My User Level/Author Reviews
Archive: 23 posts
Attached, I have put together a spreadsheet of all the levels I have either come accross on my own, have been recommended to by others, found by searching the web, or found by looking @ others hearted lists. While I have not played all the levels listed in the spreadsheet (see my comments included in the document), those I have listed have come highly recommended. As I do complete all the listed levels, I will update accordingly and remove any levels that I don't believe are worthy of having continued mention. I will do my best to keep the spreadsheet updated on a timely basis and certainly appreciate any feedback anyone has. If you would like to add your own analysis, or notify me of your analysis of a particular level, please feel free to do so. Maybe this could become a good central-point for our member community to reference and share (just a thought). Some specific authors I wanted to point out are Luckett_x, Jaeyden and SirenRose, as they are some of the most talented level creators out there. Their stuff is consistently good and quite challenging and they all have multiple levels for you all to enjoy (and more to come). I certainly hope this helps you all find and enjoy excellent user created levels. Please feel free to share your comments and to add me as a friend. Sincerely - badgerfan89 All, Here is my newest version (1.3 - dated 12/16/2008) that I provided further down in this thread. It doesn't seem like enough of you are making it to the end of the thread, so I would like to update the attachment here as well. I may continue this trend in the future to give you all one location to find the latest version. If you look in my last post in this thread, I have included some more detail pertaining to this version. As always, I am looking for ways to improve what I am offering here. Any and all feedback is much welcomed. Regards, badgerfan89 | 2008-12-10 16:54:00 Author: badgerfan89 Posts: 33 |
Well, as shameless as it sounds, could you add my level It's down there ▼ | 2008-12-10 17:01:00 Author: Shining Aquas Posts: 353 |
Shining - I will play Trial of Skill tonight, add to the list, and provide as detailed of an analysis as possible. L8r - BF89 | 2008-12-10 17:55:00 Author: badgerfan89 Posts: 33 |
You can always give ours a go as well if you'd like. This is a nice list you've got here. I like that people are doing stuff like this. it's wonderful for the community. I did a list like this too, but it's not nearly as detailed as yours. ^_^ http://www.kappacino.com/wordpress/?p=342 anyway, our levels are: Centralia A Ghost Story by Catiers (my husband) located near pennsylvania in north america The Fall of Winter by xkappax (me) located relatively in the same place. keep up the wonderful work. It's people like you that help dig through the mess that is cool levels to find the gems and it is well appreciated by the community. | 2008-12-10 18:00:00 Author: xkappax Posts: 2569 |
Thanks for the feedback xkappax! It is very much appreciated and helps me know that there is a market (and desire) in the LBP community for this short of list. I will certainly do my best to get to your identified levels (both in your post and in your wordpress doc) as soon as I can and get them added to the list (if they so warrant). I too work full-time (info gathered from your wordpress doc), have kids, and am generally busy with life outside of gaming. However, something about LBP has caught my attention and I try to get at least an hour a day (really night) finding and playing GREAT user created levels (I have already finished MM's included levels - not to 100% completion level though). My ultimate goal is to get a finely tuned list that provides all LBP Central members with a wonderful experience - separating the perfection from the fluff. It certainly will take a concerted effort to reach that goal, but I believe in doing a little bit consistently with the list each day, will result in it becoming a great tool for all to use. Again, thanks for the feedback. L8r - BF89 | 2008-12-10 18:57:00 Author: badgerfan89 Posts: 33 |
I'll be happy to throw more levels your way whenever I can. I want to help the people with good levels to shine through! | 2008-12-10 19:03:00 Author: xkappax Posts: 2569 |
I will play Trial of Skill tonight, add to the list, and provide as detailed of an analysis as possible. L8r - BF89 I appreciate it very much, it's been tough trying to spread the word about it (going for that ridiculous Create Trophy). Anyways, fairly good list so far. Um, let me see if I've got this right: "Later - Befatenine?" Wait what? | 2008-12-10 19:27:00 Author: Shining Aquas Posts: 353 |
BF89 is just short for badgerfan89 (or is it?). | 2008-12-10 19:50:00 Author: badgerfan89 Posts: 33 |
I think that the levels H.A.T.E, Out of Africa, Jail Break and Escape from Alcatraz should all be added. I also just published a level called Timmy's Dream I would like you to play, it's certainly worth your time. Out of curiosity do you pay much thought to dialog and story depth? | 2008-12-10 22:03:00 Author: Hexagohn Posts: 335 |
Actually, I just posted my second level showcase blog tonight. Maybe you will find it helpful in finding more levels. ^_^ http://www.kappacino.com/wordpress/?p=382 | 2008-12-11 02:40:00 Author: xkappax Posts: 2569 |
Nice list! I hope you keep it updated, it could prove very useful. By the way, Luckett_X is a member here, and visits from time to time. He promoted his Sackhouette levels here as well. | 2008-12-11 02:46:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
I would highly recommend Tree Fortress by Slap-me-do(he has a thread here somewhere). Also if you have time take a look at my level, I think it might be worthy of your list. Info in my sig. | 2008-12-11 03:12:00 Author: Walter-Kovacs Posts: 542 |
Hmmm... it seems as LBP grows, all sorts of different niche roles are appearing. There are people that make levels. There are people that make objects. There are people that film levels. There are people that give advice on how to make levels... It's only a natural progression for there to be people that review levels as well. It might be helpful if several people have a go at this. Unfortunately creating takes up so much time, or else I am sure there would be more people who would be focusing in this area. If it really expands though, maybe a seperate forum section could be made. But there certainly could be place for this that are having a break from / have grown tired of / are no good at create mode. Different opinions from different people would be very cool indeed. I must say that's a very detailed list you have. I haven't played any of the levels except a too short attempt at Sackhouette though. And now for a shameless plug, if you get a chance, try my level. | 2008-12-11 03:28:00 Author: Elbee23 Posts: 1280 |

Thanks all for the feedback and kind words. This is still certainly a work in progress. I have a lot of work to do to not only catch-up with playing and analyzing identified levels, but also improving my document (may need help with this in the future, if it gets to be too much for me to handle - strictly due to time constraints). I have added some improvements for this version (my top 10 user levels) and hope to continue to add improvements throughout the future. To note, changes with this version are identified in BLUE text. I will be adding a change log in the future (if only I had more time). My primary intention for doing this is giving members of this community a one-stop shop for finding great user created levels. I really want to focus primarily on those GREAT user created levels that are not "mainstream", but will occassionally include highly played levels when they are too good not to (e.g. Luckett_x's Sackouette levels). Hopefully you all find this useful and that it contributes towards your enjoyment of the game. Sincerely, badgerfan89 (feel free to add me as a friend if you like) P.S. I will be providing some detailed feedback for the Trial of Skill level created by Shining Aquas (was requested to do so). The information is forthcoming yet today. | 2008-12-11 21:13:00 Author: badgerfan89 Posts: 33 |
Wow, you really seem to like my levels. Thanks for the vote of confidence! Great idea compiling the list, but it seems finding levels even with direct level names is getting to be almost impossible, so really the way to go is using Hearted Lists in-game. If you heart the levels on that list or setup a dummy PSN account to do so, that will lead to people actually playing the levels rather than getting frustrated with search! | 2008-12-11 23:21:00 Author: Luckett_X Posts: 34 |
That's actually a brilliant idea Luckett. Setting up a dummy account with your reviewed levels hearted would be simply awesome for easy access. I think what your doing is a great idea badgerfan89. I absolutely LOVE statistics and reviews and the way your doing it is pretty much spot on. Now I wish I had a laptop or a printer so that I could play these levels without having to trudge across the house to the computer every time haha If you find the time I'd love for you to play both or one of my levels and give it a review. I don't expect anything but honesty so feel free to try em out Good or Evil?- A Knight's Tale Sin City (Final Version) Both can be found under my PSN: Neverynnal quite easily I think. Thanks :hero: | 2008-12-11 23:34:00 Author: Neverynnal Posts: 374 |
Thanks for the feeback all. I sense the interest and will keep on moving forward with updates and improvements. Again, maybe it will become a good central point for referencing the best user created hidden gems out there. Shining - I have provided my feedback regarding your Trial of Skill level under the levels Showcase thread. Let me know if I can be of more help (time permitting). Best of luck to you! Luckett_x - Great stuff! Really appreciate the time and effort that you're spending on your levels. I very much look forward to v3! Search certainly does suck, so I will investigate implementing your idea. The easier to find the good stuff, the better. Got to play a few levels before bed. Please review The Abandoned Coal Mine (you can review the second one if you want to, but only if you want to ). I know there will be some things in there that you will enjoy. I focused heavily on the lighting effects and theme so its kind of "artistic." the links are in my signature | 2008-12-12 20:08:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |
All, Thank you for your responses. In time, I will get to your levels (a bit overloaded at the moment). The latest version of my recommended list is attached with this message. I have made quite a few updates and think it provides even more value now. Again, changes are identified in BLUE text. Enjoy, and happy gaming. Later, badgerfan89 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sorry, formatting seems to be a mess in my newest version. Looked good on the computer I was doing it on, but now looks like a mess (on a different computer). I will make some corrections to clean up the formatting regardless of what computer the document is being viewed from. Later, badgerfan89 | 2008-12-12 21:13:00 Author: badgerfan89 Posts: 33 |
I like your top 10 list for the most part, anyway maybe you could give a very brief review type thing explaining what you liked about them? | 2008-12-15 02:59:00 Author: Hexagohn Posts: 335 |
Thanks for the feedback hexagohn. I did revist Clockworks Monkey Business and do admit it is not visually as strong as Out of Africa. However, I do believe it is more challenging (especially in the cogs section of the level). I may have it rated a bit high, and have lowered it to reflect my most recent feelings. I certainly praise Out of Africa for its custom feel, both in look and in the enemies that are presented. But I do feel that it is entirely too easy and too short. I really like the river section, which I think could be expanded on and made into a great future level. Also, while bosses are always welcome, to make the lion boss near the end so easy to kill, is a shame. I have played a fair number of levels that have bosses, and most of which are much more difficult to defeat. Regarding Timmy's Dream, here are some additional thoughts: Liked - length, challenge, variety Disliked - colors, story (just fair), some canned design elements (use of the elephant) What I meant about your being surprised, is the artistic and overall quality of the top 10 I have identified (when compared against your level). I really do believe you have a strong premise and that Timmy's dream has lots of potential, I just don't think it holds up when compared to the best levels out there. I am in no way trying to be disrespectful to you and your creation. Your effort and time spent to even create a level are very admirable (I know I don't have the time...and likely not the patience either). I am just trying to be an objective party and comparing what I have seen to what you offer. It seems to me that you really want to improve and the LBP community will be that much better for it. Again, thanks for your feedback and for creating positive inputs into the online community. Over time, we'll all be better for it. Sincerely, badgerfan89 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Attached, you will find my latest compilation. The formatting issues have been resolved and it is much easier to read. I have now separated onto two different worksheets those levels I have reviewed and those that I need to review (identified as on deck). I believe it was too confusing before and this change should clear things up. Additionally, I previously was including levels on my list that I extracted from conducting searches in forums/blogs/etc. After spending some time over the weekend, I found many listed levels clearly had no place on a quality list, so they have been removed. Also, I am now focusing on only levels I have rated 4.00 or higher. While there are some solid levels below that threshold, I really want to identify the best of the best. I am open to any and all suggestions. I am considering starting a blog and trying to format this list in some other way. Any suggestions regarding going in that direction would be much appreciated. I also will attempt to shore up my analysis/reviews to be a bit more value added and specific. This is still a work in progress and should improve over time. I truly believe that my identified top 10 and best found levels are all very very solid user levels. Additionally, I have done some initial vetting of those levels that I have included in the "on deck" worksheet to better filter out the fluff. I am hoping that anything I have identified in this entire spreadsheet is very much worth your time in taking a look at and adds to your enjoyment of LBP. I want to make this list (and any future improvements) relevant to the community. This is just a start - I know it can become something better (maybe include pictures/videos in the future - I would certainly need help/suggestions here). Again, any and all feedback is welcomed and appreciated. I certainly hope you all find some value from this list and that it helps you enjoy some of the greatest user created levels out there. Sincerely, badgerfan89 P.S. There is a new level on the top 10 list (God of War: Trials of the Gods by RyanardoDaVinci). It is an EXCELLENT single-player only experience - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! | 2008-12-16 15:20:00 Author: badgerfan89 Posts: 33 |
