Attacking the 'bad guys' is okay?

Archive: 13 posts

I was just wondering, from an observers point of veiw (having looked at this site often without posting in ages) ; if bullying the members deemed 'in the wrong' is fine. For example in this thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=57666-Censorship-by-Morgana-and-Comphermc) (and I know what those guys did was wrong) some (or most) of the posters were being down right mean to the 'bad' people. I'm just asking if when someone is deemed a troll or a nuisance, it's fine to bully them.

(I do know it wasn't that bad, but it did seem a little- off the way some posts recently are attacking the 'bad' people)

It wasnt bullying to be honest. It was harsh because they wouldnt stop their argument even when it was made clear they were becoming pests. It was caused by annoyance and ConfusedCartman summed it up. Some were to far and others were trying to resolve rather than name calling. I dont know if he thought I was name-calling or helping or whatever but it wasnt bullying it was a very heated argument.2011-06-05 14:03:00

my example is just an example, not the only incident.2011-06-05 14:42:00

I think it can be wrong if it's just a one off sort of thing. For example if someone says something and other people retaliate in a sarcastic sort of way, I've seen this on many forums and their isn't much reason for it.

But the example thread you gave, from what Ive read, then the person kind of deserves it because everyone is saying that they keep posting random/innapropriate things that users see as spam? I haven't seen any of the members before as I'm new.

But if I ever saw anything I thought was 'spam', or something I didn't think I could have a discussion with, then I'd -personally leave the thread well alone because I couldn't contribute anything to it. Threads usually like that get locked within afew hours anyway because people don't respond. Personally, I just wouldn't get involved with it and then it doesn't add fuel to the flames sort of thing.

that's my point, do they deserve it? Is it okay to break the rules when someone else has broken them?

The person who started that thread singled out two forum members for criticism, even putting their names in the thread title. Everybody who posted in defence of those two members got accused of being part of a self-serving clique who oppress other creators and who kiss up to each other to further their own popularity. These comments were harsh and undeserved, and amounted to bullying. Many posters who have great respect for those people being singled out came forward to tell the thread starter that their bad attitude was out of order, yet the thread starter responded with further abuse and made it quite clear that he had no respect for LBPC, it's members or it's moderators.

So, now you start a thread trying to generate sympathy for that person, suggesting that they themselves were bullied!? Are you actually serious?

I think that everyone should just remember why your actually using these forums, well for me it's to meet new friends on little big planet and help others, not to name call and cause arguements.

It isn't really called for here, especially as it's a huge community based game.

again, not the only incident; just an example. I am not on a 'side' of the argument, I just find it interesting how starting a fight is considered more of an offense than joining in, and how only one seems to break the rules even though both people are attacking eachother.

Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire. I dont think bullying a bully is fine but if that bully is being particularly abusive and nasty it will make people to fight back. If someone started hitting you (no reason why) What would you do, take it? Of course not you would fight back or tell someone. Then that person knows and everybody knows that he is just being mean so everybody gets angry at the bully. No difference he started a fight for no reason so we fought back.2011-06-05 17:46:00

Turn the other cheek.

I looked back and read some responses from the community after mine and I'd have to agree that several were a little mean spirited. I'm not saying mine wasn't in anger, but (not naming any names) I think some responses were almost a little childish with the name-calling.

Most Bullies have been bullied in the past, making the people their bullying to (might) be a bully in the future.
But when bullies collies this happens...

Yeah, I think we should be a little less mean. For example, after the aforementioned discussion moved to the Feedback board, there were a large number of responses that didn't add anything new to the discussion apart from adding to the anger. It conjured up the image of people joining in to kick someone who was already down. I suppose they wanted to express support for the site, but I could have done without those.

Fighting fire with fire is great for controlling forest fires, but I don't think it applies to the internet. You create a bad atmosphere which can reflect on the rest of the forum, and it doesn't even help to resolve the issue: if the 'bad guys' were serious they'll only get more upset and less open to reason, and if they were just trolling you're giving them more fuel for the flames. Also, the whole thread tends to become a mess, drowning any rational thoughts.

In my opinion it's best to ignore the insults and respond maturely to the flaws in their reasoning. Without insults to jump on, they'll be forced to respond to the rational arguments instead. Then it will be clear soon enough whether they're trolling, are simply misguided or actually have a good point.
