Wait, if the YLOD is an overheating or short-circuit, I think that it's unlikely for an update to cause these problems. What might be happening is that, with the PSN back on, people are overusing their PS3s and they are overheating.

Unless a system bug can directly cause the YLOD, i'm not believing.

Fun time reading the comments: "I had my Fat PS3 for 4 years and now it YLODs!!!"

Well, if you have a fat one and it is more than 3 years old, the YLOD shouldn't take long...

Well, PS3s YLOD every day. The difference is that they have something to put the blame on now. And after every major update.2011-05-27 19:46:00

Nice theory, but I don't think it'd be from the YLOD, I mean here's the facts here; First of all, the YLOD is caused by gaming for more then 6 hours straight without at least an hour cooldown period afterwards is a no-no many of the components in the PS3 are plastic and they tend to warp with too much heat. Also too much heat tends to evaporate and remove the grease that keeps the moving parts moving and without that grease these parts get stuck and cease to function. Now if you have a cooling unit attached then yes you can game for longer then 6 hours safely as it adds alot more cool air into the system.

The second thing that could eventually lead to a YLOD or breakdown is how you turn off your system, and how many times you've lost power while playing. I've noticed that if you just shut the system off while still in game the system has a tendancy to lock up and give 2 rapid beeps indicating that it has encountered an error. However if you exit to XMB and then turn off system from the XMB this doesnt happen. Also if you lose power while playing or just turn off the power from the switch on the back while still in game this can burn out you Blu-Ray Drive as the laser will freeze into position where it is and not return to its default position. If it does this once too often it will begin to think that it is already IN the default position and will start to give read errors on Discs. The YLOD is simply caused by over-heating. From my personal point of view, I don't think an Update could cause the YLOD.

OH MY GOSH!
They activated the tiny bombs they placed on all PS3's to gi e them YLoD and we have to buy new PS3s, noooooooo!
Darn you SONY Darn you all to heck!!!

Anyways, this is, what, the 5th time an update causes those little bombs to blow up inside everyone's PS3's?
Yeah, completely throw out the window any possibilities of being completely coincidental and jump to conclusions, THAT is what's to do in these cases, right?

I mean, its not like they PS3's were off more than usual while PSN was down and then were over-worked again once PSN was back up, thus increasing the chances of this happening, thus not really being the update's fault, but the owner's fault, right?

This was already proven to be a false rumor like a week ago. Rockstar said it was the firmware's fault, Sony said it was L.A. Noire, then they made a joint statement saying it wasn't either.2011-05-27 21:24:00

I think that the ps3 system is just badly built in general. Ever since I've had my ps3 its crashed. Day one on Christmas day I played it for an hour, I was going through the on game options and all of a sudden the control ceased to work, ps button did nothing, all I could do is turn it off, and as sack girl said, the screen goes black for a few seconds untill you hear a few beeps. Mine has done this so many times I've actually lost count. I don't play it anywhere near the 6 hour mark and it still does it. The last time it happened was the other day, I went to play resistance 2 online, I clicked join, the loading screen came on, then BLACK SCREEN, nothing worked, the only reason I knew it had crashed cos the ps button didn't work again.

I think if the new system update was causing the YLOD then it would of happened to a lot more people than it's actually happened to. They don't just release any old thing without testing everything first, they would of ran a lot of tests to see what (if anything) it would of caused problems with.

I suppose it is a little coincidental, but reading up the other week about psp's breaking, I read a lot of users saying that they hadn't played their psp's for months or even years, then go to play then and they don't turn on at all and appear to be bricked. They tried charging and it doesn't charger with or without the battery. It might just be one of those things that happens and your just unlucky that its so happened to you.

Well it wasnt just me. Did you go to those links i put up? Its alot of people. But I actually expected my PS3 to die soon anyway but ive read stuff thats saying the update causes the PS3 to overheat quicker

Yeah I read those links to, some of the people were blaiming new rockstar games. I can see that crashing your ps3 because I must admit, uncharted 2 seems to crash my ps3 sometimes, but if you don't get it seen to then you'll never know. It might just be dodgey hardware.2011-05-27 22:19:00

Well, mine yellow lighted when I was playing Black Ops.

I've had my fat one for 3 years now, so I'm sure it just went out.
Probably the majority of YLOD's are from fat PS3's 3 yrs old or more, but that's what I would think.

I had a dream last night that mine yellow lighted to, weird huh? If I go on later and it doesn't come on, I'm going to be FREAKED out.

edit:.... no It's just me being paranoid, my mams actually playing the original Tomb Raider on it, right now.

After the update, my PS3 crashed twice while playing Bad Company 2. But that's probably because while PSN was down, my PS3 was off for most of the time
I think it's just a coincidence

Btw, xQziCyFlaMeZxQz, you've yet to mention, how old was your PS3 when it YLoD'd?
Is it the Old PS3 or Slim PS3?
How many and which precautions did you take to ensure the longevity of your PS3?

Seems you fogot to imput those rather important details there, dude...
