Christmas: What do you think about the whole thing?

Archive: 50 posts

Christmas is a lovely time of year for everyone. Or is it? What do you guys think about all this?

Personally, i love it! The whole feeling of sitting infront of my PS3 with my Christmas tree in the corner, the warm scent in the air and the Christmas lights outside my house (even though we dont put them up on ours) is truly magical!

But for some of you it might be a pain in the nelly. Tell us down here about your views

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT

I really love it for spending time with the family and have always taken at least a week off just to live in the moment of it.
I really do think most people are happier in themselves and towards others the closer it gets to Christmas.

THE PRESENTS ARE JUST A BONUS

Also I like nothing better than post pics of my tree (non-rotated) on forums

Well "I Enjoy it and look forward to it every year!"

A lot of things happen every year with me, and they vary. 2006 was great for example.
2007? No So much lol. I spent most Christmas Eve in the hospital, which pretty much ruined it. Nothing happened to me, but one my friends got careless.

So..yeah.
I am looking forward to it this year though.

He's trying to be funny (I think) but he hit the nail right on the head.

I love a lot of things that come with Christmas - most of which have already been mentioned - but having to spend time with certain members of my family is ludicrous. The idea is nice as you lead up to Christmas, but by the time it's Christmas Eve I'm usually ready to get the heck out of Dodge.

I love a lot about Christmas (The tree, the food, the presents, the eggnog, and the christmas specials), but I feel a lot of it is too commercial. The entire holiday just sticks it's nose into Thanksgiving and the whole holiday is just a big shopping spree.2008-12-08 21:45:00

I love it and look forward to it every year and have since I can remember. We usually go away and stay in a nice 5 star hotel for a few days and spend Christmas day at the beach as neither Marti or I have any family in Brisbane, this year we're going to Surfers Paradise. The only thing I hate about it is having to go shopping beforehand, the amount of people in the malls gives me the absolute ***** so I try and avoid that as much as possible.

Not a religious person at all. Well, I sort of think ill of it, but Christmas is a time of year where people who are usually mean-spirited pretend to be decent. Plus it's a magical time of year.

Hooray!

It is, without a doubt, my favorite day of the year. I get chance to see all of my relatives, I never have to work, there's always good food, almost everyone is always in a good mood, I love the decorations (especially the lights) I love everything about the day really.2008-12-09 09:26:00

Christmas has never been very enjoyable for me. I always get forced into doing things I don't want to do. My family always makes me spend it with them, and I hate my family. Then when I complain about being forced to spend the whole day with them they get really angry and call me an ungrateful brat. (Maybe I am :/) Then I get my presents taken away and sent into my room where I am forced to sit and think about how ungrateful I am. That wouldn't be so bad if I didn't think about all the people freezing to death outside. Then I realize my parents are just trying to have a relationship with me, but doing a terrible job at it. When I try to tell them that, they get mad and my dad takes it out on the rest of the family. Next day, we forgive and forget.

In other words, I hate the holidays...

On another note...

I think I turned my Literature teacher into an emo with my Christmas poem...

Erm. I hate Christmas?

I'm not religious, and I don't decorate my house. My mum does 'cause she loves Christmas. I join in because if I don't give presents and just get them, then I'm a git really.
There's just everything that comes with it. The vast amount of money that goes into it, the advertisements, the music, the fact that all it is to most people is a day to give presents and stuff your face. It's lost all meaning. I understand that this isn't the case for some people, but the Christmases I have to endure are just that.

Also doesn't help that I had the best Christmas ever with my ex in America, and nothing will ever top that. So every Christmas now is a reminder of how good things were, and how the current one doesn't compete.
That plays a pretty big part of it.

I love this time of year.Yeah its been comercialized to death.Changed into something that it should have never been turned into. But this time of year just makes me want to smile. And tell all my friends how great they are.I love to see the look on my boys face on Christmas morning when he gets up to see what Santa brought him and just laugh.
To think we where all like that once before we realized what it was really about.
But I still love this time of year.I only have one kid so me and the wife also pick an Angel to help during the Holidays. Its all in how you make it out to be.Just smile and say Merry Christmas All.Have a lovely holiday and Happy New Year.

If I had a kid, I'd be able to love it again. That would give me something to enjoy about it.
Right now it's just for the presents. And it seems like a whole "I did it because I had to, not because I want to" deal.

Tis an awesome time of year. I enjoy the whole gift giving, merryment and time off work. :3 Oh yeah and the hearty meal on Christmas day. xD Om nom nom.

Also, history shows that end of December festivities have been around in Europe since before Christianity so getting hung up on the religious aspect is pointless.

It is the most wondeful time of the year. This will be our daughters first Christmas and it will be exciting to see her reaction when opening her presents. Unfortunately we have no family in Japan and cannot travel to Europe/Canada this year due to the finalization of our daughters adoption papers so the atmosphere isn't as great as back home but we will try to make the best of it (although the Japanese "like" Christmas it is not nearly as big a holiday as it is for Westerners so the whole feeling is not as strong here).

I also agree with AtheistSeaOtter's commnets on religion. I am an atheist myself and my parents aren't religious either but we have been celebrating Christmas since forever. I think for most European families in general religion is a non-factor and Christmas is rather a grand tradition that has been followed for hundreds of years. Nowadays the religious significance is pretty much zero imo.

I love christmas. Gifts galore, good food, fun and games and being merry with the family. A lot of people have really dull christmas' sitting in front of the TV watching re-runs of lame shows, and I feel really sorry for those people but I really love christmas because all of my family embraces it (We're all atheist LOL) and just have a really good day out of it.

Brace yourselves for a longwinded reply.

Christmas is a fantastic event but there are many things which make me in the dumps on that day. I love spending times with my friends and family, who I live quite far away from and do not see very much of. I of course have friends here but they cannot compare >_<

I am not a Christian, I am an atheist, though I think of Christmas as a time of gathering.

Sometimes on Christmas, I just think about others from different countries and continents who would love to receive gifts. Gifts are not important on Christmas for us, but they are for them. When I get money for Christmas, I donate it.
So that is why Christmas is not the biggest thing of the year for me

This Christmas I just found out it's gonna be just me, my mum and my dad.
So, me and my dad hate Christmas, my mum used to love it, now she's stopped caring. We're gonna open our presents and be all like "Cool. Thanks." And that'll be it.

Then I'll drink, they'll watch TV, and we'll sleep.

Educating about the origin of Christmas in a Christmas thread is annoying?

I'll stop educating if you wish, but this topic has not been covered thus far.

For those who wish to know more:

" Pagan traditions: Many Pagan cultures used to cut boughs of evergreen trees in December, move them into the home or temple, and decorate them. 7 Modern-day Pagans still do. This was to recognize the winter solstice -- the time of the year that had the shortest daylight hours, and longest night of the year. This occurs annually sometime between DEC-20 to 23. They noticed that the days were gradually getting shorter; many feared that the sun would eventually disappear forever, and everyone would freeze. But, even though deciduous trees, bushes, and crops died or hibernated for the winter, the evergreen trees remained green. They seemed to have magical powers that enabled them to withstand the rigors of winter."

I find learning about various customs of ancient peoples to be fascinating.

Origins of Christmas - from a CHRISTIAN website (http://www.allaboutjesuschrist.org/origin-of-christmas.htm)

"The date of December 25th probably originated with the ancient "birthday" of the son-god, Mithra, a pagan deity whose religious influence became widespread in the Roman Empire during the first few centuries A.D. Mithra was related to the Semitic sun-god, Shamash, and his worship spread throughout Asia to Europe where he was called Deus Sol Invictus Mithras. Rome was well-known for absorbing the pagan religions and rituals of its widespread empire. As such, Rome converted this pagan legacy to a celebration of the god, Saturn, and the rebirth of the sun god during the winter solstice period. The winter holiday became known as Saturnalia and began the week prior to December 25th. The festival was characterized by gift-giving, feasting, singing and downright debauchery, as the priests of Saturn carried wreaths of evergreen boughs in procession throughout the Roman temples."

I was referring to anti-religion in general. I know you're not directly insulting anyone, but you're coming off a bit preachy. Just be cool.
