Puzzle Beleaguered

Archive: 3 posts

Once upon a time, there was Tetris. Mankind played it, and declared that it was good.
Then, there were clones.
Many, many clones.

And mankind looked upon what it had wrought, and wondered What Happened to Originality.
Some of the people, well, they went on to clone Street Fighter Instead.
But the hardcore of us knew there was really only One Game;
All the others were mere shadows of it. Even if they didn't have blocks.
Variants upon endless variants were spawned.
Some abandoned squares for hexagons.
Some experimented with "The Three Dee".
But eventually, someone had The Insight;
It could be fun to play the game against somebody.
It was a new era. It was TETRIS ATTACK.

Hello, all. My level concept resurrects Nintendo's greatest triumph: The Puzzle League.

Founded on the simple precepts of color matching and gravity, this easy-to-learn survival challenge pits two people against each other as they align groups of 3 or more identical blocks, in a rising grid of blocks. Doing so removes the blocks from the play field, causing any objects piled above to drop. Matching more than 3 at a time triggers a rain of "garbage" on the hapless opponent beside you, who will be attempting to counter your efforts with combinations of his or her own.

Playing a solo game is a great way to get a feel for the play, and put out the trash.

Throwing garbage at other people ... is that legal? If you find yourself on the receiving end of a trash shower, show your disdain by catapulting it right back at them! Lining up colored blocks adjacent to the garbage will cause the junk to "pop", breaking it down into colored blocks, which will likely burst in newly formed lines. There's no vengeance like come-uppance, eh?

Controls:
- The directional pad, or the joystick, moves your cursor up, down, left, and right, in a rising 6x15 grid.
- The X button swaps the positions of the two colored blocks that are framed by the cursor.
- R1 will cause the playfield to rise temporarily faster, providing more ammunition for Combo Attacks.

Keep your eye out for "exclamation mark blocks", metallic chunks that, when grouped, send an avalanche of Steel down on your foe. Steel does not recycle as easily as regular garbage ...

Special Message to Avid "Block Heads"

If you like the level concept enough to want to contribute, thank you much. I could use some help up front with the recreation of the game's original music. (I've completed the melody for Yoshi's World (http://gh.ffshrine.org/song/3839/1), and most of the melody for Moon World (http://gh.ffshrine.org/song/3839/23). These were quite the undertaking, alone!) I'm also looking for some of the 'dressing': creation of the main menu (has items like: 1vs1, tutorial, time trial, and sound test), addition of sound effects, border art. These can be done without access to the Level Copy.

The Level Copy itself will be opened as a 'qualified prize' when I put some effort into this. In the original Tetris Attack, creation of a Giant T of Exclamation would cause your character to roar so loud its voice would echo. Giving someone the key to my kingdom seems a worthy reward for pulling this feat off today.

Good day, sir. Firstly, this is amazing! Panel de Pon and its Nintendo clones are my favorite puzzle/vs games, and as soon as I saw what lbp2 was capable of I thought of this! I tried it out and got stuck at making two blocks move together, but I have since been learning how to effectively use logic, and seeing this has reignited my desire to recreate this addictive game. I see this post is pretty old; how did the game turn out?2012-11-14 22:04:00
