Sackbook down temporarily due to legal issues

http://i35.tinypic.com/wtx1xe.png 8th December 2008: As expected I've been asked by Sony's Sacklawyers to take down Sackbook whilst they take a look at how the data is accessed to ensure everything is safe and lovely (it is, but they are right to make sure of such important things). Please keep your burlap fingers crossed that Sackbook can return in the not-too-distant future in some form or other. If you cross your toes too, there may even be added useful thingamabobs and fun doodahs to play with. Hope to see you all again soon, Chris & Sackbook the Sackboy. I can't say that was unexpected. I don't know how the outcome will turn out though. | 2008-12-08 19:07:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
It was only a matter of timegrrgrrgrr:kz::kz::kz: I knew this was gonna happen, but thought it would've been up a little longer Hope Sony don't mess this up as it was a really great site Sony and MM are just jealous they couldn't do a official one even half as good | 2008-12-08 19:09:00 Author: dorien Posts: 2767 |
And I've hardly used it, but it's such a great site! And what Dorien said is true | 2008-12-08 19:22:00 Author: GuyWithNoEyes Posts: 1100 |
Hey Sony! Hey Sony! I hate you. | 2008-12-08 19:53:00 Author: Unknown User |
Hurling insults already? From the sound of things, it looks like this is being looked at in a quite reasonable manner. | 2008-12-08 19:57:00 Author: Risen Posts: 251 |
Hurling insults already? From the sound of things, it looks like this is being looked at in a quite reasonable manner. They could look at it without taking it down They know exactly what it does and have only taken it down why they're deciding what to do about it | 2008-12-08 20:01:00 Author: dorien Posts: 2767 |
You really can not blame Sony for "looking at" Sackbook. As was noted in their posting, Sony claims that they want to make sure that data is secure. You REALLY can not blame them for wanting to see how their data is accessed and used; if the data can be pulled and posted, can if be modified and corrupted? I would certainly want to know. I JUST HOPE that if Sackbook is safe and secure, they leave it the heck alone. If Sony can not have the on-line access and functionality that Sackbook seems to provide at this early point, they need to either leave it alone or try to do it better. They have recieved a few black eyes early one with the release delay and moderation issues that I hope they try to avoid another one if at all possible. They could look at it without taking it down They know exactly what it does and have only taken it down why they're deciding what to do about it What if they left it up while decided and there was something there that was screwing with the data? But then again, how has the moderation process worked so far, with levels going back after a day or two? | 2008-12-08 20:03:00 Author: cognimetrix Posts: 14 |
I think it's much too soon to react to what little info we've gathered. It doesn't look like Sony sent a standard Cease and Desist order, which is what would have happened if they simply wanted the site shut down. I take this as a good sign. I see three possible outcomes : 1) Sony finds nothing wrong, Sackbook remains as it was. 2) Sony finds nothing wrong but likes the idea of offering a web interface for server information, and make their own (or acquire Sackbook). 3) Sony finds something wrong, Sackbook is shut down or the servers are patched to deny access. Which outcome will happen is entirely up to whoever makes the decision. | 2008-12-08 20:30:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |

That's exactly what I was thinking might happen Throw money at the situation and start controlling it ANYWAY - Sony will probably find nothing wrong with it and then let it re open and then Facebook will sue them or something lol | 2008-12-08 20:45:00 Author: dorien Posts: 2767 |
I wanna have an answer from Sony, actually their opinion about it wether they'll agree with it or not. | 2008-12-08 21:13:00 Author: oldage Posts: 2824 |
What a really crappy online foundation for this game... | 2008-12-10 02:12:00 Author: Unknown User |
cognimetrix, thank you for posting. I have moved your thread to Front Page News, and fixed it up a little bit for better presentation. | 2008-12-10 02:30:00 Author: aer0blue Posts: 1603 |
I understand WHY this happened (Some guy essientally hacked into Sony's servers), it's just that it's annoying to us. However, considering that that guy hacked the servers (really no other way for Sackbook), he may face criminal charges for this- or something. not too sure. But I can understand why Sony wouldn't want to have their servers hacked. | 2008-12-10 02:33:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |
man! i sure hope that they bring it back up though, oh and sorry that i have not been on the forums for a while, but i am back, along with a bright and chipper attitude (the beginning of this message does not count ) Cheers! | 2008-12-10 02:40:00 Author: RAINFIRE Posts: 1101 |

It seems as if he's analyzing all of the data that goes back and forth between Sony's servers and the registered end users. I don't know how he does it, but it's very intrusive, so I'm not surprised Sony wants a peek. I just hope Sony doesn't force him to shut down his site, then add these sorts of features to their own site. They have every legal right to, sadly. | 2008-12-10 03:11:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
Well, it seems from what little I saw of Sackbook that it was offering a better service than the search engine that's found in LBP. Though they were "beta", Sackbook was suggesting which levels would have the highest ratings as well as most likely to be hearted. That's more than what the default LBP search was suggesting, at least from the interface that's visible in the game. Given the amount of angst the in game search engine is causing among the more hard core user base, I could understand why Sony would be tender about the issue. | 2008-12-10 04:38:00 Author: Elbee23 Posts: 1280 |
Just an update linked from Sackbook.com, Sony explain their position on the issue of Sackbook. http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/12/09/%E2%80%9Csack-it-to-me%E2%80%9D%E2%80%A6weekly-answers-to-the-lbp-community%E2%80%99s-questions-129/ Sackbook.com An impressive community fansite popped up last week and we were all impressed, but we?ve been in discussions with the site owner and requested the site be suspended. Chris, the site owner, was happy to work with us on this. Our intent is to be able to offer everyone the choice of whether their shared data is visible or not in order to protect everyone?s privacy, and while Sackbook was doing nothing wrong in the way it presented information and had no access to any personal data, we believe this additional option is important. Looks like we can hope for the best | 2008-12-10 14:21:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
I find it unlikely they would simply take it down. If that was their position to begin with I doubt they would have bothered to notify the fanbase the way they did. As for security, I myself have had some concerns about what the technique used by Sackbook could be used for. Could it access PSN information, for instance? Could it be used to bypass the regular rating and moderation channels? Could it be used to impersonate another user in comments? | 2008-12-10 14:44:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
Indeed, they don't mention whether it will be back up or not, or when that time will be. I draw my conclusion that there is a *possibility* of it coming back from the fact that they've bothered to talk about it at all. The standard practice is to simply send a Cease and Desist order and move on. No one except those who knew about Sackbook would be the wiser, and I suspect that is a very small percentage of the fanbase. And as you've mentioned, most people would forget about Sackbook if it never comes back. | 2008-12-10 15:22:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
Actually, I think sackbook is coming back. The only issue Sony had was that everyone's information was available without their consent. Now I don't know why people would have a problem with that, but it seems fixable. The easiest option would be to hide everyone's information until you register and give your consent to display it publicly. That would also help the people who are registered since it would be easier to find member's levels without all the clutter. | 2008-12-10 19:29:00 Author: Voltiare Posts: 646 |

Honestly I found it astonishing that everything was visible right away, from everyone. I totally understand why Sony would want some sort of privacy settings. Of course once it's back up, I'll join the lot of you in making my "profile" or whatever visible to all... Why not right? | 2008-12-11 03:47:00 Author: KAPBAM Posts: 1348 |
i've been gone for about two weeks. could someone explain what sackbook was?? i gather it was some sort of facebook for LBP that pulled user and level information from the LBP servers. any more details on the functionality that anyone cares to provide? | 2008-12-13 13:30:00 Author: Conall-Star Posts: 157 |

You could basically view all the info that you had in LBP You could search for a PSN name then see all the levels made with all the info like comments, pics in level, hearts, plays, people currently playing...... So you could keep up to date with all your stats while away from your PS3 EDIT:That's how I got the pic in my sig VVVVVVV Just took the pic in game and uploaded it. then just went to Sackbook and copied the pic | 2008-12-13 16:01:00 Author: dorien Posts: 2767 |

It was awesome. Although, I started getting obsessed with hearts. I was checking all the time to see if my levels got more hearts lol. | 2008-12-13 16:01:00 Author: Voltiare Posts: 646 |
