Gaia - Part 1

Archive: 23 posts

After creating many mini-games and tech demos I've decided to start creating proper levels. This is part one of a series. However, I may make this part 2 and create an introduction level.

The level is called Gaia which is the name of the Greek God "Earth Mother". The series of levels will have an environmental theme/message.

I've tried to add a few different game-play features that I like to see while playing community levels. There's some basic platform jumping, puzzle solving, cinematic sequences, and a story.

A lot of friends have previously commented that aesthetics are not my strong point, so I've taken extra time and effort on the visual aspects of the level.

I've tried to make the level as unique as possible, the final part (avoiding spoiler) has something I haven't seen before in any levels and will play a major role in Part 2.

Any constructive feedback or criticism will be gratefully received.

I like what you've done with the 3D layers. As for aesthetics this actually looks really good and I'll add it to my que soon. Although the 5th image, I'm not quite sure how a clay material fits with stone one in your theme. But that's probabaly because I haven't played it yet, so no biggy.2011-06-15 10:23:00

Awesome start to your level. It looed like a great use of extra layers there, but I'm not 100% sure. I loved the dialogue and camera switches and scale of characters. The beetle grapple was fun and I died several times before I got that right. Great use of a non-rock material as rock! I especially liked the ascent where you grabbed the switches and it opened up jump pads.My kids and I loved the trip down the hill inside the rock circle..nicely done. Great use of the "extra layers" in the "temple" and that rock beast was an excellent surprise!!! Will we ever get to battle him or will he help us battle something bigger and badder in part 2?

All around this was one of my more recent favorites to play and I'm waiting for part 2. I'm not yet familiar with your other levels, but it appears to me that you did a great job on all accounts here. I gave this level a heart.
<3

Some places for improvement might be some more "extra layer" tweaking in other parts of the level and maybe displaying the "part two coming soon" in a different fashion so it didn't block the scoreboard so much. Also a few section could be made to look more seamless by hiding them with less stickers or objects and foreground material.

When you get time please give my Ka-Boom Basketball, Afro Troll or Golden Acorn a shot in my sig. Thanks!

Brilliant level! The best thing about the level was the fact that it was 100% original in theme and visual presentation. When so many generic bubble popping bounce pad generic mm story themed level are being published it comes as a breath of fresh air to play something unique like this. Fantatsic visuals and clever varied gameplay combined with a convincing story. Really nice pace and flow to the level, my favourite part being the rock creature towards the end.
Only suggestion would be to combine the final mouth on gaia with a one shot cut scene cam to stop folks accidently running past to the scorebaord.
Folks really should play this level, highly recommended and hearted!

Hey,

Excellent level you got there! I really had fun. The design is very original, I (personally) never saw a cave made out of that material before. The way the Guardian breaks down and then gathers again really impressed me, great job!

I really loved this level.
The story was good and the visuals worked well for the theme.
I liked the look of the rocks and caves. It's good to see that you haven't just used a simple rock material and have built the rocks together yourself.
The platforming was fun and there were a few bits in there that I haven't seen before.
I did have a little bit of a problem when the guardian formed from the rocks though.
I walked out of the temple and across the bridge and then the cinematic started and the guardian walked into me killing me.
Maybe you could maybe have it activated when the player is in a safer position.

Overall a brilliant level well worth a yay and a <3

If you get time maybe you could check out my Puzzle level (details in sig)
Thanks.

First off i'm amazed that when i first queued this it only had 5 plays now fifty i don't know how you managed it but i think its a great job.

What an amazing platformer this level waas worth a play. The look and detail of the level is great i loved the rocky cave with its pebble stone look and the extra detail of the falling rocks here and there.
My favourite part of this level was riding inside the rolling rock until it smashed at the end. The rock bridge and the temple were also very impressive as well as the rock monster. Although there is a material tweeker that needs to be set to invisible you can see it on the picture i saved in the level. Its right after the rock monster chases you over the green acid gooy stuff.
I really liked the beatles you hae to grapple on i thought that was a great idea and also the spiked roots after that part.

This level is a must play for anyone who enjoys a decent platforming experience.

This level needs more plays!!! You had me hooked from the beginning with the butterflies forming the title. I mean come on who does that!?? I loved the originality all around, in the theme, plot, visuals, and gameplay. You can tell the time you put into making the level aesthetically pleasing. I thought the visuals were done very well with lots of detailing. I especially loved the guardian how he would come apart then reassemble into a different shape. I've never seen that concept created in LBP before! The one and only thing i noticed that i wasn't crazy about was the crystal decorations on the walls that the guardian would destroy. They didn't seem to flow with the rest of the scenery to me. Im looking forward to the continuation of the story in part 2 =]
A well deserved <3 and yay from me

the beginning sequence with gaia was really well done and original.
the gameplay flowed well though the bug ride was a little tricky.
the protector chase scene with the transforming was definitely something i hadnt seen before and left me with a " how the heck did you do that" expression.

This level looks fantastic and has excellent gameplay.

VISUALS:
The level design looks brilliant. It was well done with the rock materials and layer glitch. The Gaia character is greatly animated, and the giant Mother Earth sackbot is well made. I did see a visible material tweaker tool on the dropped rock. Maybe you'll easily find it on create mode when you switch the preview on. You also need to make your own sticker for the level icon, but not a complaint.

SOUND:
Great music choices and awesome sound effects.

GAMEPLAY:
The platforming is great, and the grappling hook usage is well done. Some objects could still need the material tweaker tools with grabbable off though.

OVERALL:
It is a visual masterpiece with excellent gameplay. A yay, heart, and positive review.

Visually, the level was a treat. The title in butterflies at the beginning was gorgeous, and the entrance of the goddess was great. I definitely enjoyed some of the details, like the beetle and the worms. The colors and materials really came together well to create the earthy theme. I really liked that there was a variety of things to do in the level rather than just running and jumping. The level easily keeps interest through to the end. The Guardian is definitely the greatest thing about this level; I have yet to see a creature like that anywhere in LBP. Excellent work, and I can't wait for the next part.2011-06-17 06:27:00

Wow I must say that I was pretty impressed. There are some really cool platforming mechanics at work here and the Guardian is just sick!! Pleasantly surprised and eagerly awaiting part 2. The only critique I can offer is that maybe some more stickering would really give the visuals some extra pop. But that is really minor. If you could please check out my new levels Act 2-1: Groves of Gadaron and Act 2-3: Pyre of Crisis and leave some feedback that would be great. Thanks.2011-06-18 00:41:00

Thanks for all your feedback, it has been very valuable. I've addressed most of the criticism that has been left and added a few extra tweaks to finish off the bits that I personally wasn't too happy with.

I've queued up your levels and will start playing and leaving feedback tomorrow.

All the positive feedback this level has received has me keen to get working on the next installment.

Will we ever get to battle him or will he help us battle something bigger and badder in part 2?

You will get to control the Guardian, and I have plans for a few extra surprises.

I played this a little bit ago and was absolutely floored. It's such a visually stunning level and I loved all the platforming mechanics. There are several clever, unique devices throughout the level that left me smiling. I love levels like this! The beginning title sequence was cool how the leaves came together to form the title. Brilliant! The Guardian was really, really impressive. It moved so fluidly and was genius how it would change shapes. This is truly a masterpiece and deserves tons of plays. Thank-you for sharing it with us.2011-06-19 01:05:00

Well, I've already queued and I will play and review either way, but if you are willing to accept F4F over LBP2 rather than through the forum, I'd appreciate feedback on my level Silence in the Library (http://lbp.me/v/1p8d0j).2011-06-19 21:07:00

Positives:
+The intro was really good
+Obstacles were well done
+The music fit the level pretty good
+Liked the theme of the level
+Using the bugs to take you across was pretty good idea for a level like this
+The rock ride was well did
+The effects of the rocks falling from each explosion was pretty good
+I like how the rock thing kept transforming that was pretty unique how the rocks came together like that

Negatives:
-The rock monster thing got stuck at the last part so he couldn't get through the last part causing me to get stuck.

This is an awesome level!

Great visuals overall, with some real standout sections (the temple is beautiful), enjoyable solid gameplay, innovative end of level monster, and an opening scene that really pulls you in.

My only issue is I also got stuck with the rock monster, think I went too far ahead and pulled the switch too soon maybe? But meant i couldn't finish.
But its so good it's a nice excuse to replay!
