Best format for a tutorial?

Archive: 7 posts

I'm planning on making a much better guide for how to make a damage system, but I'm not too sure on which format would be best for people.

1) A picture by picture guide on making it, with text to describe additional settings, etc?
or
2) A video with text/voice descriptions of how it's made?
or
3) Both?

I was thinking of using pictures for how to make it, and then a video of it in action.

I think a video would be better because you can see what you need to do and if you don't get it then you can just copy what you see.2011-05-31 21:36:00

For something that complex, I would definitely appreciate a video. You can see the thing as it is being built, and you can go back easily if you miss something. The only problems I can think of are making sure everything is big enough for people to see and making sure the audio is good (enunciate even if it is).

Still, pictures with text can be effective, but you would need to write very specifically each and every step. That is always what gets me lost on written tutorials, especially if the grammar is not good. If you take this route, keep your sentences simple: "Put A on B." "Grab the output of OR gate C on microchip Y. Go to microchip Z. Connect the wire to the top input of AND gate D." This will make it absolutely clear what you are doing and will even clarify the pictures, since wires can get messy.

Actually understanding what I say is what I'm worried about. I'll give it a shot, since I realize that actually watching someone connect the wires , etc, helps quite a bit, but I'll probably make some pics as well, just in case people have trouble with my video.

Anyhow, the reason why I ask is because I just discovered how to drastically improve my damage system (not really sure how many people care though, since it's level hardly got any plays). It now has a functional display, which is awesome, since I can now display 864000 different values on a timer, instantaneously, with very little logic (around 40 pieces)

Any health system I can look at and learn from is fantastic. Especially one like yours that seems flexible and efficient. I eventually hope to do something large scale at some point, and I want to learn as much as I can while I'm building.

For understanding what you say: What you do then is plan ahead on what you want to say, though not necessarily scripting. Have a list of bullet points off to the side with what you want to cover in order. And most of all...don't rush your speaking. If your brain gets ahead of your speech, just stop and take a second to gather your thoughts. No one will mind a goof if you come back from it with a clear point.

Maybe another thing to think about with the planning ahead-see if you need to split the video because of youtube time limits. That will help avoid the rushing.

I hope some of this helps. I usually look at things like this from a writing perspective because I do a lot of that in grad school.

In-game would work great, I agree, but covering everything would either be impossible or so boring that they hate the level.

Also, it would force a player to return to the level every time they forgot something (hmm, a way to get more plays...? Lol, idc though).

Another thing: I updated my health bar level to what I think is THE perfect health bar system. It's fairly light on the thermo as well (only 2 segments for 50 health systems, which is, at least to me, very little). If anyone wants to check it out before I make the tut, it's in my sig.
