What would you buy?

Archive: 47 posts

So, I've got some gift cards to Best Buy (~$53 and change, old card still has a balance) and they've nearly melted through my wallet at this point.

Problem is, I have tons of games I'd like to get, and I have no idea which game(s) to put on priority. Add to this that I am forced into whatever prices Best Buy is currently offering, which may or may not be ideal for a purchase (i.e. may save up to $20 at times going to Amazon, etc.)

So, I've decided to ask you guys and gals... what would you get off my wishlist (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/games.php?do=wishlist&u=255670)?

Here's the options I've considered:

Two or more Greatest Hits/Older Games

Uncharted / Uncharted 2 (Waiting until the combo pack comes out)
God of War Collection / God of War III
Assassin's Creed / Assassin's Creed II
Misc.

Street Fighter IV
Final Fantasy XIII
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City

One new game

Call of Duty: Black OPS
Mass Effect 2
L.A. Noire
Portal 2
Crysis 2

Save for the Holiday Season (not sure my willpower is strong enough) and get...

Battlefield 3
Call of Duty: MW3
Uncharted 3
???

What do you guys think?

Bang for Buck Wise, I would say get Assasins Creed II & Uncharted II ;
Both are high quality AAA+ titles - and nicely cheap aswell.

You probably should play Uncharted before Uncharted 2 and Assassin's Creed before Assassin's Creed 2. But yeah, from the older games list, the ones Macnme mentioned are the best.2011-06-09 16:50:00

Out of curiosity, which is the better series? I'm a bit partial to both styles of gameplay (i.e. Lara Croft style shooter/platform/puzzler vs. sneaky-stabby-stealthy-historical piece) so the chance to get both games in one series is probably where I'd lean...

There's an uncharted 1/2 double pack coming that may or may not be cheaper than the current seperate prices.

The uncharted series has some sneaky gameplay in it as well, probably not as sneaky, but it's got it.
Historical wise, the uncharted series has plenty of as well.

I would definitely get Assassins Creed 2 and Uncharted 2, don't buy 2 in the same series because it's more risky that you'll get bored of them quicker and Uncharted 1 and Assassins Creed 1 are both good games but their sequels are so much better. 2011-06-09 22:45:00

Good catch! I think that puts off Uncharted for the time being. Speculation puts the dual pack at $40, which I can afford much easier than say, a new game.

Played and (nearly) beat the original on PS2, big fan of the series in general, and I know I'm in for some great gameplay if I get the collection... it'll be great to see it all rendered in HD again, too.

Tough choices!

I found mass Effect 2 very addictive.
And they include most the DLC (all the extra missions but one).

But I have to say that I have not played all of those games.
(Really want to check out Portal 2 and LA Noir)

The Uncharted 1/2 Double Pack or Portal 2, no questions asked.

Both have amazing sotrylines, epic gameplay, and cool atmostpheres.
And if you have a spare $30.00, I highly reccommend getting The Sly Collection; A remastered collection of the 3 classic PS2 games. Theres some amazing gameplay in here, and it really set the standards for the company who made the awesome Infamous games.
I hope this helps!

Yeah, these are all great recommendations... I'm seriously considering pre-ordering BF3 at this point, as I've got my Welcome Back package with Infamous installed on my HD. That, and I still have yet to beat Red Dead Redemption and GTAIV (I know, right?). In addition to pre-ordering the game, which I've never done before, I'll have the Back to Karkand map pack DLC and be able to start getting my butt blown to bits on Day 1.

The Uncharted double pack will definately be on my "to purchase" list, and Assassin's Creed 1/2 are both on the Greatest Hits list, thus ensuring they'll be available on store shelves for quite some time. Same thing with the Portal 2, God of War collection and God of War III. I'll be able to pick all of those titles up for $30 when I have the cash.

LA Noire and Mass Effect 2 are my "iffy" choices as well, as I'm fairly confident they'll also get the Greatest Hits treatment and I'll be able to buy both at a significantly lower cost in the future...

Ah, choices.

So, I think I have it narrowed down to two choices right now.

1) Pre-order BF3
2) Wait for a really good deal and pick up one of the bundled titles or several Greatest Hits

I also think I'd be choosing the Uncharted series over the AC series, but that's just me. (The story just seems more appealing to me.)

I would disregard Assassins Creed 1 to be honest - I didn't enjoy that game at all... it had the potential to be a good game but didn't really pull it off. It wasn't until Assassins Creed II that the potential was fulfilled. & You don't really miss anything out of the story either as the sequel is set in a different time period with a different main character (discounting the Virtual Reality Story Arch)... you are probably less likely to enjoy Assassins Creed II if you play the first game first.2011-06-13 13:11:00

Castlevania Lords Of Shadow is incredible and Mass Effect 2 is even better.
Best 2 games I've played in the last year.

And you have to get Uncharted 1 and 2 for sure

Well, IMO, I'd say Call of Duty Black Ops. And save for Battlefield 3 because it looks really good
Battlefield 3 trailer (http://www.youtube.com/user/Battlefield?v=aPu7-LtLKmU&feature=pyv&ad=12531837580&kw=battlefield3)

And even though it's not on the list (That's why I picked the 2 above incase you didn't want/like this) I'd really recommend Skyrim (http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Skyrim_Wiki), it looks really good You can see an E3 Gameplay Trailer here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCdiNaF13Ug).

Skyrim is on the list, but I'm not buying it on day 1 (there's no incentive to, to be honest) and if I get BlackOps there's only about 4 months left until everyone moves to the MW3... I should probably remove that one from the list, to be fair. It'd be MW3 or BF3, not both.

And I'd love to get Oblivion except it's not in stores, and only available on Amazon and a select few online retailers. There's a 5 year anniversary edition that will retail for $30 that I might get. I'd like to immerse myself in the world before playing Skyrim, as I'd love to start getting into a series like that.

Good call. Also, now these days, it's always good to wait until a patch arrives to get a newly released game, especially if that game's by a developer from Bethesda.

Some one mentioned the Sly Collection, and i have to go with them on this.

I just got it a few days ago, but i'm loving even the first one... which is said to be the most lack-luster! i'll say if you like InFamous you will like Sly... and the best part? each game is great... and they all have different gameplay styles! 1 is platforming with sneaking, some hub world. 2 is open-world with 7 different areas that are HUGE, and a very lengthy title. and sly 3... well, i haven't got their yet, hell only reason i know 2 is because i played it on my old BC PS3. From what i have heard though, 3 is more of a beat-em up/adventure game

so yah, 3 great games, $30, buy it.

Also they're a developer that likes to release a version of the game with added DLC a year or so after the original release which is great if you can wait that long.

Yeah, I played the first one on PS2 about 6 or 7 years ago and liked it. It's a bit too "toony" for me nowadays, but it's definitely got great gameplay elements. I've evolved more mature tastes as of late, but it's not like I need blood and curse words to get me to buy something. LBP and Katamari are the only two games designed for a younger audience that I'd even consider purchasing, and even with Katamari it'd probably only be for the music.

Yeah, I don't mind paying for DLC, but I probably won't sit long on this game. I need a good epic RPG to get into after Squeenix screwed up with the last installment of FF.

The awesome thing about the Elder Scrolls Games is that each game is made from the ground up as a "new" game. While the lore of Tamriel (the Elder Scroll Universe) remains the same (ie; what races populate the world, and what continents/regions those races come from) - each game is set in a different time period and a different region of Tamriel... so there's no need to play through any previous titles.

I think Oblivion is looking a bit dated now, as it was a release title for the 360 - but it's still far and away one of the best RPGs out there. I must've sunk a good 300+ hours into Oblivion... and 500+ hours into Morrowind.

It's a double edged sword - to play or not to play.
If you play Oblivion, then alot of what makes the Eldar Scrolls such great games (the massive free roaming environments, the crazy amount of detail and history, the excellent character creation/customization) will seem like old hat... so it would probably make Skyrim seem a little less impressive than if you were being introduced to the series from that point.

But then, Skyrim is going to make the previous titles look rubbish by comparison... so if you don;t play it before Skyrim, then you probably never will.

Personally - having played Oblivion and Morrwind to death - I would say start fresh with Skyrim and you will be absolutely blown away. (I'm expecting to be dissapointed with alot of stuff in Skyrim, just as I was dissapointed from the jump from Morrowind to Oblivion... because I had something to compare Oblivion to, it had less of an impact... where as if I had never heard of Morrowind and started with Oblivion, I'm sure I would have thought it was the greatest game ever)

Great! How are you liking it?

Great... getting used to the whole Bioware RPG scheme... So here's the cons off the bat:

Cons:
Intro comic was epic... but impossible to understand on any sort of deep level
...which in turn made the first two hours of the game completely confusing
You can definately tell it's a port
Overwhelmed by all the codex entries
Not sure when and where to do things (but I guess that's the point)
3rd person view = I hate those dog alien things
Load times

Pros:
The graphics are good, if not great at times.
Like the combo of character conversation-driven RPG, shooter, and mini-games
Speaking of which, the dialogue is top-notch
I also like the fact that I can either command my troops and micro-manage or let them run wild (with varying levels of success)
Looking forward to developing the story some more (and my character... already have plans for my 2nd playthrough!)

Overall: I'm happy I made the purchase!

Yup, missing Mass Effect 1 is quite bad, many consider it better than ME2.
The codex entries are impressive, but help to get into this very rich universe.
I suggest you to not do what the Illusive man tells you to do until you have nothing else to do.
Do any secondary mission first, they're not hard and will give you the opportunity to level up.

I've owned Mass Effect for 6 months now, but it's for PC and my current one is so bad that ME doesn't run properly on it. I'll get a new computer on Monday, I'm excited to start playing ME then! Maybe it'll lead me into playing ME2 too. By the way, I saw it in a store here for only 10?. In the same place where I bought the first one for the same price.2011-06-18 19:27:00

Good advice... does that include recruiting? I suppose I should go and visit the Citadel... I've been putting it off for a bit. I've also done some Cerberus-related quests. I'll take your advice and to everything not related to Cerberus and the IM from here on out.

One quick question... is this the sort of game where one decision will force you to miss out on a whole questline (and not offer any equivalent alternative)?

Yup it includes recruiting.
There are moments in which you'll be forced onto a mission, wherever you are, whatever you want to do, but only the completion of of a certain amount of Illusive Man missions triggers those events.
And yes, there's a certain event that triggers a series of events that lead to the finale, though you can complete whatever you left behind afterward, but make sure you complete every loyalty mission and try to upgrade the Normandy with all the power-ups, or the game will end in a total massacre.
Having all the members surviving is hard stuff, though I knew what to do, the first playthrough Mordin (even being loyal), Jack and Zaeed (not loyal) died on me.

@Omega, thanks for the advice! I'm working on side missions for the tank and will concentrate on Alliance-related quests (and whatever else seems to be non IM-related) until they're all gone.

As for the OT, I think I've come to a slow but thoughtful decision, mostly thanks to the comments left here in this thread: I'm most likely going to use my gift cards to pre-order Battlefield 3.

I've given the Modern Warfare series a play back with MW2, and although it was fun, I grew tired of the learning curve that came with the game and the immaturity of the community. Granted the latter portion can be found in any FPS, but I'm willing to take my chances on a game that emphasizes teamwork. Even at it's best, the concept of teamwork was scarce to be found in MW2 during the three months or so that I played regularly. It seems like the BF series heavily favors this style of gameplay, the latest videos on console look gorgeous, and the class system is incredibly intriguing.

I've been told by a certain significant other of mine that Playstation Move will be mine come Christmas time (being the only "big ticket" item I'm interested in other than an actual game), so BF3 seems like a good investment at this time.

Thanks to all of you for your input and suggestions!

...even though it looks like you've made your mind up, I still recommend Portal 2. It's one of the only games I thought was worth it's full price & I was happy to pay it to support it.

Also, I totally agree on you on BF3 over MW3.

Yeah, Portal 2 will remain on my "Must Have...Eventually" list, don't worry. It's more about what I can afford right now and I tend to look for games that have large replayability. While Portal 2 does come with co-op (cross-platform, even!) and a free Steam download for PC, once that game is done, it's done.

BF3 offers endless multiplayer, and ME2 offers great replayability in creating an alternate character (female bad-*** Renegade Shepard, I'm looking at you!)

Of my short list of games in the OP, they were selected for gameplay/overall reception/graphics first, replayability second, and ultimately my choices boil down to the best combination of the two.

Sounds like a good choice. I'm really kinda sick of the Call of Duty franchise right now. I mean, it's become this big annual thing and when that happens it kinda looses its...greatness I suppose you could say? I think I'll be picking up Battlefield instead of Modern Warfare this time around.2011-06-20 15:26:00

That's another good point! It's true that the BF series doesn't come out with a 'signature' title every year... thus extending the life of the game even further. Whenever a new CoD comes out, a large percentage of the community migrates over to the new game, leaving the online aspect in the older one lacking.

BF3 should have a considerable active online community that persists much more than just one year, if BF:BC2 is any indication.

Yeah, that was the only 'downside' if you could even call it that to Portal 2. Even though i've played through it two or three times, it doesn't really offer anything new each time you play it. But to me thats ok. Like the old saying goes, quality, not quantity!

I've not really played much of the multiplayer myself, other than with my useless friends on split screen (Warning: Split screen Portal 2 will ruin friendships! xD) and I kinda missed the boat for online due to PSN going down just at the wrong moment. But, it's pretty fun and, if you play with someone who actually knows what they're doing, quite rewarding.

Indeed. The quality of that game is worth a replay, but in terms of different content the second time around, it's just not there. (Not that I wouldn't enjoy a second playthrough.) And I think it's a game my girlfriend might actually enjoy, even though she's the type of player that get's frustrated when she can't solve a puzzle and hands me the controller (which in turn absolutely infuriates me, as I want to help her not just do it for her... what's the point?)

I got her into Dead Space but she got stuck in one of the trickier parts and just stopped playing. She's a stubborn Polish woman with a tendency to get turned off from a game rather quickly. Plus, now she's got all her trash reality TV saved to our DVR so she hardly ever plays the PS3 any more.

However, she's rather excited about the prospect of Move and getting some workouts in using some of the games that are available.

(On a side note, has anyone here used any of those games to work out? If so, any recommendations? )

Every time I play table tennis I destroy half of my room, just saying, because I want to test how quick the response can be so I start to swing really hard and quick, still I miss the impact on the racket, the vibration don't work good

I you want a real work out - try Kung Fu Live;
You need ideal lighting conditions and a large empty space to play it - but it is SO much fun.
I can only manage 2 or 3 rounds before I'm absolutely knackered.
And the next day it feels like someone has beaten you up with Kung Fu.

But it is SOOOO much fun
