The "What?" reflex? O.o
Archive: 27 posts
What I've noticed is that sometimes even though I know exactly what a person says, I still say what. Some of my friends do it too, but what I want to know is if it's only in my general area (or the U.S.) that people do this? Is this because of the culture we/I grew in or what?? I do something like that, but is even worse; I reflexively ignore peoples voices if I'm doing something else even if I can hear them just fine, so people usually have to call my name or something multiple times before I start to actually listen to them, and I'm pretty sure my friends are similar. | 2011-06-10 00:33:00 Author: Stoicrow Posts: 276 |
Haha, I've caught myself doing this a few times. I know lots of people that do it So it's not just where you are, what I'd like to know though, is whether there's an equivalent for other languages? I also do the opposite of this too, which can cause problems sometimes. Someone will be talking to me and I'll respond but I'm only listening and responding subconsciously, so I end up not actually remembering what I or the person talking to me said | 2011-06-10 00:48:00 Author: SR20DETDOG Posts: 2431 |
It's a reaction to surprise. | 2011-06-10 00:52:00 Author: JspOt Posts: 3607 |
It's a reaction to surprise. I think he's talking more along the lines of being distracted, but you know that they said. Ex: You: *Day dreaming but listening.* Other Guy: "Dude, did you hear about that stuff from E3?" You: "What?" | 2011-06-10 01:16:00 Author: CyberSora Posts: 5551 |
Actually it's along the lines of.... Other Person: Blah blah blah You:*Listening AND remembering*What? Oh, blah blah blah blah @JspOt How is it a reaction to a surprise? I don't say WHAT?!?! When I get scared ">.> | 2011-06-10 01:53:00 Author: Amigps Posts: 564 |
I think the reason we do it, or why I do it, is because we don't know what to say. We want time to think about a good comeback or a very intelligent response. I think it is a reflex, one that I use a lot, that makes me think I am giving a good response. For example: Example 1 - Person A: So who do you think will win the NBA finals? Person B: Umm... Uh... Well... the Mavs*. Example 2 - Person A: So who do you think will win the NBA finals? Person B: What??? Person A: Who do you think will win the NBA finals? Person B: The Mavs*. Did you see how well they played? See the second example is a more intelligent response. The "What" reflex I think just gives us time to process the information. *I am not responsible for the outrage and arguments discussing the view on the NBA finals. | 2011-06-10 02:55:00 Author: Klak_334 Posts: 59 |
yeah i know what you mean, sort of like: My Friend: Hey did you see that movie last night? Me:What? Oh yeah it was awesome! its not a WHAT?? more like my brain reacting so i have more time to think of an answer , or something | 2011-06-10 02:58:00 Author: Skalio- Posts: 920 |

Oh yeah it was awesome! its not a WHAT?? more like my brain reacting so i have more time to think of an answer , or something Exactly!! You're probably right, sounds right anyway. So I wonder if this, like SRT2ODETDOG said, has an equivalent in other cultures/countries. Or did someone already reply that's from another country? Sometimes I miss the first half of the question, so I say "What?" and then as soon as they get halfway through what they said I interrupt them with an answer. | 2011-06-10 03:22:00 Author: midnight_heist Posts: 2513 |
Everyone does it in some form or another down the line and I probably wouldn't worry too much about it so long as you do it out of shock or indignation rather then cluelessness. If you do it out of the latter enough you just come off as silly: (Fast forward to 2:45, or just watch the whole thing; it's one of my favorite episodes) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZWhiLc6HsA&feature=related | 2011-06-10 03:24:00 Author: Dapiek Absaroka Posts: 512 |
Lol, it's just a reaction to complete surprise I was talking to a friend on the phone awhile back ago, something big happened, and I was like "WHAT!?" Lol, it's my common reaction to surprise Also, I always let someone half way through a conversation, when I'm really busy with the Lap-Top, and half way through, I interrupt them with "What? Huh"? That's one of the annoying things I do in life | 2011-06-10 07:39:00 Author: Unknown User |
Yeah I do it a lot. Sometimes to annoy my friends and others in surprise. When im distracted I ussully just do something like "Yep, oh right, cool, no, sometimes" and it wont make sense. | 2011-06-10 08:02:00 Author: craigmond Posts: 2426 |
Haa I usually do it when I'm concentrating on something else to much, I know full well what the person has said so I say "what?", but by the time I've said it, I've realised what they said originally so I just answer them anyway haha. | 2011-06-10 15:34:00 Author: dbibby88 Posts: 378 |
I do this... And to those that don't and have no clue what we are on about, we mean 'what' as in 'pardon'. Person A: Do you like pizza? Person B: Pardon? Oh yeah I love pizza. Made it more clear. | 2011-06-10 16:56:00 Author: Plasmavore Posts: 1913 |
I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this. Just found a facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Saying-what-even-though-you-heard-the-person-clearly/185650223195) for it. | 2011-06-10 18:08:00 Author: Rhys125 Posts: 841 |

Hi ! I speaks french and so you know, this happens also in french In my case, I hear the sounds but my brain need more time to place the sounds into words SO by the time I put the pieces together, the person begin the repeat the sentence but I'm already answering it. | 2011-06-14 14:25:00 Author: Unknown User |
Finland, happens here too. I also do this: I do something like that, but is even worse; I reflexively ignore peoples voices if I'm doing something else even if I can hear them just fine, so people usually have to call my name or something multiple times before I start to actually listen to them, and I'm pretty sure my friends are similar. Not unusual. | 2011-06-14 15:40:00 Author: TNSv Posts: 302 |
Happens pretty often, most of the time I actually hear what the other person said and I respond just as they are about to repeat what they just said. I'm also surprised no one posted this yet... http://sharkoffs.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Jules-Pulp-Fiction-Say-what-one-more-time-I-DARE-YOU-I-DOUBLE-DARE-YOU.jpg | 2011-06-14 16:05:00 Author: napero7 Posts: 1653 |
I must have said "WHAT!" about 15 times while watching the Skyrim game-play demos. For me at least it was an expression of excitement and disbelief | 2011-06-15 08:07:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
OMG.. Don't you think that this is really tough to accept. | 2011-06-15 10:19:00 Author: Unknown User |
