For ***** sake it's you're not your!

Archive: 42 posts

Am I the only person who gets incredibly amazed of how stupid people are when they write your instead of you're or you are?

Example: "Your so awesome."
When I read something like that I just really want to hurt that person...

Well that's the end of my rant, your opinions on it?

Well when someone types that or writes that how do you know English is there first language? If you are learning another language in school I'm sure you make plenty of mistakes grammar wise.2011-06-06 16:18:00

Since a language is meant as a tool to better communicate with others, then not using that language properly defeats the purpose of using it. So by misspelling words you not only make communication more difficult, but you are also showing rudeness towards those you are attempting to communicate with. People who say they don't have time to write the words correctly expect others to have the time to properly discern what is being communicated. How is that not rude? Some people used to say it was because they were used to using shorter words from texting. But that doesn't explain why they write things like "dose" instead of "does", or why they use "where" instead of "were".

That being said, I have done this myself on occasions...and I'm an A* grade english student :/ Don't prosecute me

I laugh when people do that. I was in a fight of words via PS3 messaging with some hot shot black kid that called me a 'faggut'. Not knowing he was too kool to spell it right, I then asked if he was mentally challenged :3 but then he messaged back saying he liked spelling it that way. No sense at all -_- the only 2 words I spell different are kool and nize. Cuz I'm not too sexy for my shirt. I'm too sexy for my words

Haha I'm probably guilty for this every now and again. One thing that bugs me is when people use little I's in sentances, rather than capitals. Even in text messages haha.

Or when people 'TLK LYK DIS'.

Meh, I'm not too bothered about it. It's you're own loss if your not getting your grammar right.

God, there's a lot of crappy punnctuation and people pointing those mistakes out here.

My friend gets so upset when people use "your" wrong, but I don't really mind. I mean, if it's a formal paper, then get it right, but when you're texting someone or whatever then I really don't think it matters.2011-06-07 20:39:00

It does look a little annoying sometimes, but for some people, English may not be their main Language, so they really don't know that they did anything wrong Just a simple mistake. Your awesome Nys! Your pointed out the thing Moon did! See what I did there? 2011-06-07 20:55:00

Don't get me wrong... I like to get pointlessly annoyed at completely inconsequential things as much as the next man.
But there are better things to be getting annoyed about.

I mean the greatest playwright of all time - William Shakespeare (Shakespear, Shakspere, Shaksper, Shakespere) couldn't even spell his own name. And there has never been a "golden age" of spelling and punctuation. The English language has always bee,n and still is, evolving - shedding words and spellings that it no longer uses and acquiring new ones.

What really annoys me though, are people using numbers when chatting, as well as compressing words like...

"W8, 1 FRGT Sum2N 2 N dat Tst"

Altcauly, the odrer of lteters in wdors isn't iomprntat to yuor binran, as lnog as the fsrit and lsat lttrees are in the rghit pcale. If you are fuenlt in Egslinh, you soluhd be albe to raed tihs wthiuot dfcuitlfiy. Hevoewr, tihs knid of sienlplg eorrr is not nmarol.

So bisalacly, slenplig's siltl ipamrotnt.

I don't mind when people make unintentional grammatical mistakes, such as confusing your and you're, and there, their, and they're, but when ppl lol typ lke dis lol on purpose just because they think it is cool or evidently too lazy to type normally, or when they say things like "lol" or "omg" out loud, in real life, it really annoys me. :kz:

Hey how do you know if they're not dyslexic or something?
Anyway, it doesn't really bug me unless I just keep seeing it all over the place. Then it starts to get on my nerves. Other than that I don't really care, and I also, like many others before me, hate it when people use numbers in their words and when they shorten their words to just a couple of letters......

On the subject of "chat speak"...

My favorite is when I see someone use "lyke" instead of "like" or something similar. It's the same amount of letters, why not just spell it like a human being?

Hopping in on an old conversation, but just wanted to echo what's been said already about how English evolves.

Neat fact from QI - in the not so distant future, English as we know it now will probably become obselete (http://www.redgage.com/blogs/hoanghuuthinh/the-future-of-english.html)as the most commonly spoken/written language, and replaced by any number of possibilites, the current hot favourite being Singlish. ("I not so old lah, I 18 nia.") I used to play online with someone who constantly wrote in Singlish, and at first found it really difficult to understand. Took me ages to get the swing of things.

Nowadays, the advent of online and mobile communication will only serve to speed up the process of diverging English. Text English, for instance, has emerged as the more comprehensible English for its users and therefore being influential on the future of the language. 'I love you ' now becomes more prevalently the text, i luv u; 'going to', gonna and so forth. Here comes a word recently accepted by the OED, tweet (or twitter) - a message sent using the Twitter social networking service. Another new word is google, meaning to find information about something or somebody using the search engine Google. It may be generalized as “to search for information on the web, particularly by using the Google search engine; to search the web for information related to a new or potential girlfriend or boyfriend”!? These following words may also be embraced in the OED in the near future.

Oh and also:

BEST POST EVER.

Anyway, off topic. Sometimes grammar does irritate me (to the point that I morph into Grammar Nerd Extraordinaire), but only in certain environments. As many have said, in forums and online chat you will meet with people who don't necessarily speak English very well, so it's forgiveable. If, however, I am reading a 'formal' review, comment, article or what have you, then yes, it really irritates me. But not as much as the OP's use of 'of' instead of 'by'...

I mean this in the nicest way possible, I really do, but why can't you just admit to not being able to spell very well? I've seen you use that excuse a lot before, and honestly, it's clearly not the truth. Reason has less letters than 'resound,' so I don't see how spelling it that way would be an act of laziness. Again, I mean no offence, but I have much more respect for those that can tell the truth and admit to something.
