiXN0uTbQa_eGRfmNbOfn065XlZPNiJ1gMuJ8mrynE&feature=inbox) tutorial, are going to help me get my objects even cooler Not sure if this a a standard bit of kit, but I have invisible light matter that I use. I made it, but can't re-create it so I'm not sure if it's rare. I like it more than dark matter, because even though you can't see either I like knowing that it's perfectly straight (weird, I know) | 2011-06-18 23:22:00 Author: Mr_Fusion Posts: 1799 |
Good stuff. Thanks. | 2011-06-19 00:14:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
Wow...once I get back to my PS3 I'm going to be messing with this stuff. Looks freaking awesome. | 2011-06-19 05:28:00 Author: anthman852 Posts: 66 |
I'll have to try a couple of these techniques out next time I play. You created some interesting results. | 2011-06-19 05:40:00 Author: Night Angel Posts: 1214 |
great stuff guy. that button system looks awesome as well as the other stuff. looking forward to this level. Aaaaannnnd, I got your camera tool and it's amazing. I think it will come in handy with some stuff I'm working on. | 2011-06-19 15:22:00 Author: biorogue Posts: 8424 |
Wow you really know how to use Decos in ways to get what you want! *mew | 2011-06-19 20:23:00 Author: Lord-Dreamerz Posts: 4261 |
http://db.tt/Zexnre5 ......(I'm speechless)...................... That's spectacular. Everything about this thread is incredibly useful for me. Thank you! | 2011-06-19 20:50:00 Author: SSTAGG1 Posts: 1136 |
Just picked up the camera, nice job there! Looking at the turrets, if you have not done so already you can make the gun panels of the one facing the camera a little sleeker by using thack material. | 2011-06-19 20:51:00 Author: croissantbuncake Posts: 572 |

Thanks. Yeah I'm using thack for the panels... it's the closest I could get with using material. I've been planning on going through the decorations to see if I can get something else to work. | 2011-06-20 00:19:00 Author: Unknown User |

So, you mean you won't release it until then? I'm not sure yet. I'll keep people updated if they want. | 2011-06-20 02:41:00 Author: Unknown User |
I'd just go ahead and release a version now, and then make another with Move integration. It looks like the best Portal remake I've seen so far, so I'm sure everyone here would love to be able to play it as soon as possible. | 2011-06-20 03:18:00 Author: SSTAGG1 Posts: 1136 |

Great tutorial! I am wondering where the stick-like decoration is from in your first pictures. | 2011-06-21 09:24:00 Author: Antikris Posts: 1340 |
Great tutorial! I am wondering where the stick-like decoration is from in your first pictures. Thats an Antenna from The Factory of A Better Tomorrow, its from Bang for Buck, and you win it for collecting all prizes. I'm wondering what you used to create the sentry guns. I'm having an insane amount of trouble recreating the back circuitry of my DeLorean. Would love any more information you have to offer with how to achieve those results. It looks almost perfect for a Mr. Fusion reactor. EDIT: I forgot to remember that you can sticker stuff from you goodies bag! I've sort of been going about this the wrong way; looking for the right colour bits not just the best shape! | 2011-07-03 09:01:00 Author: Mr_Fusion Posts: 1799 |
Mr_Fusion..... the object that I used for the main body of the turret... is... a pinball (I kinda cheated though). Everything else that I've shown in this tutorial is done without glitches except this part of my turret and the theck part of my doors. I try to stay "legit" with my creations, but there are somethings that you just can't find or create without cheating sometimes. I shrunk down the pinball until it became an oblonged sphere, (kinda like those levels with the re-sized beach-balls back in the day, how they never looked spherical) and then I used the twist glitch to rotate it on the x-axis. Here is a link on how to recreate this effect https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=53052-How-to-make-3d-Objects | 2011-07-03 14:37:00 Author: Unknown User |
wow I use this technique alot but never in this scale, this will be helpful, thanks you XD | 2011-07-03 16:14:00 Author: Arnald23 Posts: 1843 |

Hell, that's how I made mine. I remember using these deco tricks since way back in LBP1, I made a 3D cherry blossom tree using the sakura decoration, nice to see someone passing on the ways of the decorations. A single decoration can be more powerful than a Popit full of stickers! Now I sound like a motivational speaker, I'll stop now. | 2011-07-03 16:14:00 Author: JamesDNaux Posts: 757 |

I resized a pinball and stickered it green, and it looks exactly like a bit of the DeLorean I need for top down decorating! Still wasn't sure about how you got it upright, as I haven't really investigated that twist thing before. I don't think it's cheating it's all about skill, creativity and using your understanding of the game to create. Something you are very good at. I'll share my latest efforts shortly. I'm pretty excited with them, it seems that it's opened up so many more possibilities! | 2011-07-03 21:47:00 Author: Mr_Fusion Posts: 1799 |
Hey, question for you. I want a tiny rotating fan that faces sideways. I believe that you used to be able to accomplish this by putting decorations on a powerup or powerup remover, but it seems that you can no longer shrink a powerup to make it hard to see. Is there any other way that I could make this functioning fan that is facing to the side or is there no other way other than sticking decorations on powerups? | 2011-07-14 18:51:00 Author: Jgr9 Posts: 56 |

You could try using the Drill Object from The Incredibles Pack. | 2011-07-15 02:21:00 Author: RJA00000 Posts: 387 |
Hmm... Maybe... I haven't found a video of what the full drill looks like (only seen it at the end of the level). It might be difficult to put things on that drill at an angle kind of like the fan that I want while also mostly hiding the drill itself. I haven't seen the backside of it yet. is the speed tweakable? | 2011-07-15 04:47:00 Author: Jgr9 Posts: 56 |
IIRC, speed isn't tweakable. Just place the decoration on the base of the drill (sure, angle might be tough, but it wouldn't be much easier on a powerup). Oh, and it still spins when glued. | 2011-07-16 02:44:00 Author: RJA00000 Posts: 387 |
Using the insperation and ideas from this thread, I'd like to show my latest efforts in building with decorations. http://i8.lbp.me/img/ft/a88c0d0be654889c363e11036390f740431c7b8c.jpg I think it's looking pretty good, but am open to suggestions! | 2011-07-16 11:01:00 Author: Mr_Fusion Posts: 1799 |
I believe that you used to be able to accomplish this by putting decorations on a powerup or powerup remover, but it seems that you can no longer shrink a powerup to make it hard to see. You can use twist glitch to make power up smaller but they tend to twist in it. You could make them in lbp1 and import or if you don't have lbp1 I could do it if you'd first told me how small you want. There is also community levels that have pre-made versions. | 2011-07-16 12:51:00 Author: waD_Delma Posts: 282 |
One of my friends is a god at this technique and they scare me with what they make HOW DID YOU EVEN- but the only issue is that decorations don't display correctly sometimes, they seem to disappear and reappear strangely when half-obscured by physical objects. Hopefully it gets patched. | 2011-07-17 02:43:00 Author: Ayneh Posts: 2454 |
I like your paaaaaad Nice decorating tips. All of that portal stuff you made looks really awesome, and I also agree with the people that are saying that you should publish the lvl. Good lvls are few and far between in the community now...........or I just can't find them | 2011-07-17 18:30:00 Author: Amigps Posts: 564 |
The pictures do not load -_- | 2011-07-19 15:10:00 Author: zzmorg82 Posts: 948 |
Yeah, didn't load for me neither. But i read the text so thx anyway. | 2011-07-23 14:12:00 Author: TheGoldenFlash Posts: 209 |
All of Cloud87's photos seem to be gone! He seemed to be hosting them other than on LBP.me. Really wanted to see the pics again, it's not just easier to understand descriptions but his Portal creations are AMAZING. And without a level coming soon, it's the only taste we get of his incredible talent! | 2011-07-25 05:12:00 Author: Unknown User |
Sounds good bit i cant get your picture to load | 2011-07-27 18:23:00 Author: Megafig Posts: 52 |
