How should I build my level!?
Archive: 8 posts
So im working on that LBPC1 challenge, and I have one question. How long does it take to make a GOOD level? I don't know if Im at a good pace! I know this question varies, but Im specifically asking those who can actually make good levels. I would like to know how you good creators can make such good levelswith such detail and still have termo room! All in all, Im just wondering about how to keep a good balance in my level. Should I plan out the level, or should I just build whatever I feel like? Tell me how you build levels! I need to get this done, but it needs to be amazing! P.S., I know this is a pretty vauge question with different answers, I just need some tips | 2011-05-26 15:08:00 Author: nk827 Posts: 193 |
Definitely plan it out. I thought about entering but I know I'll probably never finish it so I won't enter. Also take your time and pay attention to detail in your level. Even if you can't interact with it, still make it look useable. | 2011-05-26 17:01:00 Author: donta133 Posts: 182 |
Plan. Get a motif or a theme. Create your level on paper in sections or short segments, then re-assemble them into an orderly fashion. Does your level have story? Does it need one? What materials are you using? What kind of atmosphere and mood are you trying to go for? Any exciting or innovative concepts in your level? Build. Implement your level in the game. See what works. See what doesn't. Test. Test some more. Test again. Have your friends test. Fix. Respond to feedback positively. Listen to suggestions. Modify and tweak. When you're ready, publish. I've drawn my level out before, but the segments thing is a good Idea. I'll try that! I already know the basics of level building, so i don't need help there. | 2011-05-26 18:52:00 Author: nk827 Posts: 193 |
I personally never plan my levels out, I wing it adding plots, decorations, and music as I build the level. BTW the thermo is a problem all great creators have. | 2011-05-27 23:09:00 Author: fireblitz95 Posts: 2018 |
It is so worth it to check this out: It is for littile Big Planet 1, but all the tips apply for LBP2 EDIT: If you dont have time for all of it, it has a quick review at the end. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wouW9v3A_Ng There are many ways. Two ways that I think helps is to go through and make the whole level out of a simple materal like cardboard or wood. Then, you apply your theme by adding all the things that make it look good. Or you can make a section of your level, then go back and add in everything. Useing this method, you can make it look the way you want, then you get an idea how thrmo frendly your level would be, and how long. If you use the first one, then it forces you to spread all the decorations through the level. You can still get your level to look good, but you might not get all the detail you would like, but i think its better then to stop the level too soon. Just go at your pace, you will do fine. | 2011-05-28 01:54:00 Author: Unknown User |
Another thing to keep in mind as you create. Do you want to share any objects? If so; make sure they are worth sharing... don't jam in 10 unnamed objects that are in essence easily re-creatable by anyone. Name captured objects and consider the repercussions of putting DLC on them, not everyone has every pack so how accessible do you want your objects. Also by putting them a little off the main path can help people avoid them if they choose, doing this as part of the initial level design means that any objects sit in well thought out places not just in a heap at the end. | 2011-05-28 12:18:00 Author: Mr_Fusion Posts: 1799 |
I always plan out my levels on paper first, but 9/10 times I end up changing it (for the better) when I start to create it ingame. How long you should spend really depends on too many things to list. Personally I've spent over 160 hours on my latest level project, but I am a perfectionist and often spend stupidly large amounts of time on extremely tiny details that are (in the grand scheme of things) pretty insignificant. My one major piece of advice that I'd give to any creater is to test, test and test some more. You only get one first impression, and although you can update your level, you should try to make just about as **** perfect as possible first time round. | 2011-05-28 19:25:00 Author: DaSpoony Posts: 191 |
