Portal 2: A review

Archive: 3 posts

Hello and Welcome to my new feature. Here i'll be telling you what games you should play, new or old. I'll be reviewing different aspects of each game. So, lets get started...

Why not play...

For those of you who don't know, Portal is a game about Apeture Science Labs, you carry around a Portal gun-that fires connecting Portals, which are used to solve various test chambers.

SinglePlayer:

The story picks up a few years after the original Portal, the labs are in disrepair, and you have been a sleep for the duration. Unlike the first instalment, Portal 2 features test chambers that are falling apart compared to the spick-and-span chambers of Portal 1. Half way through there is a MAJOR twist, but i'll let you find that one out for yourselves.

The vast singleplayer GLaDos makes a return, along with a new character; Wheatley, voiced by Stephen Merchant. His voice over really adds to the charm of Portal 2, like the original, it is a very funny dialogue and worth playing just to hear the insults of GLaDos and the remarks of Wheatley. The story is much longer than the original, and will roughly take an experienced player little over 5 hours, although if your new to this experience, it could take you 10 hours +, depending on how quickly you can grasp the concept.

New gameplay mechanics really add to the story and prevent experienced players feeling like it's just more of the same. Excursion funnels, Repulsion Gel and Aerial Faithplates really add to the fun-and when all these start to combine the gameplay really starts to become mad..but in a good way.

One of the best parts from the last game was GLaDos' little song over the credits, and she's back! However this one isn't as good as the last. Here they are, give me your opinion on which one you like best:

Co-Op:
This is where Portal 2, really does stand out! It picks up from where the single player story finishes, but you don't need to have completed that to know what's going on in the Co-Op. Portal 2s' Co-Op really is a Co-Op, there does actually have to be some form of communication to work out the puzzles, unlike many previous claims from games being 'Co-Op'.

Yet again, the dialogue is hilarious, although there is no Wheatley in the Co-Op, GLaDos is just as good by herself as she tries to pitch you against your buddy. The Co-Op story is a lot more fun if you play with an actual friend, but you can still partner up with the a stranger. For people who buy the PS3 version we get a free copy of Portal 2 to download on to our PC or Mac via Steam. Also, the Steam integration allows players on PS3 to play alongside computer users.

Overall Portal 2 is a brilliant game. The voice-acting, the new gameplay mechanics and the general fact that is game isn't taking it's self too seriously makes it a winner, and. in my opinion, one of the Top 5 games to released so far this year.

Rating: 9.5

I'd give it an 8.0.
The gameplay, dialogue, soundtrack and atmosphere are all very good, but it's far too easy. I feel it was catered to casual players.
also, want you gone > still alive.. inb4 rage

I can agree with a 9.5
It was probably the best game I have ever bought other than LBP2
