Object randomly invisible in play mode! Argh!

Archive: 3 posts

I'm sure some info about this problem is out there, but my attempts to search found nothing. SO if anyone can point me to where the answer is, I'd be very grateful!

The problem is this: I've got a level I've been working on for a VERY long time, but I NEVER unpause it in create mode. I Always go to play mode to test it. Anyway, a large chunk of geometry that's been in the level since the beginning and that I haven't edited since it first went in, has suddenly started turning invisible in play mode. It still has collision, you just can't see it.

In create mode it looks totally normal. In play mode, it'll play normally for two or three play throughs, then it suddenly becomes invisible in the next playthrough and will stay that way for all subsequent play throughs until I exit LBP2 and reboot my PS3.

I'd have to do more testing to verify, but it also seemed like I could get it to become visible for a few plays without rebooting if I use the material changer to switch the material. But it still turns invisible after a couple of plays.

Is there a fix for this? Or at least an explanation of what caused it?

That is very odd. Have you tried deleting/replacing it, or splitting it into smaller pieces?2011-06-16 20:02:00

Thanks for the ideas Sstagg1

I tried deleting it and replacing it with a copy I made from a much, much older backup that isn't having any problems, but that didn't solve it. I could try breaking into smaller pieces, but it's really FAR from being the biggest piece in the level. But I'll try it anyway just in case some magic occurs.

I also have an idea how I can flatten the geometry and use it as a guide to recreate from scratch in the front view mode. (It's a vehicle level and the geometry in question is part of the terrain. It's been painstakingly tuned and adjusted to bounce the vehicle around just so, and I'd like to not lose the dozens of hours I spent getting it just right)

So far, my tests with changing the material seem to indicate that as long as I've changed the material, the problem doesn't happen. If I change it back, the problem returns. But I'm using the same material all over the level and nowhere else is showing this problem.

And the material in question is just a green floral sponge material, nothing special, no material tweaker applied or anything.

To be honest, my suspicion would be that there's simply too many things in the area and that bit of material isn't getting drawn. But I've actually removed a couple of things nearby before this problem started, and then there's the weird issue where the problem happens only after two or three replays and then becomes permanent unless I reboot, so it just doesn't make sense.

EDIT: Okay, slicing the geometry into three pieces seems to have "solved" the problem. I'm still concerned though because there are at least six or eight chunks that are far, FAR larger that the mystery piece. In fact, it sits on top of a piece that's more than twice as long as it is. My fear is that this is an indication of some insidious corruption of the data.
