How to high jump?

Archive: 14 posts

I'm at the end of Year9/8th grade and I have no idea how to high jump. Never done it in my life. And for some reason I'm down for high jump at sports day which is less than a month away and I have no idea what the hell to do? I actually want to give it a shot but I'm clueless... :/2011-05-24 22:48:00

I'm sure there must be a zillion videos on youtube. I haven't done a highjump since I was your age, but if I remember correctly:

Run to the bar at a very oblique angle. You almost want to run parallel to it, but just enough forward momentum to carry you over when you jump.

Jumpe, lifting the leg closest to the bar first, and aim to get your shoulders over. Basically you want to kind of curl backwards over the bar (this means you have to get your body less high in the air than if you were trying to get your whole body to clear the bar at once). Land on the poofy mat on your back.

whoa.......that's awesome. You must go to a good school then if you have all that equipment. I wish my school was a good school ;_; Actually no, my school is a good school. Every school is. It's just the darn students that don't care -.- (or something is interrupting them from learning I know ) and sometimes the teachers 2011-05-25 01:56:00

The guy in that video runs at it headlong. o_o

I only remember doing this a few times at school but you have to sort of twist yourself over the bar backwards. It's easier just to do it than have someone explain it to you. Don't remember it being any higher than shoulder-height though...

If you ask one of your nicer PE teachers whether you can practice during lunch or whatever I'm sure they'd be happy that you've taken the initiative to ask and to try and improve yourself. It's not like the mat and frame/bar takes ages to set up or anything.

If you know what you're looking for.

I'm not athletic, not tall, not slim, but I'm quite strong and can hurdle like Chuck Norris... will that translate well to high jump? 2011-05-27 22:01:00

haha you could always be alternative and instead of using your legs, just do a massive handstand and push yourself off the floor really hard so that you can make it over the bar, haha 2011-05-27 22:04:00

I'm not the best at showmanship, it'll just be an epic fail and probably be uploaded onto youtube. :L2011-05-27 22:05:00

haa whenever I hear 'high jump', I always remember this girl who was in my class who was TINY, but they still made her do it. The smallest height, which everyone could jump, she couldn't. It was so funny when I play it back in my head, she didn't even attempt to jump it, if you picture yourself diving on your bed... that's what she did, but straight in to the bar, EVERY TIME haha.2011-05-27 22:10:00
