MUSIC SHOWCASE LEVEL!

http://lbp.me/v/2b40rf

Please note that the level above is NOT a beta, and the only parts of it that will show on the finished project is Music and graphics, NOT gameplay.

Spread the word of this project!
We want it to be a huge success!

I would love to help but im working on a huge project right now but if planning falls through and I give up I will help you with this, and btw when making large ammounts of logic you should make catergories with seperate microchips. It reduces the lag created by the wires and everything.2011-05-19 00:58:00

I would love to help but im working on a huge project right now but if planning falls through and I give up I will help you with this, and btw when making large ammounts of logic you should make catergories with seperate microchips. It reduces the lag created by the wires and everything.
I fixed that issue by shrining the size of the Chip panel I was working on, and now it's nice and fast.
I finished making that logic piece, and after I finished my buddy (Guy who is doing logic) tells me I over complicated the whole thing, but "you are indeed a genius to go about it this way".

I did not know I could name my Colored tags so that I have more then just 8 tags. So what i did was I used 8 tags, 100 (I counted) And gates, and linked them up in a combination (Not permutation, a permutation means oder matters, combination means oder does NOT matter) that sent them from 8 tags, to 70 different and unique numbers, and then i can link each Minecraft Block to one of the 70 ID numbers I had.... It is a very cool chip I made, but not very practical now that I know of the easy way I may make a level show casing logic I make when i make more.

So far the level looks great, but it is quite time consuming and hard to make each block have a unique logic chip.

Whoa, those pictures are almost exactly what's in Minecraft. It's scary close.

I hope you can get some help on this. I would help but I'm not really a maniac at logic. Not compared to other people at least. And music...not my strong point. Barely even a point.

Can't wait to see this happen. 1st person prob won't work, since that only gives you 3 layer depth, and the cam needs to be on the top layer to work afaik.

As for day/night cycle, I'm fairly certain you can just use 2 global lighting tweakers, each with very long transition times. It 'should' (I dunno though, never tried) make it appear as if the sun/shadows are changing as if time is actually progressing. One for day->night, one for night->day (and another for the underworld?).

For inventory/smelting/crafting...this will eat up your entire level. You'd need a code for each material/item (which it appears you already have), and an incredible amount of logic for just the detection of which item is where in your inventory (70 different possibilities per slot.....lots of slots...not fun).

To simplify the inventory, make each slot its own dedicated item, so slot 1 is wood, slot 2 is stone, etc.. That will save quite a lot on the thermo.

Smelting should be pretty simple, since there are only a few things you need to detect. Crafting though, should start off limited with just wooden equipment and basic materials.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips, we have decided that the inventory would have pre-asigned spots for each block early in dev, the amount of organizational options you get is basically what is on the onscreen inventory UI.

The way inventory will work should be about as follows

The player presses the Square button to open their Inventory, on the 9X3 inventory screen will have the placable blocks they have collected.
When they press r1 or L1 in the menu it toggles between items and blocks.
When the player press X in a slot on their 1X9 inventory they will have a selection mark go to the 3X9 inventory, selecting an item/block will add it to the spot they had selected in their 3X9 inventory spot.
Exit the menu and use the D-pad left/right to move your mini inventory selection and press L1 to have a ghost block pop up, when you use the D-pad in this state it will move the block to above or to the side of the player, press L1 again and the block/item is placed/used in the spot the ghost block was at.

As for the day/night, good idea, I should do more with shadows
The true issue I am having there is to have the rain and thunderstorms work correctly and smoothly yet still be random.

@Above Posts:
I will put you 2 on the locked beta when we have a working lvl.
It will most likely only be for up to 2 players though due to complexity and HUDs hitting each-other.

So your HUDs are not made from hologram I assume? I mean it obviously doesn't look like it is.

Yeah, the hologram looks bad with these Menus and HUDs.
I also just finished talking to my logic buddy and when we where making some things for lighting, we came to a sad decision, that until we find a way to get each player their own lighting its either no underground lighting, or no multiplayer.... We will debate the issue to see what we can do on the matter.

Why? Does it matter that players can see the others lights?

Because we don't want a player on the surface to have a black screen cause of someone underground, and Vice versa. I will try a few things I thought up that may work...2011-06-27 08:46:00

for the inventory it doesnt necessarily need all of those slots for each thing it could be where a cursor or if in play mode a predetermined slot has a magnet key on it and the objects emitted have a follower to that (made out of holo) and if no slots are open the the magnet key will go to the edge of the inventory (or you could make a trash bin for this) and when it gets there the object will be deleted. Not exactly the most minecrafty but it could work and as for 1-9 in the inventory you could mess around with that2011-06-27 09:00:00

Have you tried making the entire level 100% dark and just using massive lights to simulate daylight?

That would solve the depth issues, since they'd be further from the sky lights.

That is one of the things I was going to try out.
I think with shadows on it will work....

Another issue I am having with the level is trying to determine an appropriate map size, I was going to try 64 (Hight) by 128 (Width), but when I calculated that up that would mean about 3-4 THOUSAND blocks being in the level...

@ koltonaugust:
The way we are doing inventor is probably going to end up with pre-assigned slots and keeping the amount of collectible items down to 27.
I will bring that idea to my buddy though to see what we can get from it, thanks for your idea!

Hmm, @ map size:
Have you thought about trying out emitting each block that is close to the player.

That would mean an INCREDIBLE number of emitters, but since it's not physical, and wouldn't have any physics, it might make a large level doable.

Start off tiny, make everything, and then expand the level size to fill the thermo. I'd rather play a very small completely functional game than a very large game with only half the capabilities. Quality over quantity?

I was thinking the same thing... Agian!
We think allot alike SSTAGG1.

I tested the lights, and it looks as though the closer my camera is to the map the lights start acting funny, good thing I am going to be using large sackbots for players with a fairly big zoom.

Thanks for all the pointers SSTAGG1!

For any of those interested in this project, we have a Music showcase level out now!

This music show case features 3 Minecraft songs, one of them was removed from Minecraft but will be in this level!

Level design by me (Volcanicthor) Music by Destroyer5563!

http://lbp.me/v/2b40rf

Spread the word!

Note:
This is purely a music level and not a demo, the actual level will have many more features.
The only things this level shares with the actual level is graphics and music, NOT game-play.

Good luck with the emitting system. I tested a Minecrat-like emission system, and my game began to freeze up at about 15 blocks. Maybe, if you used large-grid cubes and you set the level zoom to very small, then emitted the world in chunks near the player.2011-07-01 15:42:00

I swear, I thought you photoshopped those images! Fantastic work, man! Will there be a way to equip armor? Maybe it could just add defenses to your health, and not show anything on the actual character, but it would be cool if you could implement different clothing!2011-07-05 20:38:00

Yes, we will try to add in armor.
Might not be in the first release, but maybe in an update!
However, the armor will be auto placed in the armor slot and equipped.

I could help out with some of the designs. I played the level. and it gave me the idea to make some stuff. I just made a few swords and a HUD.

If you want to see some of the things Im making, I can get an image. I also had made some of the materials awhile back.

Edit:
Actually if your anything like me, People telling you they can help might aggrivate you a bit, and from the screens you dont look like you need any of my help with pixel stuff. But regardless, if you still want to see just let me know.

I think we can finish the level with just us few people, but we can never have too many testers.

Jayano (logic) is away on a vacation for awhile so no progress has been made until he gets back.

Just have to get grass, crafting, Inventory, furnace, and Placing blocks done.

We are also doing a re-do on the way players smash blocks (no more grabbing), because we made a nice thing for it.

Also, Dymus is right, we where just joking around how our roles fit those of Jeb_, C418, and notch.

Oh man... Its been awhile since I got a chance to work on this project, I feel really bad for not getting around to it.... But with the Move pack out and everything, I have done a bit more work!

We re-worked ALL the blocks into pixels so the blocks now look EXACTLY like they do In Minecraft!!!
And re also touched up the music with the new music items.
But now we have hit some other issues, such as collision detection with hologram...
Also we have a pixel Steve character!

This project has gotten a bit overwhelming, and I also started up another project and that's almost just as hard as this...
I would like to get another person to help out with this project, we need someone who is good with logic and that could help us with the collision problem we have.
