Should object demonstration levels be made?

Archive: 9 posts

What I am wondering is how the community feels about object demonstration levels. The idea behind these things is that the creator has made a complex and/or highly detailed object, but has yet to implement it into a full level.

There are a few options with what to do with these things:

1. Create a bare bones level that showcases the object. It's not meant to have a complex story or depth to it, it's meant to just show what the object is or does. Things like background art and platforming precision are not high priorities. The aim behind this is just to show the object in a functional way with a minimum amount of fuss to the creator. Anyone would be able to access this "level".

2. Use a closed beta idea. Only a handful of people would have access to these bare bones levels, either through level keys earned from other levels the creator has made, through level keys the creator gives out to their friends, or through things like the pass key system that Gilgamesh has demonstrated. The idea is that the people who access this level know it's meant to be limited. They are not expecting a fully fledged thing.

3. Wait until the object can be used in a more fully fleshed out level. It could be a level that focuses on the object, or the object might be just one part of a larger concept. The problem with this is that advanced and complex objects might take a while before the general public can see them, but when they do, they will be in a place which makes sense and has high production values, as opposed to the bare bones earlier ideas described before.

Let me start things off with my own initial thoughts on the matter. It's kind of a side point, but it might start off the discussion.

Some people are better at object creation than level design. Having object demonstrations frees up the people who are good at just object creation to focus on this area, leaving their creations to be implemented by other people who are better at this.

But a negative of this point is that if you go down the path of just an object creator, your objects could be poorly implemented and you may not be given credit for your hard work. To some this is not an issue, to others it is. How one gives out said objects is another matter for another discussion, however.
So what do people think? Which is the best idea to use? Vote in the poll and discuss.

I think that you should display your object in its intended use, not only is it the best way to showcase an object but it also contributes to the community with an actual level, not one of those silly costume/music/trophy levels that clog up our beautiful game so much.

For me the whole point in LBP is having a go and getting what is in your mind up for the world to see. You could take a picture and describe an object on a forum, I want to play levels and appreciate the work of other people rather than be shown something one off, if that makes any sense.

I think they should be placed in a level when possible. At worst, if you can't find a good use for the object you've created, you can simply give it out as a hidden prize in an unrelated level.

Most objects are a lot easier to create than a full fledged level. Any dedicated creator will have at least ten times more objects created than levels, and that would make a lot of clutter to put out on the community.

The other problem I see is that without using your own objects, you may be missing out on some glaring bugs and odd behaviors. You might make the most amazing boss ever created... and not realize that Sackboy can't jump high enough to reach the boss to kill it :hero:

Of course, this shouldn't be confused with people who make an object specifically for someone else to use. In that case, I think a passkey-locked level is the best solution.

I go both ways on this. It depends on how useful the object is.

Here's an example: A set of logic gate switches. These objects are immediately useful in a lot of situations. Set up a demo map and give those away.

Here's another: A vehicle. For this, I think it'd be best to have it in a level, because it's only useful in a small set of situations and within a specific theme.

If you're making an object specifically for someone else to use, just send it to them via PSN.

I think Object Showcases are a great thing
The beauty of LBP is it's potential diversity and not everything HAS to be a level. Sometimes it's just as satisfying to see something amazing that has been made with the tools.
Just look at the calculator that some dude made as a good example
Absolutely useless really as no one is gonna go on LBP just to use a calculator when they can just use a regular one or your PC, but it was amazing nether the less.
I used to love this game called Phun and youtube was filled with things like this and has many similarities with LBP

Here's just one that I remember

There should be a separate planet to show off objects, vehicles etc that people have made in game in my opinion. Im best at making just stuff, rather then full on levels, so i would love this feature.2008-12-08 20:12:00

I've played through your object demonstration for the infinite check point system, snowflakecat. Although it was very short and basically was there to show the principle in action, it did not feel unprofessional or empty by any means.

My current thoughts on the matter, especially in seeing what snowflakecat did, was that they definitely have their place. Still though, on reflection, it feels like snow's level would have taken a tonne of effort to actually do. I guess it's that balance between showing off an object while having good production values. Too high a production and it could (potentially) be a waste of time. Too low and why would anyone bother to check it out?

I'm having a short break from create mode now that my full level is out, but maybe I'll go back to the TSR and flesh it out enough that it's more than just showing yet another rocket.

need one for "who cares?"

But seriously folks, there's no option for "this poll is pointless" And that's my choice.
