Quick questions about level linking

Archive: 8 posts

Let me see if I understand this....
I've got a two part level. I want the level link at the end to lead to a level which is locked. The reason is that the level is very long so I want players to be able to stop playing and attempt part 2 at a later time if they wish. So I'll be leaving a key to part 2 at the end of the level along with the level link.

When publishing, I should publish part 2 first, then edit part 1 to have a level link and key to the newly published part 2, then finally publish part 1. Is that correct?

Also, the player controls a sackbot in my level. Sackbots can pick up keys and enter level links I hope?

Yes, you would publish part 2, and then publish part 1 with part 2's key.

And as for the Sackbot collecting keys, no. Sackbots can't simply walk through keys and pick them up like Proper Sackpeople. However, all is not lost. Keys can have inputs attached to them. So, try putting a Tag on your Sackbot, and a corresponding Tag Sensor, on the key, wired to the keys input, and it will appear as though the Sackbot collected the key.
In fact, you can even do the same with Prize Bubbles and whatnot.

Also, you may find it useful to control a sackbot using an invisible controlinator seat stuck to a 0% brightness holo block, following the bot. It is a very common way to keep the camera view focused on the player's bot without resorting to cameras. Now, since the player is actually on top of the bot, any price bubbles, player triggers, keys, camera ranges, etcetera that the bot runs into, the player moves into as well, picking them up or triggering them.

So, it is not always necessary to emulate player behavior on a bot. I'd say that should be your second choice; if you can use above method, do it.

Hmm, an invisible controllinator following the bot is exactly what I've been doing, but it hasn't seemed to work as far as picking up prize bubbles. It's possible I may have made the hologram thin in which case that might explain it.2011-06-17 14:56:00

I published my level and it turns out that sackbots cannot use level links. So I have to do the same sort of thing activating it with a sensor of some kind.2011-06-17 20:24:00

what ever you do, don't wire up the level link. forced level links frequently kick players.2011-06-18 05:09:00

Anyway I don't care any more. No one wants to try the level.
