Music movie: Britain's Got Talent entry (YouTube vid included)

Archive: 4 posts

This is a short, sentimental story to music animated in LBP2, created for my BGT entry this year. I entered as an untrained musician and created animations for two of my pieces, with this intended to be shown in the background of a live performance in the final had I gotten there. There's LOTS of Sackboys! I use a good 2.5 to 3 thermometer's worth of content. The level is on YouTube with the final song, embedded below.

This video is a direct capture - there is no editing in post except a couple of fade tweaks at the beginning and end for quality. The LBP2 level has an in-game version without singing.

Things I like:
o. The response from viewers, many of whom say it's a very emotional piece. The Sackbots can be as empathetic as well as any human actors!
o. Managing to cram in all the content. Finding how to cheat the therm and get in every Sackbot I wanted proved essential. Prior to that I was blowing the thermo not even halfway through and before the complex scenes!
o. The direction. This is my first video and I think the direction and camera isn't too bad. The acting works too.

Things I'd change:
o. Lip syncing. See bugs below, but this one really hurt.
o. I can fit in more detail. I don't think it matters too much, but after finding my thermo cheat, I could have been more generous with the art without having to worry about it all fitting into one level.
o. The lighting isn't great. LBP2 is capable of much, much better. I don't think I can change the look much in this video, but another subject could use LBP2's awesome volumetric lighting to better effect.
o. Custom backgrounds? I've never got to grips with the layer cheat. TBH if MM are going to support the extended layers, why don't they just have them as an option in create mode?? But I don't really see myself as a proper LBP creator if I'm not using advanced hacks!

Problems encountered:
o. Synchronising with music was hard. The music sequencer doesn't have enough resolution, so I embedded sequencers to controls events within it, which meant a lot of trial and error aligning events. There are also bugs with signals not passing through sequencers, but use of wireless transmission was actually better for me.
o. Lip syncing. Because of how I had to cram everything in, recording SB's was a nightmare. There are also bugs with disappearing vocals on rerecording sound clips.

Aha! I have actually played this level, and I have to say I agree with all the reviews- a very touching piece indeed! Even better with the vocals - who's singing this? and is it your own piece? I don't think I've ever heard it before...

RE: Voices cutting out - this is an issue I encountered also. About halfway through my movie the vocals would cut out then back in again. One workaround I found was splitting the game sequencer into seperate parts, so that each sequencer only controlled a minute or so of video. If you've already done this . . . then I have no other answer lol!

I will however say that I really adored this movie. The sentiment contained within is really very touching, and the direction only adds to the emotion. A very well done movie!

I don't think I've ever heard it before...It is my own composition based on the life of my grandmother who's biography I had just read when I started thinking about creating an act for BGT. The singer is my sister's friend who came round one evening to record, although in this age of internetery it shouldn't be hard to get copies of a voice for a long distance collaboration and play it out a PC of MP3 player into a SingStar mic adaptor.

The original captured audio (me 'singing'!) works, but trying to change the audio causes some to get lost. I wonder if it's a level complexity thing, and maybe recording the vocal perfectly as the first thing would work? Although that might be hard to pull off with scene spawning as I used.

Hmm, perhaps the fact that there are so many sequencers embedded into the music sequencer is setting things off. For my own movie I timed up a seperate game sequencer (or three!) so that they would run in sync with the beat: one bar on the game sequencer = one beat. It made for some incredibly long sequencers but it meant I could synch the video without afeecting the music sequencer too much. The only job that music sequencer then had to do was to play the music and batteries embedded within, which would set off a couple of magic mouths (as you have/will see by checking the community prizes ) at appropriate intervals.

It took a lot of fiddling to get things to work - if you still need a hand I'd be willing to come take a look, though I can't guaruntee I have the answer, sometimes a fresh eye is all you need
