Lookin' for a little help here.

Not entirely sure if this is the right place to post this, but hey; it's worth a shot.
Anyway, I've been telling my girlfriend that I'd make her a level for almost a year now, back when LBP2 was just an idea. I've done my fair share of trying to make something, but I don't know; I'm starting to think I don't have the creativity for it. I have a ton of ideas; such as, hiding hearts throughout the level for her to find, each telling her a reason why I love her. Cute little ideas like that. But my problem is, I can't think of a general design for the level. I've made one that was flat and just had little platforms that she would walk up on, I've had them with elevators and floating things. But after I get so far, I think too much and end up scraping the entire project. I have trouble with it all, from the start of the level to the finish, heck now that I think about it, I've never actually FINISHED a level that she could play.

What I'm lookin' for here is a little advice to get me started, such as tricks to the beginning of the level and the general design of it. Something that would look eye popping to her and all that good stuff. I have all the information I need to make it something she'll enjoy playing, just don't have the creativity to come up with the surfaces and design of the level. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Before I start I always research what is already out there. For example if I'm making a dungeon level I search for the word 'dungeon' on lbp.me and play them. This usually gets me going. I then draw out my ideas and choose at least 3 main materials that I will stick with and go from there to come up with a theme. It's been months and I'm still working on mine and I've scrapped two levels I was working on in between. It's all part of the creative process and involves a lot of trial and error. Many times I have gone back to areas to redo them. Even deleting sections to do again. I'm yet to publish a level so I've been learning on the way.

Once you're happy with your levels layout and gameplay flow you can then start decorating and styling it up. At the start of mine I have had at least 3 diferent styles of decorations/stickers placed to test them out in small section before I'm finally happy with which one to go with. I'm slowly adding it through my level. Mine is in two parts so once I'm happy with them both I will then move on to polishing it, adding all the small things to finish them off such as cut scenes, sound and details. I leave these to the mid/end so that I can build rather then spending a load of time on sound or cut scenes only to find that I have to delete that section, redo something or totally redesign it.
Get all the basic in before the finer details.

That's how Im currently working and everyone is different. Hope that helps.

UPDATE: I also google a load of pictures around my theme to get ideas going.

That's definitely a good idea, but I dunno. Seems like it's a long process for something that may only be played a few time. Remember, I'm making this for my girlfriend; not the entire LBP population. Although, I will use the advice you gave me when I do decide to make a level for publishing. Thank you.2011-06-11 02:57:00

If I don't have a specific design in mind, I make it as I go. I don't start out with a goal, I just begin, then I make the next step, then the next step, until I'm happy with the amount of content I have created. As I create, I find myself automatically creating the style for the whole level, and it just goes from there. I usually just play other (good) levels to get my creative juices flowing as well. I don't ever actually plan anything out on paper though.

Probably the biggest part though, is just being happy with what you've made. Don't needlessly yoke yourself with the burden of trying to equal the greats.
