Just wanted to ask a few things

Archive: 6 posts

I've fallen in love with create mode, but there are a few things that I would like to get out there for a little help. Already asked one of the questions, but I couldn't be bothered with just bumping it. xD

First and foremost, are there any tutorials out there about the basic design of the level. Like from start to finish? Just so I can get a picture of how it's supposed to work and gain ideas on how to make the spawn/start of the level decently. I just can't seem to get it right.

Number two: Should I use all three layers separately? Like instead of using all three with one material, use just one layer with the material and move to the next layer and so forth. I read somewhere that making the skeleton of the level all one piece is a bad idea and the more I think about it, the more I agree.

Number three: I'm making a lovey dovey level for my girlfriend and I was wondering if someone could give me suggestions on how to do it. I have ideas of my own and all that good stuff, just want some more to get me started.

Number four: While I'm on the subject, I want to make a scrolling LED type thing that says "I love you!" and I was wondering if there are any tutorials on how to create on of those.

Number five: Is there any place I could design a level outside of the game? I know there used to be a blueprint type thing awhile ago, but I can't seem to find it.

I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go on, so instead of creating an entire new thread, I'll just bump this one with them. Thank you in advanced for any help I get and for taking the time to read and reply.

Not sure of any LBP '101' tutorials but I tend to work backwards. It's easier to move the start entrance back through a level and often the end of a level is where most thermo is needed and you don't want to run out on the boss or whatever. Maybe it's just my weird head. Some people like to make all the bits of a level separately.

It's harder to split the layers up once you have started to stick loads of things to them so I'd agree that you should at least start off with building the skeleton of your level with 3 separate layers. You can always stick them together later. The only issue with this is that you'll need to test if Sackboy can ever drop out of the level as this is easier when working with separate layers. Oh, and don't forget the inbetween layers though.

There is a Valentine's pack. Enough said. Some cute acting with Sackbots? Maybe play to her likes a bit.

Don't quite understand. Do you mean are there any PC tools? If so, not really. Or do you mean designing with pen and paper? If so, I'd go for graph paper or some hexagon paper if you can get your hands on it.

Happy creating!

For number 4, the fastest way possible is the LBP1 way, which is: Make lights (preferrably 10x10) and hook up tag sensors (also in a 10x10 arrangement) to them. Make a board that passes by via a piston and make tags on it in the shape of "I love you". Make sure the piston is set to flipper motion if you want it to repeat.2011-06-14 19:51:00

Both of you helped me, thank you.

I have run into a tiny problem though. It seems I've broken the games cameras.
I want the movie camera fixed on a certain spot and whenever I go into play mode to test it, the camera is looking at the ground somewhere away from where i actually had it. The game camera does the same thing. Even the music I have doesn't play whenever I try to play the level. I've got a few hologram objects placed in one spot so maybe that's it, but I don't know why that would be the cause of it. Anyone know how to fix this?

Hmm, that's odd. Have you tried turning off the follow option of the camera (forget what it's called, should be a percentage). Is the camera area correct? Try making a new one and test that.

1) Just play random levels. There are so many ways to make a level. Try to avoid simple flat spaces. Really anything goes.
2) Yes, for reasons explained before, but if you know what you're doing beforehand, this might not be necessary.
3) Collecting hearts, a love meter/challenge that no matter how well you do always says "You're Perfect", a 'surprise' level (she doesn't realize it's all made for you until she finds a gift of your love, and then hearts and ribbons fly everywhere)....???? I dunno.
4) For scrolling words, you could use hologram material or neon. If you're any good with the logic tools, you could easily setup something to either emit them in a scrolling fashion across the screen, or just have them bounce back and forth, among other things.
5) Pencil and paper. I use it to order my thoughts on designs. Very useful.

Also, there's a decoration with an animated heart (it might even say I love you on the screen, I forget). Might want to use that?

Everything I have for the camera problem is correct. I tested it and everything was working perfectly, but after I added more hologram stuff it crapped out on me. I've tried redoing it and everything, but it's just not working.

And as for her level, the idea with the "You're perfect" thing is an excellent idea, I give you props for that.
What I have right now is a bunch of our memories/things we've said in the past in one little area(all made out of holograms) and I love you in the middle of all of them. Along with raining hearts; well not quite that yet, but that's what I tested the movie camera with.
