SuperPhillip: The Game

Archive: 52 posts

Hello, all. SuperPhillip: The Game is my project I'm working on. It's going to be like its own game, so I'm really looking forward to it. SuperPhillip isn't just my username, but it's actually a character I created in the second grade (1994 or something like that). Since then, I've used the character in a lot of games and have written and drawn tons of stories and pictures based on the character.

ABOUT SUPERPHILLIP...

I keep reinventing him, and currently I'm writing an anime-styled episodic series. It's fairly serious, but there is plenty of humor injected. In my series, Phil is a teenager in high school. Not popular, but not socially inept either. This game I'm making is very loosely based on the characters as it's more tongue-in-cheek and light-spirited just like LittleBigPlanet.

GAME FLOW

There will be six themed areas in all with three main levels in each. At the end of each third level is a boss battle. I'm going to attempt to make these as fun and least frustrating as possible. You're not done if you just go from start to finish. There's unlockable levels which are opened by collecting all of the prize bubbles in a level. The 100% found bonus is a sticker that will open the door to the unlockable level's key. Each level has a challenge level to unlock.

Challenge levels are harder than the story levels. They take the concept introduced in a stage and expand upon it, making it tougher.

PRIZE BUBBLES

There's five of these hidden in each level. Some are out in the open, but others are placed in hard-to-see locations. Don't fret though because there's usually a subtle hint to their locations. The prizes in the levels are just photos. These photos are named and show a location of the level. I tried to make the photos as interesting as possible, and they don't take up as much room as objects. However, the prize for beating a challenge level is an object. They're going to be cool things I made for my game, so no worries.

CHARACTERS

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h8/SuperPhillip/LittleBigPhotos003.jpg

SUPERPHILLIP - The protector of his hometown, Central City. He's become Major Jennings' go-to-person for big-time crime that the police otherwise would be outmatched. SuperPhillip has no knowledge of where his powers originally come from. All he knows is that he can put on his red cap to instantly turn into SuperPhillip. He can call on his Super Sword for a longer range of attack in trickier situations.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h8/SuperPhillip/LittleBigPhotos004.jpg

DAN - Phil's best friend. He's one of the few people who know SuperPhillip's identity. Thus so, he happily helps out when he can, creating new inventions for SP, staying in contact with him via a watch on SP's wrist, and otherwise being the eyes and ears of SP when needed.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h8/SuperPhillip/LittleBigPhotos005.jpg

MAYOR JENNINGS - Current mayor of Central City. He's very much well-liked, and keeps in touch with SuperPhillip when needed. It's not clear how the two became associates. Mayor Jennings can sometimes be classified as eccentric, but SuperPhillip is always there to keep in check.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h8/SuperPhillip/LittleBigPhotos018.jpg

DR. CHRISTIAN - Dr. Lucias Christian was a brilliant professor at North City University whose specialty was robotics. One day when powering on a group of cleaning robots, the robots when haywire and started causing carnage throughout the city. SuperPhillip took care of the robotic rampage. However, Dr. Christian was promptly fired from his position at the university, and then swore to take out the staff one by one at the NCU. SuperPhillip stopped his scheme in the nick of time, and Christian was placed in jail where he did nothing but plot the demise of the person who got in his way-- SuperPhillip.

There's more characters, but I'll introduce them when the levels containing them arrive.

I hope you will look forward to and enjoy my game.

I am intrigued.
Kept trying to join your game yesterday but it wouldn't let me since you were creating

I'll play this once you get like 3 levels of the saga up methinks - i'm the type of guy who loves to perfect things, and if this is as good as i think its going to be, and i like the first level, i'll be heartbroken til the next few .

Can't wait!

Well, the tutorial level is almost completely separate from the story.

It goes like this:

0-1

1-1
1-2
1-3

2-1
2-2
2-3

etc.

The real story goes from 1-1 and on, so you won't get a cliffhanger from starting at 0-1.

Also, sorry you couldn't join me. I didn't even see a notification or anything. I feel bad.

So as soon as i'm done, i'll be on for it.
If your online i'll send you a message and we can go through it together

I'm heading out in a bit, but I'll be back shortly. It will probably be 6 pm (your time GMT) before I get back if that's okay.

You can play it by yourself, and then I'll play it with you to show you anything you missed.

Played it. It's good. It's not amazing (because it's only a tutorial level), but good.

I can't wait to see how the rest of the levels will turn out.

I like it.
Think it should come with a warning though.
"If you have OCD, do not play this level. You may never find all the stickers/objects".
Lol.

Jokes aside, it was a nice level, a good tutorial, fitting with the concept, but not derogative from it. Also, its nice to see a consistent episodic levels being made.

I look forward to the next set of levels heavily

I fixed something that happened during the published level that didn't the 100s of times I playtested it. Down in a secret area, the two boxes are no longer fallen over.

I added a message for a secret area telling the player that he/she should come back once I begin/finish the challenge level that goes with 0-1.

I also gave some subtle hints as well for those who find it hard to collect everything. Well, that is a challenge in itself, after all.

Please play it since I only have 4 plays right now. I go cry now with my teddy bear. :o

I couldn't ever get off the first bit and kept going down to the bottom and getting killed by the impossible spikes on the next screen down
Then I tried to show my cousin the game and searched for it on youtube and it ruined it for me by showing what to do at the first bit.
I never played it again, as I felt like I'd never be happy with myself playing through knowing I didn't do it ALL myself (I know I'm really weird lol)

It's a great tutorial for people who don't know how to play the game, but that's why they have the Prologue and first 2 levels of the Gardens. So, ironically enough, by the time anyone actually reaches this level (or rather navigates towards it), they will at that point already known how to play the game, making this level somewhat meaningless in return.

Don't get all teary eyed, I think it's a great level, if anything it's certainly innocent in execution, but that's also part of the problem. It's a level that plays by the rules and teaches the teacher's handbook, every lesson except how to take advantage of sticker switches, but doesn't really try anything new or exciting and that's the thing that it lacks.

Afterwards, it won't even really lead into the story, thus reducing this level to "optional" and thus loses a certain degree of its appeal. Still, great effort, excellent display, and next time just try to show players some new tips and tricks they wouldn't have been taught otherwise.

The point of teaching the basics is the game is not trying to be something in addition to LBP. I'm making it like it's a game someone "bought", so I included a detailed tutorial so it's theoretically like someone who picked up my game never played the source material.

That is the point of this.

I just downloaded it. At the first boss now. This game is ridiculous!!

Anywho, i may wait till you've got about 3/4 levels up before giving this a go, so i can get more of a feeling for the overall levels.

Just to let everyone know, I'm building a challenge stage to complement the tutorial level.

Challenge stages are unlocked by collecting all five prize bubbles in a level. Sometimes you unlock something to help you at the end of the game...

These stages are either races, survival, or high score challenges.

Too bad not a lot of people seem to care right now... :o

Not sure if you got my message (psn sismna) but heres some more feedback on top of it:
little annoyance, you can fall down the box to the far right in the box pit/whatever you want to call it. Maybe move it over a bit?
I really look forward to playing more, its quite hard to sift through the rubbish to descent levels like yours

Okay this level is irritating me.
How do you open the door at the right-hand wall during the race section? I know the last prize is there, but I can't get it open.

That door is just for show actually.
It'd be a fire hazard if the only way was through delivery!
I wanted to give the level a somewhat realistic feeling. I mean, of course, you have to suspend your disbelief for moving platforms that somehow help you progress. hehe

PM me which ones you got, and I'll give you a hint if you need it.

Well, I tried this level today. I must say I really liked it. The atmosphere, art design and music were really, really cool.

Just two things though. I noticed what looked like a secret area enterance just before the lift... if that's what I think it is. It just that I could not get the block moving... it moved very slowly with jumping, but not enough to actually get through, even after trying for what felt like a minute or two. Am I on the right track? Have you considered making that block grabbable or less stiff, especially seeing as the "grab" tutorial is just after it?

I also noticed that the lift when it went up had the checkpoint explode for some reason. Someone else pointed it out on the level comments in game.

But yeah, I really liked what I saw, and I really liked the secret areas too. It really made it feel fun, trying to work out how to get where.

If you can keep that sort of style and level of fun for the rest of the series, I look forward to playing the sequels!

One more quick question before I post... did you custom build that taxi and truck? They looked very cool!

I don't understand exactly where you're talking about with "I noticed what looked like a secret area enterance just before the lift... if that's what I think it is."

You mean the vent area?

I don't understand why the checkpoint on the lift does that. Should I glue it instead of having it bolted?

As for the truck and taxi, yes, I made those. I'm trying not to use already made objects if I don't have to.

Yeah, I'm trying to make levels that are aesthetically pleasing as well as fun to play for me. If it's frustrating to me, it'll probably be frustrating for someone else.

Thank you very much for your comments.

Well, I did not want to be more specific as if it's a genuine secret area, then it's always fun working it out for yourself. Let me use spoiler tags then. For people who have not worked out all the secrets, you have been warned.

There is the glass walkway which teaches you about transitioning. You go through and at the very end once you come out is a plain box coloured like the background. If you bump the box enough then you can see the sky behind it. It does look like a secret area, but I could not move it enough to get through.

Seeing as it looks like there is some way to get under the glass corridor from the fact that stuff is being emitted that does not interact with the walkway and there is a magic mouth visible at the start of the walkway underneath it, it looks like there is some way to get through. I thought it was this box thing, but it just would not move enough for me.

I might have just been trying the wrong thing and bumping a bugged area though. :o

The challenge level for The Warehouse is complete! The key for the level is hidden within The Warehouse (think box pit).

Again, challenge levels are earned by collecting all of the prize bubbles in a given level, and receiving the gift to unlock the door that holds the key to the level.

Challenge levels can be speed, survival, or high score challenges. They're much shorter and much more difficult than your typical level and have little to no bearing on the main story. However, completing a challenge level will earn the player a special object of some kind or another. Perhaps some of these will give the player the entire story...

Challenge 0-1: Frantic Factory

Race against the clock, leaping on boxes, swinging from lights, traversing chutes where shipped boxes blast across! Can you get the best score?

Please play and tell me what you think. I need more plays.

P.S. If you need some hints to where your missing prize bubbles are, shoot me a PM.

Hello again, everybody.

I have temporarily unlocked 0-1's challenge level.

You'd have to get all six prize bubbles, earn the 100% prize sticker, and unlock the level key with it in order to play this level any other way.

I just want to allow people to play it immediately though, so Frantic Factory, a race to the top, is now open to all.

Since apparently I'm good at hiding things... hehe

Yeah. I envision my game as its own thing, so I have it like the main game of LBP doesn't even exist.

Don't worry though. That's as much learning as anyone will get in a level.

I also opened a new level, so feel free to try it out. Us LBP St. Louisans have to stick together!

I guess, I don't know. That last line sounds lame...

Level should be unlocked for all now.
I unlocked it from the My Levels screen, but apparently that didn't work. I republished the level from My Moon this time.

Yes, this is what I'm going for.
No huge difficulty spikes unless we're talking about challenge levels (and even the first one isn't that challenging).

I have ideas on how I want the next level to flow. I'm just planning it in my head before I begin. The level will start being constructed tomorrow.

Thank you for the encouragement, everyone. I hope everyone likes my game.

I played this last night... I liked the whole superhero dialogue thing, and I think you did a great job creating an intro the way a retail game has. I like the HQ feel of the place, and the simple yet inclusive mechanics of doors and whatnot are impressive without being overwhelming. I especially liked the metal tunnel with the green glass casing - very aesthetically cool and it's 3 plane structure was well done. Flying off the roof was super duper too.

I think the part with the sliding planks where your tutorial ends is a notch up in platforming that doesn't fit well with the ease of the rest of it. Progression in difficulty is a necessary step, but that went from baby steps to something you only learn later in the final stages of a platformer.

The stage doesn't have much impact yet, since it's the only episode... but if it turns out to be a good series, I'll stay tuned.

I'll mull that over. It wasn't too hard, was it?

No, not hard for me... I just thought of it in the tutorial perspective that you were going for. At least the way I see it. It's not that it was difficult, but imaging it as a 1st stage tutorial, that was more a stage 2 or 3 platform segment. Nothing bad about, but hopefully you know what I mean.

Don't change anything you don't want to change, it's your vision, but that's just my two cents.

I see what you mean now. I don't want to add elements to the game that slowly. I'd go crazy if I did that. heh

I just figured why not take everything the player has learned and have them utilize them in a more trickier (but not too much trickier) obstacle course.

I don't even understand why the level is still locked.

I unlocked it in My Moon, and republished it.

You need to find all the prize bubbles to the key.
Perhaps I should have an arrow pointing down into the box room (where you enter the glassed-in walkway. It's easy to miss if you're just flying through it/not looking for it.

I had a chance to play this last night and I enjoyed it. I will not leave my usual wall of feedback because most people have already covered the points I wanted to mention and at the end of the day this is a tutorial level. I did like the way you made the TV screens, nice touch. The section where you teach moving between the different layers was cool too. One suggestion would be at the jetpack section near the beginning you have a jetpack on the platform and one on the ground. The one on the ground only extends back up to the jetpack on the platform. Why not make it so it extends back up all the way to where the player fell from? Minor point but I thought I should mention it. I look forward to the rest of the series. Check out my new level if you get a chance and let me know what you think.2008-12-18 02:32:00

I suspect you need to change the locked setting on the published level version, rather than the ones on your own moon. When I tried the challenge level yesterday it was still locked.

If the published level still says it's locked, the perhaps you need to be remove the key from the other level. Maybe make it a big lot of bonus points instead.

I don't follow. I know you're talking about the lift that takes you back up to the suspended platform, but I don't follow after that.

Whenever I try to jump on to the lift, the I automatically switch planes to the box in front of the lift. So it is really hard to get onto the lift itself. The box needs to be a little shorter than the lift, so that sackboy will automatically get onto the lift, instead of the box.2008-12-19 09:14:00
