LBP Cinema Reviews! # 1
"Figment [50 minute movie]" by ladylyn1 http://lbp.me/v/09-wez
Genre-Horror/Thriller (Although their is a lot of mystery)
Run Time-48 minutes

Movies in LBP are often regarded as something silly and not a serious media (by LBP standards anyways). They are never really treated with the same kind of respect you'd give a regular movie. This however is. Words can not describe the amazement of this movie.

7/31932, The day Charles wife Charlotte was murdered by an unknown figure.
In the movie you follow Charles, a detective, as he tries to find the murderer of his wife Charlotte. He suffers from some split personality disorder. Throughout the movie you find other characters but through most of the movie it's just Charles and another detective he knows as John Fisher. The movie keeps you interested to find out who the murderer is and while you have suspicions you never fully suspect who the murderer is. Throughout the movie Charles has flashbacks and visions of things happening due to his disorder. It's a very serious movie that maintains a dark tone and never has any of the silly charm that LBP is known for.

This movie's "camera" work is spectactular. Near the beginning your reaction is "Oh my god this is so impressive" but by the end your caught up in the story and atmosphere. It's a horror/thriller movie as called by the creator, and it sure keeps that tone. I found myself going "Ah!" during certain moments. There is some action (and by some I mean 1 scene) and it's very thrilling and has great effects. You can tell the creators were serious about this project. The music is fantastic and very fitting, using a few custom pieces as well as the official music.

By far the best part of the movie is a montage near the end. The piano music mixed with the events going on piece many things that were building up to that moment and It's unbelievable.

As far as bad things, there are very few. One thing I found odd was that the protagonist Charles's voice actor was only voicing Charles most of the time, Sometimes he switches to using word bubbles out of nowhere which can be a little disorienting and I think it would've benefited from having the other characters being voice acted as Charles is the only voiced character. The movie moves at a pretty slow pace, especially near the beginning. Near the end I was very interested though.

But these minor blemishes aside it's an incredible, interesting, gripping movie.
I think that finally movies in LBP can be treated greater respect then the common "Random Clips" all the time.
I am very proud to say that Figment is the Citizen Kane of LBP Cinema.

I think as long as 'serious' movies are largely ignored by most users here and the LBP community at large, (unless it is Mm picked of course) anyone trying to push the boundaries in this as a form of media will sooner or later give up and walk away.

(no degeneration implied to ladylyns film, I have a lot of respect for him as a creator)

Not if we all join together and make a great film. Im all for this project, film will become a main factor in the community. The thing that dragged people to the level was the 'Feutre Length' promise.2011-06-22 16:46:00

Actually allow me to expand, that was a bit terse!

I have published several 'serious' films, i'm probably proudest of 'Losing Things', which stands at less than 2,000 plays after a few months. I can get way more than that by simply putting 'Funny Film' in the title, indeed a short joke co-created with leklack got more than that in one day. I have published two shakespeare movies clips, and a further serious drama 'The Day I Changed The World' (about 5,000 hits)

I produced a short skit on St Patricks Day that got 16,000 hits in one day.

NONE of my 'serious' films has drawn any attention on forums such as this, in fact I had given up even posting links on here. (ironically enough ladylyn strongly suggested I enter TDICTW in the movie competition here, which I did, to find the judges going crazy over Figment without even seeing what the competition is like from myself and others. (not having a go, just stating a fact that unless you're Mm picked one has very little hope of recieving a serious review for a serious project)

A friend of mine produced a 30 minute psychological drama, which has had about 700 hits, most of which he got because I published a short funny film with a link to his serious project at the end.

I appreciate that you do seem to be advocating the attempt for film makers to extend the possibilities of LBP, but perhaps seeking movies that haven't had the Mm spotlight on them would be more productive?

Here's a link to Stampys project, I'll include a link to mine as well, tho I would appreciate a review of Shattered Embrace by Stampy more, as his work genuinely deserves to be seen by those championing this cause.

ps sorry if my tone is a little 'harsh', but much as I admire ladylyn (and I do) it's kinda annoying to keep seeing 'at last a serious movie in LBP' etc, sorry!

EDIT: another ps, just thought maybe i should delete these as perhaps it should stay 'on-topic' about Figment only? Gonna have a bath I'll check when i get back, if peeps think i should delete I will

I never meant to offend anybody.
But sorry if you were by the whole "finally a serious thing then".
I never meant there weren't any serious movies, I just meant that the community at large would probobly appreciate them more because of figment.

Oh cheers for the review man, means a lot

Just to clear one thing up, the voiced phrases are for Charles' thoughts whereas the speech is only for spoken words.

Glad you enjoyed it and as MuddledMuppet said, other movies may be seious projects regardless of length. I suppose a serious project can be classed as anything with thought and time put into it.

Thanks again.
