STAR WARS: A New Hope: Chapter Two (Special Edition)

Archive: 28 posts

Hey all

Just published a new level, hope you'll play and enjoy it. This one has been a bit of an experimentation for me, certainly not as much of the traditional platforming I usually go for, more about just having fun with the bots. There's a bit of of top down as well so it's a real kitchen sink job.

I'm recommending 1P only, due to a host of reasons I realized late in the game. If you come up against any issues in 1P then I'll get right on it!

Big thanks to Jedi's Centurion & Jaeyden who had a few costumes going that were just too good not to use, and Jedi Comph who's vid tutorials really helped with the sackbot stuff.

Cheers!

Also, I've noticed that ending the level on a sub level doesn't take me to a rating page, is that just cos it's me or is that just a weird thing happening with the link..?

Amazing stuff. Mos Es?ly had some fantatic layer work with the buildings going into the distance. The cut scene with Greedo made me laugh. The switching from side/top-down views and interior/exterior locations was really well done, the scene with the M. Falcon taking off was ecellent. Nice variety of gameplay broken up by beautifully done scenes...it's over far too quickly. I have to remember to keep an eye out for jawas... only grabbed 5.

Amazing level, I have to play the first one, and play this a few more times. There are some great gameplay elements wrapped in the general plot of Star Wars. It's actually given me pause to rethink how I want to present what I am working on at the moment with a BTTF theme. You have really built some great game elements that work nicely.

I would like to say; you could ignore everything I am to write from this point on, because your game is extremely well polished, but I want to go through some very minor things I noticed as I played...

I understand why the landspeeder lands and the screech is cool? but maybe give it a little time before it drops. I was tapping X to get the spinning bubbles and is essence was bunny hopping from point to point to point.

I would have liked to push in the direction I was going with the L Stick, but I guess this it a personal thing. If I grazed the wall it felt like I was always turning into it.

The first two play throughs I couldn't proceed? I hit one of the sand people and I thought that I needed to shoot another one. I did try to shoot the house thing a few times but nothing seemed to happen. Not sure why? maybe I was too close.

I also snapped one of my jets off on the wall. Nothing wrong with that, but it fell 'down' (the way the level gravity is I guess and it would still glow blue when I hit X)

The capture the Jawas thing was very, very clever.

With the creationator I noticed that you can push them from the underside, and they move if you balance on the very edge. This may be so you don't get trapped, not sure but, again a very clever use of platforming in a very well themed stage. The fact that they have the subtle timer on them is genius.

I died without the grabinator in the canteen and the re spawn didn't give them back. I actually seemed like it re-triggered the water jump bit again, but as I had wrecked up the place, there were no tables left to get up there. I was forced to restart which took me back all the way to the first part.

I was waiting for a 'these aren't the droids' bit but that seemed to be to only missing thing (unless it is there and I missed it)

HAN SHOT FIRST: THANK YOU!

This was a truly epic stage. It makes me want to unheart everything I have ever hearted just to make the heart I gave it all the more serious. I will be following this series with keen interest.

Although not required (or expected) I would love it if you could check out my near to complete (concept wise) stage Miserable Flying Weather (http://lbp.me/v/yzhyj3), because as I mentioned I am trying to weave game elements into Back To The Future, and I was a little unsure with how far to push it. Your stage has inspired me to take some of my other stage ideas further.

Thats really helpful feedback Mr Fusion, ta! I've just sorted the spawn pointy in the Cantina, there is a sensor there to trigger the spawn but obviously wasn't kicking in properly.

The landspeeder - well I've gone through many many tweaks of that. In testing, some felt right at home with the way it handled, and some didn't, and it comes with doing any vehicle I guess. I've not yet played a top down racer that felt like it handled just right for me, so I've just gone with what I think is a good feel. I did have a slight drift on it as you've suggested, but again, it didn't 'feel' 'good. I have gone in and slowed it down just a tad so it's less zippy, maybe that'll help a lil. You must have been at point at the shield generator, it blocks the emitter, and haven't found a way round that one.

There's actually plenty of potential frustrations in this level - the vehicle handling won't please all, the bounce pad creatinator isn't something everyone will get to grips with straight away, a lot of disruptive cinematics (which is why the 'these aren't the droids' isn't there, i needed the level to pick up pace at that point) so I'm pleased you enjoyed it in spite of them. Thanks for your thoughts!

edit- send me an invite Mr, I'd be happy to.

I don't think 'in spite' of is the right phrase her. This level was phenomenal! It really has made me re-plan my BTTF efforts! In regards to controls; I'm a little old skool and will always invert my sticks in an FPS, and it is very clear that a lot of work was put into that land speeder. The issue with the generator seems like it makes sense in relation to what happened to me. I was lower down on the right hand side and nothing happened. I was chasing a sandperson (the sure scare easily) and I ended up behind it and that's when I heard the noise. Not really nesecary but have you thought of making a pipe/wire system partially obscured with sand and popping up in places that subtly links the fence with the generator? Or a little subtitle that triggers C3PO saying we need to shut down this fence to pass?

It's funny because I'm sure you were reading what I wrote about the speeder and were saying things like 'yeah, I tried that... tried that also". In a way I'm happy that the things I thought of were attempted, it means that maybe I could do something nearly as awesome soon. I didn't think the cinematics were disruptive and they really add to the stage.

Also your Falcon looks like a piece of junk

Nice idea, done it. I always try and veer away from any hand holding, but probably end up too far in the other direction.

Btw, apologies to anyone on my PSN friends list, the amount of tweaking and republishing I've done is probably really annoying.

Hi, julesyjules! I love your creations! And I was really glad to play your new level. It has so many cool details and very fun platforming part. I am big fun of original Star Wars movies and you gave me great gift with all these levels! Great work and very cool creations! You are the real LBP master!

BTW, I will announce your level in "recommended levels" section of Russian LBP community fun site LittleBigRussia.ru tomorrow.

And here are the video of you new level and previous one, that I recorded for our site:

I got to play this last night and was blown away. I left an ingame review and thought I'd give some kind words here as well. The details in this level are just amazing. I loved the landspeeder portion. I was in awe of how you did the environment, with the rock bridges over head, it looks incredible. I had a little trouble with the bounce pad creatinator on the portion where the plasma ball is going back and forth overhead but I got through it. The cantina scene was awesome and I loved all the costumes. Everything looks awesome and plays fantastic. Thank-you for making this and for the experience. Definitely one that I'll be replaying.2011-05-30 17:41:00

@ Domik - Thanks for that! And seeing a vid is probably the best playtesting you can get, thats great!

@ Biorogue - I've gone in since and gently nudged a few of the obstacles and made a couple of adjustments just to try and ease it up slightly for the younger players who are generally having a bad time with this. Thanks for the feedback, appreciated.

The Force is strong within this creator!
Having made a superlative LBP1 Star Wars series I was interested to see what could be achieved with the new tools, materials and effects on LBP2.
The result has surpassed all expectations and is not only the best Star Wars level I've seen but one of the best levels full stop.
Combining a real passion for the theme with great gameplay varied sections and witty narrative makes for a flowing epic space opera level.
So many highlights right from the start, the top down land speeder vehicle section (done with a confident sense of scale). The bar fight and platforming race to the milenium falcon all really attuned to the film source material. In many ways this level is like an interactive movie, so much better than all those half assed movie levels which don't engage the play at all. A real jedi master of a creator!

Actually, I have a question around the land speeder section. What type of logic/placement do you have in regards to score bubbles and where the player is located?

I noticed that you can still get a natural multiplier while driving it.

Nothing complicated there, each bubble has a sensor that triggers it when in close range of the player (or it might actually be triggered by the speeder itself, not sure). Is that what you meant?

Another great Star Wars level from Julesyjules.

VISUALS:
The bird's eye view of the Land Speeder part looks breathtaking, and the Mos Eisley scenery looks really cool. The sackbots like Obi-Wan Kenobi, hologram Leia, and Chewbacca are awesome, too.

SOUND:
Great variety of musics.

GAMEPLAY:
The Land Speeder part is well done, but for some reason one of the engines broke and the movement seems to be a bit rough. The Mos Eisley part, on the other hand, has great creatinator and grabinator usage and clever Stormtrooper chase.

OVERALL:
This level has excellent gameplay and Star Wars remake story. A , a <3, and a positive review. Looking forward to part 3 just as long as the Death Star doesn't destroy our planet.

Utterly brilliant. Fitting mini-games towards the scene.

I just remembered Jedi's level in the beta; based around moving the sixaxis controller for movement of the Force - perhaps you can put that to use?

Yeah... but in my stage the bubble is collected by the car and it won't build up a multiplier. Maybe because I set up a score giver also. Anyway I built my own multiplier logic for the stage and had taken a break from testing it when I played this and its the first thing I noticed. The points are collected by the sackperson, so the score is also the colour of the player collecting them. In mine they are white.

Yeh, there's loads of potential there, but that stuff doesnt really come into play till Dagobah, and I'm still on the fence about what to do with the LBP levels.

That changed, lol. It's almost playable now.

I'm writing this as I speak and look, I found one glitch:
I used that bounce pad creatinator to get out of the start area, after the message from R2. I went to the wall, placed them, jumped and placed them again as I jumped, going higher and ended up on the other side. Maybe some roof would be adequate?

Apart from that it was jolly good to play, I always love the LBPizing of everything! Nice use of the 3D layer glitch as well, I did not know you could put sackbots in the layer either? Really cool anyway Can't wait for the next level!

Wait.. is this a shameless promotion of a level by the one and only julesyjules?

..lol.. sorry.. a particular thread has me amused right now.

So cool this is done jules, I have my PS3 still plugged in so I will try and play it before I yank the cable and stuff it all in a box!!

Wish lbp.me was working so I could just add it to my horribly huge queue!!!

Played this last night and loved it. Great costumes, amazing deep sets of Mos Eisley and clever camera work and special effects had me glued to the TV the whole time I was playing.

The land speeder section I thought was cute and the details like the roped up Bantha and Sandpeople were great. I managed to break it with three players though. I drove the land speeder up off screen and couldn't get it back down in time before I timed out since another player "owned" the camera. You probably have 1x warnings on it but I figured you'd want to know this can happen.

The hologram with Leia was awesome! Great camera work and visuals were top notch in that area. (FYI you can slap her away from the end of the holo though which sort of ruins the illusion - maybe a material tweaker on her so she's ungrabbable?)

Another issue I found was that in the area where you jump bottles, if you keep the grabinators from the area on the left, you can grab the bartender and toss him in the air where he will float (Guessing he has an anitgrav on him?)

Found the layer shifting down into the tube after the plasmified ball that moves left and right was a bit tricky too. I kept popping forward a layer and getting zapped on the floor.

The area with the Millenium Falcon and the flight out of the atmosphere was amazing too. Put a big smile on my face when it went to light speed.

So ya, minor issues I found (probably not worth fixing) but overall a wonderful level to play. Hearted & smilies all around! Really looking forward to the next one from the teaser you set up with Leia.

Thanks Morgana, I'll look into those over the weekend..

The Leia thing I don't get at all, there's (meant to be) a solid wall of electrified plasma between you and her, so I'll definitely double check on that. The de-power up must have been jumped over, you raised a bit more hell there than you were supposed to, lol. The tube thing, yeh, thats not on, I'll sort that somehow. I've played this thing to death and the bugs just keep on coming. Yay me. : /

I can't believe I missed the release of this. Your Star Wars levels are my favorite series in LBP.... I always look forward to a new one.

Anyway, top notch as usual - loved the beginning non-platforming, and the visuals are fantastic. Sorry I missed the release, but it got a big happy face and a heart from me.
