A Wizard Did It: Chapter 1- http://lbp.me/v/0-mjn-

MMPICKED!

It wont let me post my level in the Level Showcase, so I'll stretch it by saying this is an ongoing series. WHich, it actually is.
http://i55.tinypic.com/fkmltw.jpg
Basically, in A Wizard Did It, you play as a wizard. I wont spoil the story for you but I'm reaching down tho fantasy roots here. Theres lots of fantasy-style humor and humorous characters, ranging from frat-boy White Knights to your own peers and others.

Your character has five spellbooks that each have three spells. You can switch between spellbooks and use the buttons for the spells. Each spellbook's spells operate on the same principle but with different effects- For instance, triangle with the Fire book equipped with unleash a flamethrower-like torrent, with the Ice book equipped it will emit a cone of freezing blizzard air, and doing it with the Wind book will unleashe a conical tornado that con throw objects around. Theres an area spell, the ones I just mentioned, a projectile that goes further and does more damage, but cant be cast as quickly, and a local spell that emits around you. This is the only spell that lets you move while casting.
http://i53.tinypic.com/szdis0.jpg
http://i52.tinypic.com/8wlz.jpg
They all have unique effects that can interact with their environment- For instance, the Ice projectile is an icicle that can stick to walls and provide you with a platform, allowing you to scale very tall obstacles, while the Blink spell operates similar to short-range teleportation. Still yet wind spells can turn cranks, move objects too heavy for you to manipulate, and throw enemies backwards, while acid spells can erode gunk from machinery and fire spells can burn ropes and melt ice. The platformaing and puzzle potential is immense and its not something I'm letting go to waste.

There are lots of enemies as well, from hippie elves with bows, nerdy evil mages who can resurrect zombies, huge cyclops ogres, and angsty vampires who insist the world simply doesnt "get" them. I'm taking a lighthearted approach to the game, in stark contrast to my previous entries that have been rather serious and overbearing from a plot perspective.

But not everything is out to kill you. There are friendly NPCs you'll meet out there too, specifically a certain wandering merchant totally not looking to pawn his overpriced goods off on you. Which brings me to items, there are five kinds, and you switch them like you do spellbooks. These will be quick access though, requiring only a push of a button to equip and use them on yourself in a time of need. Health potions, mana potions, magic mushrooms, chicken, and Runes of Invulnerability all make up the items you can use, and they all do something different.

Boy, dont those guys look familiar? WHoever can tell me who these characters are first get some thanks!

In addition there is a world map you will be returned to at the end of each level, and putting in the sticker for the latest level you have beaten will open the path to that area. I did my best to compensate for the fact that this system makes you go back to the first zone on the map each time you spawn by making the map entertaining to look at, so its not a bother to scroll across it.

Then theres the key level, where if, for some reason, when you beat the level you didnt get the level key, you can go in and get the key by putting the sticker up. I foresaw this as being an issue as soon as I realized that people would finish the level before I could get the next chapter up and thus while they would get the unlock sticker, there would be no key to get, so rather than force them to play the level a second time to get the key, tehres this little level where you can just put the sticker you have and get any key you have earned thus far.

Everything else I have made can be considered a precursor that has built up to this. Solace was a foray into logic, and where a lot of my knowledge regarding that was built. LOtW was my foray into advanced sackbotics, and a huge success ion that regard. Crimson Alnce was for physics and projectiles. This game- I dont say level, because this will transcend being a mere level- will bring everything I know about creating into one massive sidescrolling adventure that will take hours to fully complete from start to finish.

Oh, and you can select if you want to be a boy or a girl, and this will affect things in the game, particularly... Well, I won't spoil it for you.

Yes! Looks amazing and full of so much content... Although have you considered getting a bunch of hissy fitters saying things like "derp comphermic made the Wizard and its remotely, somewhat similar so you copied him."

I'm interested in all the spell books and how they are implemented into the combat and the story.

I will make a note of that, and somehow disable the second player.

ALso I have never played any of comphermic's levels. I'm not even sure who that is. Look at my activity on my profile and you will see I have never had any interaction with him or his levels.

Indeed it is. You saw it locked because you probably cuaght me as I was getting all the level links ready. Its unlocked now.

And the multiplayer issue is fixed. Now anyone that comes in with you is put into an observer seat where they are completely disabled. The only thing they can do is take pictures. Thats how it is, I stated it was single player in all caps.

Yo, that's me.

I got an Mm Pick for my Wizard level, but it's vastly different from what you've done here. The gameplay mechanics are very cool! I am hoping that you are able to create some more interesting environments in the coming levels - it will make the series awesome.

Yay'd and hearted. Congrats on the Mm Pick.

Fantasy roots bub. Next level is the Great Forest, that means elves, giant mushrooms, and lots and lots of trees. The scenery is going to be the biggest part. Then the Skybearer Mountains, snow covered mountains with lots of ice, maybe a yeti or two. Then the volcano where you fight the dragon. After that its the Dead Marshes, very dark and swampy, then the Catacombs, underground full of old machinery and of course Zombies the Necromancer has brought back, and then the Necromancer's Tower. The scenery will definitely be diverse.

And. What? MMpick?

Edit: OH MY GOD ITS MMPICKED!

I thought you guys might have been interpreting my rant wrong saying it already was, but no, it really happened! Oh my god, my happiness is overwhelming but its dawning on me that now that its MMpicked the pressure is cranked up to eleven. Now I HAVE to finish this second level! Not that I mind, I feel more than rejuvenated! Onward and upward!

Just played it. The MM pick is definitely deserved. Left a Yay, Heart, and review. I LOVED this level. The magic system has so much potential for puzzles, and I can't wait to see more of the series.2011-05-18 21:06:00

A few things I have experienced within these last few hours:
1: People will leave negative reviews or say the level broke, and leave a forwnie face, and when I go to their profile and ask them what exactly they didnt like or where the bug was, out of a sincere desire to improve the level, I get no response.
2: PLAY MY LEVEL
3: Crapflood of invites
4: Crapflood of friend requests
5: Happiness nonetheless

Is this normal? Especially that first one?

Oh yes, definitely. Enjoy the world of being popular, I hear it's not all it's cut out to be.

Ignore haters, they're just jealous you're a better creator then them.

I went through that. I gotta tell ya though. Don't chase down the frowns. Your gonna get plenty out of jealousy, plenty from people who just don't enjoy your type of level, and plenty for whatever reason. Just enjoy the feeling while it lasts. 2011-05-18 21:45:00

I played this earlier when I saw it had been MM Picked. I loved the different spells and how each one actually offers a unique element to the gameplay rather than just offering different attack types for combat, and the dialogue was witty and well done too. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole level although it took me some time to get used to not hitting L1, as I always use that to check my score and in your level it uses potions. Not saying that's a fault with your level in any way, just pointing out how your level managed to make me pay a bit more attention to something I normally do without consideration. Can't wait to see the things you come up with in the true levels (meaning those that aren't tutorial based like this one was) and with combat. The character designs were really good looking too just to finally add. 2011-05-18 22:13:00

I played it. Seems more like a Zelda kinda game. Using your tools to do puzzles and use them in battle. Im trying for more of a RPG battle system in my game. It has lots of diffrent ways to do damage.

Your Animations in your game pretty good.
Your over all gameplay system seem kinda slow when needing to switch spells.
I do like your menu system.

The only thing I think your game needs is less long range attacks. Make a Barrier spell or something to reflect attacks. Also some enemys.

I played the level I'm impressed. (Not that my impressions alter you : /)
Anyways the spell mechanics are suprisingly not that hard to learn. I thought I'd be confused all the time but not really.
Will the other levels have exploration? Because with all these spells you have perfect opportunity to make huge sprawling levels with items and stuff.

Played this today and really loved it.

The HUD is excellent and I especially enjoyed the light/effects from the spells and the icons you made for each school of magic.

Story is funny and lighthearted and you've pretty much nailed the beginning style of most rpg's with the instructions woven with story.

Can't wait for a full fledged level using all these new skills you've created! Great work

Yep, you did a brilliant job on this - I honestly expected not to like it, RPG vibes are generally not my cuppa, but the dialogue was snappy not sappy, and that is one slick interface you built. The spell animations were just great too and by the end of the level, the initially daunting control scheme felt pretty natural. Looking forward to the next installment!2011-05-18 23:17:00

Envious congrats!

Not saying you don't deserve it cause I totally agree and left review, ooo I was the 3rd review maybe I got a high review.

It's like that just having a really successful cool pages level. Tons of invites, hate mail, people who spam boo all the positive comments...

People are strange.

This is all totally normal, and it won't stop for a long time, except for number 5 which doesn't last long at all due to numbers 1-4 becoming rather intense and overwhelming. Just wait until people start questioning your sexuality and mental capacities, or wishing you dead because they hate you.

Anyways...I loved your level. Impressive stuff on a technical level, but also full of charm and character like any good RPG should be. Great fun too, more importantly. With this, I think you have truly raised the bar for RPG style gameplay in LBP2 and you might just have established yourself as the "next big thing" on the scene.

Just be careful not to go all "Charlie Sheen" with the newfound fame

I just dont understand the point of it. Does booing a good level make people feel better about themselves or something?

ANyway, I played Comphermic's Wizard level, its absolutely amazing but the one thing that stick out over everything else was the music. After hearing that masterful audial concoction it has become clear to me I need sequenced music in my upcoming levels. However, the sequencer is the one thing I was never good at. I cant even make ten second songs with it that sound good. So can anyone reccommend good musicians to get a hold of? I already sent one to Festerd_Jester, I used his music for Crimson Lance. He does lots of electronic and synth though, so I dont know how he would handle fantasy. Not to say you can't FJ! Just saying you might be a little out of your element.

Alsu ungreth, you dirty sniper:

Sounds like trolling. All I can say is COME AT BE BRO. You can't troll a troll, trolls trolling trolls trolling trolls trolling etc.

And why not? Charlie Sheen is awesome. ANd if you say otherwise, he'll get his army of invisible ninjas on you, snort some coke, and throw a baby giraffe out a window onto a giant trampoline.

My music was done by hilightnotes. It will be tough, I'd imagine, since he is probably getting all sorts of music requests!

I've produced original soundtracks for both my LBP2 levels. Check out the music from Stiff Pistons and Tenement, then let me know if you would like me to whip up a little something for you. In fact, I already have an unused one which might be suitable for your Wizard series. Just drop into my pod next time you see me online if you wanna listen.

I've played the first level and I absolutely love it! You have no idea how much I love medieval themed levels mixed with sorcery! Definitely a 5/5 for the mechanics alone. I especially liked the 8-bit theater reference. xD

I only have one small nitpick and a question for you.

The nitpick is; the environment can be a little bland at times. Is it possible to spice it up without interfering with the wizard's abilities and spells?

That wasn't my real question. This is; how did you manage to make the sackbot glow in the dark? I'm trying to create a similiar effect for my level which will be completely dark except for the sackbot who can toggle a light off and on.

Hearted and reviewed!

*EDIT*

I also noticed a few spelling errors in the dialogue, might wanna fix that. ;P
