The Heist: Preparations

Archive: 10 posts

Hello again! I've finished work on the next part of my "The Heist" series, and wanted to share.

In this level, Jack must train for the big heist! I wanted to introduce a few of the most basic gameplay functions that the actual museum will have. Of course I plan for the museum to have much more than this, but I just wanted this to get people used to the basic concepts. So it's training for you and Jack!

Here are some photos of the level so you can get an idea of what it looks like:

I too, am also in! Based solely on your first part. This is very exciting to see where you are going to take this!

EDIT:
Just played it... wow. Awesome work yet again. This type of game design is rarely seen in LBP. You have built a very intelligent obstacle course that is achievable but challenging at the same time.

The actual look of the level is also fantastic. I'm sure that your pushing the thermo pretty hard even though the actual level is pretty short. Having said that... its a perfect length. I got to the end and instantly want to play more because the concept of the stage wasn't beaten to death. You introduce the mechanics to player bit by bit, and then throw it together... and that's it. Perfect!

Some little things to think about. These stages are able to be played in any order, but you don't seem to say that square is an interact button in this one, not until the bit about the doors. I'm guessing that as things progress it will be a little annoying to have to re-iterate all the mechanics, but you may want to think about a way to help new players enjoy the level enough to go back to the start and play from the beginning to get the full story.

Also I'd love to see the ability to activate a time trial in this. It may take away from the story you are creating, but if there was a sticker switch to activate it, it'd be a great little challenge!

Will be waiting patiently for the next instalment!

Oh yeah, I was thinking about that early on, but totally forgot! It would be helpful for new players to get a little tutorial at the beginning... but I tend to make my levels overheat before i'm done with them So I dunno if I could do much in the actual level. Though I could certainly make room in the third part.

Or should I just include (Square to interact with Objects. Triangle to talk to people.) in the description? Hm..

Anyway, thank you everybody who has played so far! I really love that people are enjoying my work
And thanks to some helpful reviews and comments, i've fixed several bugs already, like being able to get through the metal fence at the beginning.

Ummm...

How about something like when he's singing along it says on the bottom of the screen 'press triangle to speak. And then he says stop singing?

Or the very first part in the alley when Jack is on the ground it prompts you to press triangle and Henry then says 'Get up here, you may need to interact with that switch with square' You press it and it's broken... and then you just have to jump up the normal way you have it. You also have the computer and TV to try some quick prompts also.

I don't think you need to do much in the way of a detailed tutorial.

You could also just label Square and Triangle on the controloniator and they'll pop up on screen also.

played last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Like I said before, your attention to detail in the urban setting is outstanding. You have all these little things in the background that just pull it all together. NPC's in the background doing things and the driving sequence was pretty cool. I loved the perspective of looking into the van from the hood, you even had the steering wheel turning back and forth. Excellent job. Anxiously await the next chapter.2011-06-19 14:35:00

Positives:
+The intro with them driving was pretty good, I liked that alot
+The music in car was pretty smooth to
+Characters were well done for this type of level to
+The obstacles were pretty good/fun going through them

Negatives:
-In the training room, when you get to the switch that lifts up that crate somehow I got over the crate without having to pull that switch the 1st time but I tripped one of the wires so I had to restart. But its no big problem it only happen if someone get a super jump off soon as they hit the edge.
