The game tells you that a player will need to find a level key before they can play a level you've locked. But I've never been able to figure out how to place a level key in a level. Is this something you get only once you've published a level, or what?

Yup, once you publish a level, a key will appear in your popit tools menu - I think it's the same tab as the cameras are in.

How does level keys work? Can you publish a locked level then give the key to others to play test it? Then when you've tweaked and reworked it can you then republish it but as unlocked. Just wondering as I'm yet to publish a level and will need testers at soem point.

You place it in a level as you would a prize bubble, so when the player walks over it they collect it and the level unlocks when they're next on your Earth. There's also the option to share keys with your friends like you can with any other ordinary object you make yourself by hitting the square button when highlighted in your popit.
