Klonoa - The Most Beautiful Platformer of all time

Archive: 20 posts

Look, say what you will about the title being wrong. I'd imagine that almost anyone here would be up at arms if I told them that any platformers were better than LittleBigPlanet, and I post this thread knowing fully that I will be crucified for it. Still, despite what happens to me, I'm very confident in saying that there are 2 platforming games that will always be the best to me in terms of beauty, style, and creativity.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (Playstation 1), and...
Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil (Playstation 2)

I'd probably be correct in assuming that no one has ever heard of these games before, let alone actually played them. Well, that's really a shame, because they are simply amazing games that deserve to be played.

Both games were developed by Namco way back in the day, and while the Klonoa series is practically dead in America and probably even Europe, it's still got a little tiny bit of life left in Japan. The game is mostly underground, so there was very little to no advertising for it.

Anyways, I couldn't really describe it in detail since the game is pretty deep, but I can say that it implements a special type of graphic display know as 2.5D, where everything feels and plays like it's in 3D, but functions on a rotating 2D grid.

So, if anyone is at all interested, or has played it before, let me know. I'd love to find fans for these games. Also, if anyone wants info as to how to find these games (especially the first one since it's fairly rare and expensive for a PS1 game) let me know, I'll send you a PM.

Hey, I own it
It really is an awesome platformer. The PS1 design with the Huge eyes and collar is the best. It looked awesome, played awesome, and the soundtrack too was indeed awesome, especially the Windmill Village song
Balue's tower was the best bonus level ever.
Also it came out about last week in Japan as a visually (And game-play wise I suspect. Waggle controooolllsssss *Shakes fist*) updated remake. Hopefully coming to everyone elses' shores. I doubt it will be as good as the PS1 version t hough.

Speaking of old PS1 platformers, anybody try Tombi/Tomba? That too was amazing. The PS1 had some gems.

I'll have to find a way to play this game on my PSP as well. Eager to try this out.

I'm in a horrible naggy, correcty know-it-all sort of mood so buckle your seatbelts. Responses in blood red. :kz:

Wha? As far as I'm aware, Klonoa was relatviely popular.

Both games were developed by Namco way back in the day, and while the Klonoa series is practically dead in America and probably even Europe, it's still got a little tiny bit of life left in Japan. The game is mostly underground, so there was very little to no advertising for it.

Underground? You're mad, I tells ya. I saw articles and such left, right and center for the re-make when it was announced.

Anyways, I couldn't really describe it in detail since the game is pretty deep, but I can say that it implements a special type of graphic display know as 2.5D, where everything feels and plays like it's in 3D, but functions on a rotating 2D grid.

I love Klonoa, but again, you're mad! It's not particularly deep at all. It involved running left to right. Simple as can be!

So, if anyone is at all interested, or has played it before, let me know. I'd love to find fans for these games. Also, if anyone wants info as to how to find these games (especially the first one since it's fairly rare and expensive for a PS1 game) let me know, I'll send you a PM.

I was all ready to start hunting for the first game as my copy broke years and years ago and then they announced the re-make so I thought I'd wait it out. :3

Well then, I'll quote your quote in my quote, LOL!

Wha? As far as I'm aware, Klonoa was relatviely popular.

In the 19 years I've been alive, I have only ever met about 7-8 people who have ever heard of Klonoa, and only 2 who have played it. I'm sorry for going off my own personal data.

Underground? You're mad, I tells ya. I saw articles and such left, right and center for the re-make when it was announced.

Again, personal info. I hadn't even heard of the remake till you told me

I love Klonoa, but again, you're mad! It's not particularly deep at all. It involved running left to right. Simple as can be!

I meant the storyline, and when compared to many other Platforming games out there, yes it is friggin deep. Also, the simplicity is part of the reason why I like the game, anyone can pick up and play it, and any platformer of any skill level can easily enjoy it.

If you are bored, try hunting down the PS2 version, probably easier to find and equally as satisfying. Plus, the second bonus stage of that game was AMAZINGLY difficult.

In which case, true. Though I was just a little tyke when I played it so I can't remember it too well.

Was the very first PS2 game I rented and completed. All this talk about it makes me want to play it again so I think I may actually buy it.

I'm glad they didn't change the soundtrack in the Wii version, and they managed to keep the graphical style similar. Still won't get it though, I've the game on PS1 and PSP. Make another sequel already!

And 5 hearts? What?

Also I wasn't a fan of the GBA ones. The platformy one was more puzzle than anything, and far too easy at that. The RPG one also didn't take my fancy.

This was a great game. I loved the art style and the way they used camera angles to shift persepctive. I would love to see a sequel on the PS3 with a bit more depth, would be cool (but then again can any platformer compete with LBP?).2008-12-14 08:53:00

You're not the only one who wants to see a sequel, the entire fanbase has been begging Namco for this. It's hard to imagine why the original needs a remake (it's only been 11 years), but maybe it's the sign of something positive, maybe they are trying to recreate the fanbase for the production of a third game. Who knows.

As for competing with LBP, I still enjoy Klonoa just a tad more, but each one has it's pros and cons that tend to balance them out pretty equally.

Back in my youth, I had the demo for Klona on PS1. I wanted the full game but only had the cash for one, so I bought Final Fantasy VII. (A choice I still don't regret) Always presuming I'd pick up Klona. To be honest it completely slipped my mind until I saw the title, I didn't know they'd done a sequel. I may pop to eBay...2008-12-18 09:24:00

Im a big fan of Klonoa 2; definitely one of my favorite platformers ever. Everything about it was excellent.

I played it awhile back as a rental, and just last week or so I happened to randomly find it at a Gamestop..... boy was I surprised, it's not easy to get. Picked that up right away.....

I cant imagine why in the heck there havent been any more of them. There's no real reason for Namco NOT to do it; heck, there are references and cameos related to Klonoa that show up in other games (which seems to be something Namco likes to do, like the thing with the Galaxian flagship).

I've played a gazillion platformers over the years, and I jump at any new ones that come out..... but it's really, really hard to top Klonoa.

Honestly, I don't think the remake does the series justice.
Unless they move it back down to 3 hearts (back when people were actually good at platformers, 5 hearts is a load of bull for all the wimps that just can't take it), make it so you have to find 6 musicians per level instead of the now replaced ONE, and switch the voices from english/japanese to "klonoan" like the previous games, it won't feel like a true remake. We really need a sequel. Desperately. Like, I would eat a shoe for one.

You know, I need to bring up the whole load of crap that is 5 hearts and 1 Musician, and it isn't just Klonoa but a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT of games that have come out recently. Back in the SNES days, platforming games were hard, and that's what made them awesome, but around the time of the Playstation platformers really started aging and 2D wasn't popular anymore, everything had to be sparkly and the actual game component seemed optional. Klonoa was a game that managed to show how impressive 2D could be if worked on properly, and even though it still showed the problem of being a fairly easy game compared to the SNES days, it was challenging enough that it wouldn't keep us bored. So, what I'm complaining about with Klonoa especially, is that with today's generation of gamers all being fairly *****y about everything, let's take an easy game and make it EVEN EASIER!!! Jeez it's like people have forgotten how to make a true platforming game, one with a representable challenge. Everything has to be tutored and sugarcoated so kids won't complain about the difficulty to their mums, who would probably take up complaints with the company.

I'm sorry, but even LittleBigPlanet was easier than riding a bike, the Klonoa games were quite a bit tougher and those were still too easy. I miss the good old days when we had things like Ghosts N Goblins, Mario 3, Metroid, Megaman 2-3, Megaman X6, and many others.

Mega Man X6 was hard because the level design was horrible. Every other game fits though.2008-12-24 20:25:00
