when you've made an object too complicated, how do I delete from it to make it usable agian. I can't delete or add parts, it just says the object has become too complicated

the best way that I found that helps is to turn the main part into a sponge and using bombs, distroy the parts you dont want. You might want to use the matearal tweaker set so it cant brake to save anything you still want.

Cut it in half by holding down the triangle button. Each part should become editable.

I think you can cut a shape right through it as long as the end result makes the object less complicated. Just a one slit cut, not a bit-by-bit cut. If that does not work, try duplicating the object, draw a 3-layered square over it and eliminate half of each object. Works reliably when used with grid turned on.

I mean with a material selected from the poppet! You can use it as a cutting tool with triangle instead of placing it with x.
