Need help with bicycle rotation!

Archive: 9 posts

Hi everyone, I'm creating a level titled Tour de Monde: A Cycling Adventure (Translates to Tour of the World). The premise is you are competing in a cycling race against your friends, or alone, and you cycle through loads of environments. The gameplay is top down and I have created a realistic bicycle using decorations on a 1-plane-thick piece of invisible hologram.

I'm having some difficulty animating the bicycle's wheel. I want to make the front wheel turn left and right when I move the left stick left and right (which I have done already using a directional input), but I also want the wheel to reset to the forward position when you aren't turning. Is there a way to complete this?

I am extremely unaccustomed to direction splitters/combiners, so I'm convinced the solution lies in those. Can any of you LittleBigGeniuses help me?

Thanks for reading,

How does the player move forward? If you're using the left stick you could probably use the joystick rotator to get that effect on the front wheel.

invite me, we will do it. i'm on now.

alright, i'll invite you.

well, we fixed the original problem, but a new one has arisen! whenever you hold left and right, the bike rotates left and right. BUT, if you baaaaaaaarely hold left, the bike rotates right! i think this is because the rotator doesn't pick up that it is a left output, not right. any help?

To add to that, I even tried splitting the signal and bringing back together before the advanced rotator. I have no idea why it was going to the right when you push left. It was happening to both of us, so it wasn't a controller issue.

The signal is also going through an AND gate before reaching the rotator, as we didn't want the bike to rotate while not moving forward or backward.

One more thing! Is there an way for an impact sensor on a hologram to activate if the hologram hits a solid? D:2011-05-27 23:25:00

The AND gate is the problem...the reason being something like 1 input to the AND is your % signal from the controllinator...and the other input is effectively a 100% signal, this biases the directional signal send to the rotator to one particular side. You might want to watch comph's videos on doing signal math and the flickering lights application one...they really helped me.

Yes, this should just work...I don't think you even need to enable "inclide touching" for this case.

I had a feeling the AND gate was the culprit, that's why I thought it was worth mentioning... I just couldn't remember why. Thanks!

@nunsmasher - I think we just need to put two AND gates BEFORE the direction combiner, then take that output straight to the rotator. That should fix it. I can't believe I didn't think to try that before! lol

good luck, hope you get it.

well, my great friend a_mailbox joined me and, being the logic whiz that he is, fixed everything up! now, shane, if you ever want to join again, we can work on the menu and environments without worrying about the stupid bike!2011-05-28 05:34:00
