Archive: 6 posts

I've been set some biology homework to write about what captain Scott ate during his doomed treck to the south pole. only trouble is, I can't seem to find any website that actually tells me what he ate during the trip. anyone happen to know the answer?2011-06-08 19:48:00

From memory (which isn't always 100% accurate) - I remember hearing that they brought along alot of dried beef and potatoes. Also Suet Pudding because of it's high fat content. The expedition was also sponsored by Oxo - so they would have definately had plenty of that.
They also recently found one of his bottles of whiskey - so they certainly brought along alcohol.

They also stupidly brought along Ponies - and hay for the Ponies...which they should have eaten, but didn't.... which is partly why the expedition failed. (actually there are conflicting accounts - some say Scott refused to eat the Ponies, others that they did eat the Pony meat, and the ponies they didn't eat were for the return journey)

Worth noting was, because Scotts party decided to man-haul the sledges, they were expending double their calorific intake... and also didn't have enough fuel to melt enough water - meaning they were malnourished and dehydrated.(I assume that's what your biology teacher will be interested in)

But quoting your source as "Some random internet guy's memory" won't win you any prizes

I watched a fascinating documentary on Scott's expedition on BBC 1 or 2 a few weeks ago. It's not on BBC iPlayer any more but some kind person has uploaded it to Youtube. It should say something there.

It's a good job they didn't because if the cold didn't kill him the bad jokes on the wrapper would have.2011-06-09 12:26:00
